OBJECTIVE: Late-preterm (LPT) neonates account for over 70% of all preterm births in the US. Approximately 60% of LPT births are the result of non-spontaneous deliveries. The optimal timing of delivery for many obstetric conditions at LPT gestations is unclear, likely resulting in obstetric practice variation. The purpose of this study is to identify variation in the obstetrical management of LPT pregnancies.

OBJECTIVES: Antibiotics are frequently administered in acute cholecystitis for preoperative prophylaxis or postoperative treatment. The optimal timing, choice, and duration of antibiotics are unclear.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all cases of acute cholecystitis between 1996 and 2001 at the American University of Beirut Medical Centre. A survey among general surgeons was also performed to describe the pattern of antibiotic prescribing in uncomplicated acute cholecystitis. We report data from an observational study, conducted in France during a 1-year period, of 9038 patients who presented with acute herpes zoster (n = 8103) or postherpetic neuralgia (PHN; n = 935) at the office practices of 4635 general practitioners or dermatologists. Physical abuse of the elderly is a frequent occurrence within the older population. For many reasons, including lack of recognition for the entity in the medical literature, physical abuse of the elderly is difficult to recognize. The injuries of physical abuse may be nondescript, but patterned injuries, injuries in unusual anatomic locations and injuries in various stages of healing should alert the practicing physician to the possibility of physical abuse of the elderly.
