Alleviating Stress in Parkinson's Disease: Symptomatic Treatment, Disease Modification, or Both?

Psychological stress, a state of mental strain caused by mentally or physically threatening situations, plays a significant role in Parkinson's disease (PD). Motor symptoms worsen during acute stress and common non-motor symptoms in PD, such as anxiety and depression, are linked to chronic stress. Although evidence in humans is lacking, animal models of PD suggest that chronic stress can accelerate dopaminergic cell death. This suggests that stress-reducing interventions have not only symptomatic, but perhaps also disease-modifying effects. Our objective was to identify the most promising stra

Research progress on secondary formation, photosensitive reaction mechanism and human health effects of chromophoric brown carbon.

Brown carbon (BrC) has attracted widespread attention because of its strong absorption of solar radiation in the ultraviolet-visible wavelength range, which causes adverse impacts on human health. Originally, BrC was a physically defined class of substances. However, current research has gradually shifted towards the identification of its chemical groups, because its light-absorbing capability, chemical properties and health effects mainly depend on the chemical composition of its chromophores. Therefore, this review mainly focuses on the chemical understanding of BrC based on chromophores, an

Atrial fibrillation accelerates functional decline in older adults: a 15-year follow-up population-based study.

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been associated with functional impairment. However, the role exerted by AF on the long-term trajectories of functional mobility remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of AF on functional mobility by tracing walking speed (WS) trajectories over 15 years of follow-up in a population-based cohort of individuals aged 60+ years. METHODS AND RESULTS: This population-based cohort study included 3141 community-dwelling participants (mean age 73.7 years; 63.6% women) from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen, who wer

Calcified cystic lesion in cerebellum: A case report.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are benign, slow-growing congenital tumors of ectodermal origin. They are rare embryonal benign cystic masses with an incidence rate of approximately 0.04%-0.6% of intracranial tumors. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are fundamental diagnostic tools providing valuable information for surgical management. We reported a 59-year-old male patient with right limb weakness twelve hours prior to admission, slurred speech, and paresis of the facial nerve. Based on history taking, physical examination, and radiology examinations, we concluded

A multi-modal approach to investigate Desmodium gangeticum's influence on stress-induced male infertility: In vivo, in vitro, and in silico assessments.

Physical and psychological stress has an inverse relation with male libido and sperm quality. The present study investigates the potential fertility-enhancing properties of Desmodium gangeticum (DG) root extracts in male Wister rats subjected to immobilization-induced stress (SIMB). DG roots were extracted using n-hexane (HEDG), chloroform (CEDG), and water (AEDG). In the pilot study, aphrodisiac protentional was investigated at two doses (125 and 250 mg kg-1) of each extract. In the main study, the HEDG and AEDG at 125 and 250 mg kg-1 were challenged for the stress by immobilization (SIMB), f

Interventional Management of a Rare Case of Complex Congenital Heart Disease in an Adult Patient: A Case Report.

Congenital heart disease (CHD), which accounts for about one-third of all congenital defects and affects approximately 1% of all live births worldwide, has maintained a stable incidence rate while experiencing a decrease in mortality rates since 1990. Despite advancements in fetal cardiac ultrasound examinations and routine pulse oximetry screening of newborns, a significant proportion of CHD patients may still be undiagnosed until adulthood. This oversight can lead to considerable morbidity and mortality due to physical limitations and reduced quality of life. In this case report, we describe

Mechanical induction of osteoanabolic Wnt1 promotes osteoblast differentiation via Plat.

Physical activity-induced mechanical stimuli play a crucial role in preserving bone mass and structure by promoting bone formation. While the Wnt pathway is pivotal for mediating the osteoblast response to loading, the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we found that mechanical stimulation induces osteoblastic Wnt1 expression, resulting in an upregulation of key osteogenic marker genes, including Runx2 and Sp7, while Wnt1 knockdown using siRNA prevented these effects. RNAseq analysis identified Plat as a major target through which Wnt1 exerts its osteogenic influence. This was co

Computational Analysis of Tumor Treating Fields for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in Full Thoracic Models.

PURPOSE: Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) are alternating electric fields at 150 to 200 kHz that exert their anticancer effect by destroying tumor cells when they undergo mitosis. TTFields are currently being tested in patients with non-small cell lung cancer with advanced disease (NCT02973789) and those with brain metastasis (NCT02831959). However, the distribution of these fields within the thoracic compartment remains poorly understood. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Using positron emission tomography-computed tomography image data sets obtained from a series of 4 patients with poorly differentiat

An analytical model describing the mechanics of erythrocyte membrane wrapping during active invasion of a plasmodium falciparum merozoite.

The invasion of a merozoite into an erythrocyte by membrane wrapping is a hallmark of malaria pathogenesis. The invasion involves biomechanical interactions whereby the merozoite exerts actomyosin-based forces to push itself into and through the erythrocyte membrane while concurrently inducing biochemical damage to the erythrocyte membrane. Whereas the biochemical damage process has been investigated, the detailed mechanistic understanding of the invasion mechanics remains limited. Thus, the current study aimed to develop a mathematical model describing the mechanical factors involved in the m

A Case of Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease and Anomalous Origin of the Right Coronary Artery With a Malignant Course Presenting With Non-exertional Chest Discomfort and Brugada Phenocopy.

Coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) are an uncommon cause of chest pain in the younger population. Misdiagnosis can be detrimental and lead to sudden cardiac deaths. We present a 62-year-old male with a past medical history significant for chest pain history with a workup in 2001 presumed to be non-cardiac in origin from bronchial asthma. He presented from a Micronesian Island for the evaluation of non-exertional chest discomfort. Further workup showed a Brugada type I pattern on ECG and ST wave depressions on anterolateral and inferior leads with associated AVR elevation on exercise stress testi

A Traditional Chinese Medicine for the Treatment of Endometrial Hyperplasia via Regulating the HPO Axis in Rats.

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, accompanied by endometrial hyperplasia (EH), is a common gynecological disease that seriously affects female physical and mental health. Some drugs have been prompted to cure the disease, but most medications have certain side effects and limitations. In the present study, we demonstrated an unexploited Chinese traditional medicine, a combination of Saururus chinensis, Celosia cristata, and Spatholobus suberectus (SCS), which could be used for the treatment of EH and associated complications in rats. We identified the active components from the three Chinese her

Adherent Bacteria and Parasiticidal Secretion Products of Human Cervicovaginal Microbiota-Associated Lactobacillus gasseri Confer Non-Identical Cell Protection against Trichomonas vaginalis-Induced Cell Detachment.

Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite specific to the human genital tract, is one of the most common sexually transmitted pathogens. Its pathogenicity is strongly associated with its expression of a broad array of proteases triggering cytotoxic effects in host epithelial cells. Vaginal microbiota-associated Lactobacillus, including those of L. gasseri in particular, can counteract T. vaginalis pathogenesis, but the mechanisms involved have yet to be clarified. T. vaginalis strain G3 (Tv G3) cytotoxicity was assessed by examining cell morphology, cell detachment, and fluorescent labeling

TRIP13/FLNA Complex Promotes Tumor Progression and Is Associated with Unfavorable Outcomes in Melanoma.

Cutaneous melanoma is a high-grade malignant tumor originating from skin melanocytes with high risk of recurrence and metastasis. Further study on the mechanism of melanoma development is urgently needed. Here, we performed a bioinformatic analysis to identify critical genes in melanoma using public datasets in the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Among these differentially expressed genes, thyroid hormone receptor interactor 13 (TRIP13) has been reported to exert an important role in the development of various tumors, while its role in melanoma remains unclear. We selected TRIP13 as a candid

Lipid Microcapsules Promoted Neural Stem Cell Survival in the Infarcted Area of Mice with Ischemic Stroke by Inducing Autophagy.

Intracerebral transplantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) for ischemic stroke treatment has been demonstrated to be inefficient, with only <5% of delivered cells being retained. Microcapsules may be a good carrier for NSC delivery; however, the current microcapsules do not fully meet the demands for cell survival after transplantation. In the present study, we designed a strategy for the encapsulation of NSCs in a novel lipid-alginate (L-A) microcapsule based on a two-step method. The protective effect of a L-A microcapsule on oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) was investigated by using the C
