OBJECTIVE: To review and discuss the use of hydroxyethyl starches (HES) in equine veterinary medicine, and to provide recommendations for its use.
DATA SOURCES: Veterinary and human peer-reviewed medical literature including scientific reviews, meta-analyses, and original research articles.
HUMAN DATA SYNTHESIS: Increasing evidences on adverse effects after HES use and decreasing support for beneficial effects with regards to volume expansion and colloid osmotic pressure (COP) support in critically ill subjects have led to a recent guideline to limit the use of HES in critically ill people.

PURPOSE: Soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) is a decoy receptor which sequesters RAGE ligands and acts as a cytoprotective agent. To date, it is unclear whether the lower sRAGE levels observed in obesity are a marker of increased overall adiposity or reflect increases in particular fat depots. Therefore, we evaluated in healthy women the relationship among sRAGE and indicators of adiposity, including abdominal visceral (VAT) and epicardial visceral (EAT) adipose tissues, to explore the potential role of sRAGE as an earlier biomarker of cardiometabolic risk.

BACKGROUND: Due to the threat of serious or fatal bleedings, fetuses with neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAIT) may need intrauterine platelet (PLT) transfusions. To prevent a volume overload or an ABO minor mismatch, standard PLT concentrates need to be washed to increase the PLT concentration and to reduce the plasma content. Hyperconcentrated single-donor PLT concentrates (HCPs) are a therapeutic alternative. Surfactant indices and inhibitors were measured in lung lavage fluid from 8 infants with meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) who were receiving mechanical ventilation and 11 healthy control subjects. Surfactant phospholipid and surfactant protein A content in MAS was not different from that of control subjects, but concentrations of total protein, albumin, and membrane-derived phospholipid were elevated. All infants with MAS had hemorrhagic pulmonary edema. These findings reinforce the notion of MAS as a toxic pneumonitis with epithelial disruption and proteinaceous exudation.
