The Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNE): translation and validation study of the Iranian version.

BACKGROUND: The Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNE) is a commonly used instrument to measure social anxiety. This study aimed to translate and to test the reliability and validity of the BFNE in Iran. METHODS: The English language version of the BFNE was translated into Persian (Iranian language) and was used in this study. The questionnaire was administered to a consecutive sample of 235 students with (n = 33, clinical group) and without social phobia (n = 202, non-clinical group). In addition to the BFNE, two standard instruments were used to measure social phobia severity: the S

Analysis of the Effect of Preoperative Eye Position Fixation Training in Patients With Pterygium: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study evaluated the effect of preoperative ocular fixation training on patients undergoing pterygium surgery. Before pterygium excision, patients were trained to perform eye position fixation training, which is beneficial for surgeons performing microsurgery. The study analysed the effectiveness of preoperative eye position fixation training in patients with pterygium by randomised controlled experimental design. The number of occurrences of self-turning, operation time, self-rating depression scale scores and self-rating anxiety scale scores of the experimental group (EG) were lower than

Moving beyond an exclusive focus on harm avoidance in obsessive-compulsive disorder: behavioral validation for the separability of harm avoidance and incompleteness.

There is increasing recognition that symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be associated not only with harm avoidance, but also with sensations of things being incomplete or not "just right." Although preliminary research supports the presence of both harm avoidance and incompleteness in OCD, their validity as separate constructs has not been tested beyond the use of self-report measures. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to behaviorally validate the separability of harm avoidance and incompleteness using an unselected student sample. Consistent with hypotheses, self-re

Anxiolytic effects of low dosage nitrous oxide-oxygen mixtures administered continuously in apprehensive subjects.

We observed the effect of low doses of nitrous oxide on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the cortisol output in blood and saliva, and the degree of sedation and analgesia of 20 volunteers. A psychologic screening inventory was also performed. We found nitrous oxide, at low dosage, to be primarily an anxiolytic and not an analgesic or amnesic agent. The nasally inhaled concentrations necessary to induce an anxiolytic effect varied from subject to subject, ranging from 30% to 65% and averaging 35% to 40%. This finding justifies the use of the gas to relieve anxiety instead of nonvolat

Effect of ethyl alcohol on lonic calcium and prolactin in man.

Earlier animal studies suggested that there might be physiologically significant changes in serum calcium following administration of ethyl alcohol. Ionized and total calcium were measured in five normal male subjects following the oral ingestion of 200cm3 of 50% ethyl alcohol. Although blood alcohols reached intoxication levels in all subjects, no significant change in ionized calcium or total calcium occurred. It is unlikely that alcohol contributes to the risks of hypocalcemia or hyperventilation and anxiety in individuals performing in adverse environments, although there is little questio

ASSESSMENT OF DISTRESS DYNAMICS AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF CANCER PATIENTS AT THE STAGE OF RADIATION THERAPY AND POSSIBILITIES OF THEIR CORRECTION.

UNLABELLED: Radiation therapy (RT) is the main type of antitumor treatment in inoperable patients. Low awareness and fear of the development of radiation reactions contributes to the destabilization of psycho-emotional state of patients, which can result in withdrawal from treatment and deterioration of their quality of life (QOL). Despite a steady increase in cancer rates in Ukraine, there are currently no studies to develop measures to improve psychological condition of patients undergoing treatment in radiation therapy departments. OBJECTIVE: to assess the dynamics of psycho-emotional stat

A video clip detailing the patient journey on the day of oocyte retrieval in addition to the standard of care: a randomized controlled trial.

STUDY QUESTION: Can a video clip detailing the patient journey decrease women's anxiety on the day of their first oocyte retrieval? SUMMARY ANSWER: The video clip does not affect women's anxiety on the day of their first oocyte retrieval. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: IVF triggers anxious reactions in women and men, with peaks of anxiety on the day of (especially the first) oocyte retrieval as shown by reliable questionnaires and biomarkers of distress. Several trials showed that videos with preparatory information reduce women's and men's anxiety for out-patient procedures. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DU

Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides alleviate cognitive impairment in sleep-deprived mice: Association with gut microbiota remodeling.

Sleep deprivation (SD) can impair cognitive function through multiple processes, including systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and synaptic dysfunction, yet effective interventions remain limited. Therefore, this study investigated whether Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLP) could alleviate SD-induced cognitive impairment and whether such effects were accompanied by changes in gut microbiota, fecal metabolism, and indicators related to the microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis. In a chronic SD mouse model, GLP administration not only improved memory performance and anxiety-like behaviors bu

AI-assisted history education in China: a secondary evidence map of psychological antecedents and learning outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on the use of artificial intelligence in Chinese history education remains fragmented. This study mapped the available secondary evidence and contextualized it with targeted corroboration of history-specific studies. METHODS: We analyzed a public bibliographic export of 1,063 records current to 1 April 2024 and conducted targeted full-text corroboration to identify history-education evidence beyond the original repository. After sequential screening, 30 records were retained for the contextual map. An expanded synonym audit was also performed to assess whether any direc

eIF4E-Dependent Translation Potentially Regulates Apoptosis and BDNF/TrkB Signaling in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex During Morphine-Induced CPP.

Morphine addiction is driven in part by persistent reward-associated memory, yet the molecular mechanisms linking translational control to cellular stress responses remain unclear. In the present study, using a mouse morphine-induced conditioned place preference and N2a cell model, we investigated apoptosis-related alterations in the medial prefrontal cortex and the involvement of eIF4E-dependent translational regulation and BDNF/TrkB signaling. Morphine-induced conditioned place preference was associated with an increase in TUNEL-positive cells in the medial prefrontal cortex, accompanied by

The impact of bio-psycho-social factors on mental health outcomes in patients with solid tumors.

INTRODUCTION: The old oncology approach, which considered the clinical and performance status as the most relevant diseases course and well-being indexes, has been recently replaced by a care system also focusing on a person's characteristics and needs. This study analyzed the role of physical symptoms, illness awareness, individual activities and social contexts on anxious/depressive symptoms and mental health in localized (LP) and advanced/metastatic (AMP) cancer patients. METHODS: Socio-demographic and medical information was gathered. The Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire, Hospital

Sphingolipids in Emotional Well-Being.

Emotional well-being is a multifactorial concept, which comprises not only life quality of human individuals, but also their mental and physical health. It encompasses several key parameters, many of which have behavioral representation in daily life. These include finding positive meaning of life events, ability to maintain supportive and caring social interactions, reward-oriented behavior, and many others. It is well-known that the behavioral phenotype is tightly bound to certain physiological and metabolic factors, among which sphingolipid (SL) balance of the organism and especially centra

Promoting mental health in nursing students during clinical training: a phenomenological analysis of a psychoeducational intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health issues among young people are increasingly concerning and affect nursing students. The academic environment is recognised as a source of stress, compounded by the demands of clinical settings during practical training. During clinical placements, students face emotionally challenging situations that may compromise their mental health and academic performance. It is the responsibility of nurse educators to implement strategies that help students develop the necessary skills for managing stress and anxiety, as well as effective coping and communication. A psychoeducat

Association between preoperative quality of life (QoL) and postoperative complications after gastrectomy for gastric carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Quality of life (QoL) assessments in surgical practice have traditionally focused on postoperative recovery and long-term outcomes. This study evaluated the predictive value of preoperative QoL for postoperative complications. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the prospectively collected data from 908 patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric carcinoma. Preoperative QoL was measured using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and STO22 questionnaires. A multivariate logistic regression was used to develop a predictive model, and model performance was assessed with a receiver operating characteri
