BACKGROUND: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is associated with improvement or resolution of several HIV-associated opportunistic infections. Although prophylaxis against disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection may be successfully discontinued after a favorable response to HAART, the 1999 guidelines from the U.S. Public Health Service/Infectious Diseases Society of America recommend continuing therapy for disseminated M. avium complex infection, regardless of the response to HAART.

Red cells (RBCs) from sickle cell disease patients may exhibit oxidative changes of RBC membranes due to the instability of hemoglobin (Hb) S. BACKGROUND: An 8-month-old recipient of a liver segment transplant had anti-D detected for the first time in her Day 5 posttransplant plasma and anti-C detected for the first time in her Day 55 posttransplant plasma. The donor's plasma contained anti-C and anti-D. Clinical and laboratory findings established a diagnosis of passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS). Hemolysis did not occur, because the recipient's blood group phenotype was, by chance, D- C-.

This study explored the utility of CD38 immunodetection in paraffin-embedded tissue sections for differentiating follicular lymphoma (FL) from reactive follicular hyperplasia (RFH) by examining RFH (n = 47) and FL (n = 178). Here we describe two cases of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma with monoclonal immunoglobulins (Igs). The first case was a 77-year-old man with primary lymphoma of the lung. Exosomes play an important role in cell-to-cell communication as they can transfer functional molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) from one cell to another, exerting biological and immunological functions.
