INTRODUCTION: Placental insufficiency is a leading cause of intrauterine growth restriction, contributing to perinatal morbidity and mortality. The molecular regulation of placental development and what causes placental insufficiency is poorly understood. Recently, a panel of genes were found to cause significant placental dysmorphologies in mice with severely growth restricted off-spring. We aimed to assess whether these genes were also implicated in human intrauterine growth restriction.
METHODS: We explored the expression of nine genes in primary cytotrophoblast cells in hypoxic (n = 6) an

BACKGROUND: Thrombosis of one of the umbilical arteries is a rare complication of pregnancy and is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including stillbirth and intrauterine growth restriction. Although extremely rare, umbilical artery thrombosis (UAT) in monochorionic diamniotic twins is difficult to diagnose prenatally and manage. UAT has a poor prognosis and is associated with an increased perinatal mortality rate. In most previous cases, emergency cesarean section was performed or intrauterine fetal death occurred at the time of UAT diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a…

Preeclampsia (PE) is a disease that is unique to pregnancy and affects multiple systems. It can lead to maternal and perinatal mortality. The precise etiology of PE is unclear. Patients with PE may have systemic or local immune abnormalities. A group of researchers has proposed that the immune communication between the fetus and mother is primarily moderated by natural killer (NK) cells as opposed to T cells, since NK cells are the most abundant immune cells in the uterus. This review examines the immunological roles of NK cells in the pathogenesis of PE. Our aim is to provide obstetricians wi…

Monoamniotic twins develop when a blastocyst spontaneously splits its progenitor cells, and each group of progenitor cells independently grows to become an individual. It is the rarest type of twin pregnancy and usually has significant developmental or congenital abnormalities, a higher rate of abortion, perinatal morbidity, and mortality. There is no information regarding monoamniotic twins in livestock species. Here, we reported a spontaneous abortion of monoamniotic twins in a dromedary camel at 278 days of gestation. Gonadorelin acetate (100 μg) was injected intramuscularly to induce ovula

Background Oligohydramnios and fetal growth restriction have been known for ages, with increased risk of disease and death during antenatal, neonatal, and adult life leading to operative interventions and perinatal mortality and morbidity. The amniotic fluid index varies with gestational age and is used to detect fetal well-being. Various oral and IV hydration and amino acid infusion therapies are studied to improve amniotic fluid index (AFI) and fetal weight. Objective To study the effect of intravenous amino acid infusion on AFI in pregnancies associated with oligohydramnios and fetal growth…

Understanding the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy on neonatal and maternal outcomes informs clinical decision-making. Here we report a national, population-based, matched cohort study to investigate associations between SARS-CoV-2 infection and, separately, COVID-19 vaccination just before or during pregnancy and the risk of adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes among women in Scotland with a singleton pregnancy ending at ≥20 weeks gestation. Neonatal outcomes are stillbirth, neonatal death, extended perinatal mortality, preterm birth (overall, spontaneous…

There is a high perinatal mortality rate in dogs, estimated at 20%, and one of the leading causes of this rate is hypoglycaemia. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a hypercaloric supplement containing vitamins and amino acids in newborn puppies presenting hypoglycaemia at birth. Ninety-nine pups were divided into four groups: normoglycaemic caesarean section (NORMOCS), hypoglycaemic caesarean section supplemented with the hypercaloric (SUPLCS), hypoglycaemic caesarean section supplemented with glucose (GLICCS) and eutocic delivery (EUT). We evaluated the following parameters glyca…

BACKGROUND: Pre-gestational diabetes can pose significant risk to the mother and infant, thus requiring careful counselling and management. Since Saint Vincent's declaration in 1989, adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, such as preeclampsia, perinatal mortality, congenital anomalies, and macrosomia, continue to be associated with type 1 diabetes. Although pregnancy is not considered an independent risk factor for the development of new onset microvascular complications, it is known to exacerbate pre-existing microvascular disease. Strict glycaemic control is the optimal management for pre-exis…

Preeclampsia is a multisystem hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that remains one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The widespread maternal endothelial dysfunction that underlies preeclampsia is thought to arise from excessive placental production of various factors combined with enhanced oxidative stress. While previous studies have reported elevated activin A in women diagnosed with preeclampsia, whether activin A can cause vascular dysfunction has not yet been thoroughly investigated. Here, we demonstrated that different subtypes of activin A

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE), a placenta-associated pregnancy complication, is the leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Met/Erk signaling is inhibited in the placentas of patients with early-onset preeclampsia (E-PE), but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, the expression modes of Met and endocytic vesicles in normal and preeclamptic placentas were compared. Biotinylation internalization/recycling assays were used to measure the endocytosis of Met under hypoxia and normoxia in HTR8/SVneo cells. In addition, the expression level of Cbl, a specif

BACKGROUND: Women with certain inflammatory diseases have an increased risk of giving birth to infants who are small for gestational age (SGA) or preterm birth (PTB), with maternal disease activity being the most important risk factor. However, previous studies investigating an association between psoriasis and SGA are scarce and have shown conflicting results.
AIM: To investigate the association between maternal psoriasis and risk of SGA infants and PTB, respectively, both overall and stratified by psoriasis severity.
METHODS: This was a nationwide register-based matched cohort study of wom

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Low-dose aspirin (LDA) is the most widely used drug to prevent PE, but the recommended dose of LDA varies according to different guidelines. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ is involved in the formation of the placenta during pregnancy and is expressed in women with severe PE. In the present study, Our purpose was to investigate whether aspirin intervention in preeclampsia was related to PPAR-γ.
METHODS: We administered pregnant mice with PPAR-γ-specific antagonist(…

INTRODUCTION: Multiple pregnancies are at higher risk of preterm birth. However, both children do not necessarily have to be born and exposed to the morbidity of prematurity. One option is a delayed-interval delivery with reduction of morbidity and mortality for the second twin. The present case series demonstrates the feasibility and safety of this procedure including the long-term outcome of the surviving children compared to the overall outcome of premature born children at the same perinatal center.
MATERIAL: Retrospective evaluation of all cases of delayed-interval deliveries in multiple

Preeclampsia, a multisystem pregnancy-specific hypertensive disorder, results in significant maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This condition is associated with placental histopathological abnormalities and particularly affects the decidual spiral arteries. Reportedly, aspirin prevents preeclampsia, specifically early-onset preeclampsia, although findings in decidual arteries in women treated with aspirin therapy remain unclear. We compared the clinical and histopathological placental findings between women with a history of preeclampsia, who did and did not receive low-dose aspi
