Children who are HIV-exposed but without HIV (HEU) face increased health risks compared with children without HIV exposure, including risk of higher preterm delivery, infectious morbidities, mortality, immune dysfunction, poorer growth, and neurodevelopmental delays. Underlying mechanisms are not fully understood but likely involve multiple intersecting factors, including HIV-induced parental inflammation, altered immune function, in utero antiretroviral therapy exposure, suboptimal breast/chestfeeding, and socioeconomic disparities. Although some differences appear transient, others may persi

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a common cause of significant neonatal morbidity and mortality. The stronghold of the treatment for moderate-to-severe HIE is therapeutic hypothermia (TH) which provides a neuroprotective effect. However, it also is associated with pain and stress. Moreover, neonates with HIE are subjected to a significant number of painful procedures. Untreated pain during the early neonatal period may entail future challenges such as impaired brain growth and development as well as impaired pain sensitivity later in life. Hereby, the provision of adequate sedation and

New-onset lupus nephritis (LN) poses a diagnostic and management challenge during pregnancy. This is more pertinent in the indigenous population, where the prevalence is higher, and the clinical phenotype tends to be more severe. We report the case of a 30-year-old G3P2 indigenous female, living in remote Queensland, with a late presentation of nephrotic syndrome at 30 weeks gestation. A clinical diagnosis of Class V LN was made without a kidney biopsy due to maternal and foetal risk, and she was empirically treated with steroids and disease-modifying agents to good effect. She remained normot

Coats plus syndrome (CPS) is an exceedingly rare genetic disorder associated with premature telomere shortening. The syndrome, also known as cerebroretinal microangiopathy with calcifications and cysts, has a multisystemic manifestation. It may present as brain abnormalities, seizures, osteopenia, prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, and portal hypertension, among others. Up to 40% of affected individuals manifest recurrent gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding which can be life-threatening in some cases. Treatment for GI bleeding is not standardized and is therefore individualized based on the

Climate change has significant consequences for children's respiratory health. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events increase children's exposure to allergens, mould, and air pollutants. Children are particularly vulnerable to these airborne particles due to their higher ventilation per unit of body weight, more frequent mouth breathing, and outdoor activities. Children with asthma and cystic fibrosis are at particularly high risk, with increased risks of exacerbation, but the effects of climate change could also be observed in the general population, with a risk of impaired lung deve

The children hypertension is a serious threat to population health because uncontrolled children hypertension can result in exponential increasing of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, progression of kidney failure and premature death in adulthood. The main risk factors for primary children and adolescent hypertension are considered as cardiovascular biomarkers (fibro-blast growth), obesity, especially central obesity, overweight, low birth weight, high sodium intake, sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, socioeconomic and ethnic factors, as well as family anamnesis. BACKGROUND: The incidence of neurological disorders is increasing due to population growth and extended life expectancy. Despite advances in the understanding of these disorders, curative strategies for treatment have not yet eventuated. In part, this is due to the complexities of the disorders and a lack of identification of their specific underlying pathologies. Dictyostelium discoideum has provided a useful, simple model to aid in unraveling the complex pathological characteristics of neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, neuronal c…

Osteosarcoma is a tumour that can originate in any bone and is the most frequent malignant tumour of the skeleton. It typically develops close to the metaphyseal growth plates in the limbs' long bones. The three most prevalent places are the femur, tibia, and humerus. Additional locations include the pelvis, skull, and jaw. Diaphyseal osteosarcoma involves a smaller population and is highly uncommon. Conventional kinds of osteosarcoma, such as osteoblastic, chondroblastic, and fibroblastic types, as well as telangiectatic, multifocal, parosteal, and periosteal types, are some of the variations

Over the last few decades, China has witnessed a great leap in economic growth and social welfare. Unfortunately, Chinese people have also been affected by a pandemic of over-nutrition, lack of physical activity, and increasing prevalence of metabolic disorders including obesity, diabetes, non-alcohol fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. For instance, China currently has the largest number of diabetic patients (∼116 million) in the world. The fire of metabolic disorders is further fanned by the increased aging population, according to the survey results from the National Bureau of

The United Nations identified decent work and economic growth as a sustainable development goal for 2030. Decent work is a term that sums up aspirations for people in their working lives. One of the factors that influences the achievement of decent work is aging. This article examines how aspects of aging and organizational factors affect work ability across the lifespan and throughout one's work career. Additionally, the critical issue of worker physical mobility was also addressed as a practical limitation to functional aging. Through our investigation, we identified gaps in the literature w

Contemporary clinical practice heavily relies on interpretation of population-based birth weight standards to evaluate neonatal nutrition status. Obstetricians have adopted the use of estimated fetal weight in a similar manner to estimate fetal nutritional status. However, most fetal weight prediction models overemphasize skeletal parameters such as biparietal diameter, head circumference, and femur diaphysis length. Although most EFW calculations also include abdominal circumference, this 2D growth parameter is largely defined by liver size and a small rim of subcutaneous fat. Advances in 3D

Malignant meningiomas are WHO Grade III meningiomas representing 1% of all meningiomas. They are comprised of three histologic types: anaplastic, rhabdoid, and papillary. They can arise de novo or as a result of biologic progression of meningiomas of lower histologic grades. The overall survival of patients with WHO grade III meningiomas is 2-3 years. Surgery is the main treatment, while radiotherapy is thought to slow tumor growth. Multiple trials have been attempted on chemotherapeutic agents, hormonal therapies, small molecule and anti-angiogenic agents without robust evidence of efficacy.

With the anticipated population growth in the coming decades, the changing regulatory environment, and the continued emergence of resistance to commercial pesticides, there is a constant need to discover new lead chemistries with novel modes of action. We have established a portfolio of approaches to accelerate lead generation. One of these approaches capitalizes on the rich bioactivity of natural products (NPs), highlighted by the numerous examples of NP-based crop protection compounds. Within Corteva Agriscience and the affiliated preceding companies, NPs have been a fruitful approach, for n…

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG) is a rare B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder driven by Esptein-Barr virus (EBV) that most commonly affects the lungs, although extra pulmonary sites like the central nervous system, skin, liver and kidney can also be involved. It is microscopically characterized by an angiocentric and angiodestructive growth pattern, predominantly composed by small T-cells, although a smaller population of atypical large B-cells is considered the true neoplastic component. Oral cavity involvement of LYG has rarely been described and the diagnosis of this neoplasm is very diff

BACKGROUND: Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) is a severe ocular disorder that presents early in life. Cytochrome P4501B1 (CYP1B1) and latent transforming growth factor-beta-binding protein 2 (LTBP2) are the most commonly mutated genes in PCG.
AIM: To investigate the causative genetic mutations in eight Indian families with PCG.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was applied to analyze the genomic DNA samples from PCG probands. Sanger sequencing was utilized to confirm the identified mutations.
RESULTS: We identified four homozygous missense mutations (c.1405C>T, p.R469W; c.1397G

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is new in the DSM-5, replacing the DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of Feeding Disorder of Infancy or Early Childhood. ARFID has no age criterion, and therefore addresses eating disturbances across the lifespan. This report illustrates the case of an 11-year-old boy of Colombian ancestry with ARFID and explores the role of culture in the diagnosis of ARFID. To date, literature describing this disorder is limited. ARFID is often seen in the child and adolescent population and can have significant medical consequences, including weight loss, hemodynamic insta

As population growth continues to outpace development of water infrastructure in many countries, desalination (the removal of salts from seawater) at high energy efficiency will likely become a vital source of fresh water. Due to its atomic thinness combined with its mechanical strength, porous graphene may be particularly well-suited for electrodialysis desalination, in which ions are removed under an electric field via ion-selective pores. Here, we show that single graphene nanopores preferentially permit the passage of K(+) cations over Cl(-) anions with selectivity ratios of over 100 and c…

Treatment-related obesity and the metabolic syndrome in adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Both conditions often begin during therapy. Preventive measures, including dietary counseling and tailored exercise, should be initiated early in the course of survivorship, with referral to specialists to optimize success. However, among adults who develop obesity or the metabolic syndrome and who do not respond to lifestyle therapy, medical intervention may be indicated to manage underlying pathology, such as growth hormone defic

Gynecomastia is defined as excess glandular growth of breast tissue in males. It is a noticeable physical difference that commonly affects males in adolescence and old age. While often transient in nature, gynecomastia persists indefinitely in 10% of cases. Much of the literature on gynecomastia has focused on etiology and management. Little research has been done regarding the impact of gynecomastia on one's mental health and quality of life; however, some studies have suggested various psychosocial and psychological consequences related to gynecomastia. These consequences include but are not
