Supplementation with stigma maydis polysaccharide attenuates autism-like behaviors and improves gut function in valproic acid-induced autism model male rats.

Stigma maydis polysaccharide (SMPS) has regulatory effect on the intestinal microflora and promotes gastrointestinal peristalsis. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience gastrointestinal problems and dysbiosis in their gut microbiota. Our previous study revealed that SMPS interventions had an impact on the gut microbiota of valproic acid (VPA)-induced autism model rats. However, the effects of SMPS on the behavior and gut function of autism model rats remain poorly understood. Therefore, we gave different doses of SMPS intervention in the early stage of autism model rats

Pubertal timing and adolescent outcomes: investigating explanations for associations with a genetically informed design.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathology and risky behaviors increase during adolescence, and understanding which adolescents are most at risk informs prevention and intervention efforts. Pubertal timing relative to same-sex, same-age peers is a known correlate of adolescent outcomes among both boys and girls. However, it remains unclear whether this relation is better explained by a plausible causal process or unobserved familial liability. METHODS: We extended previous research by examining associations between pubertal timing in early adolescence (age 14) and outcomes in later adolescence (age 17) in a

What We Know About Intracranial Hypertension in Children With Syndromic Craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: A scoping review of literature about mechanisms leading to intracranial hypertension (ICH) in syndromic craniosynostosis (sCS) patients, followed by a narrative synopsis of whether cognitive and behavioral outcome in sCS is more related to genetic origins, rather than the result of ICH. METHODS: The scoping review comprised of a search of keywords in EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of science, Cochrane Central Register of Trials, and Google scholar databases. Abstracts were read and clinical articles were selected for full-text review and data were extracted using a structured template. A pri

Forcing an Effortless Stance: The Lived Body in Social Anxiety Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The fear of scrutiny central in social anxiety disorder (SAD) points to a problem of the interpersonally perceivable body. Whereas the predominant cognitive-behavioral (CBT) account of the disorder understands this as a problem of excessive self-focused attention, the phenomenological literature reveals it as a sign of a fundamental transformation of body experience. The lived body absent from experience becomes the object body at the forefront of it. The present paper contributes to this literature by refining and grounding these notions in first-person descriptions of concrete

Multidisciplinary Investigations of Sustained Malaria Transmission in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

In the course of malaria elimination in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), malaria epidemiology has experienced drastic spatiotemporal changes with residual transmission concentrated along international borders and the rising predominance of Plasmodium vivax. The emergence of Plasmodium falciparum parasites resistant to artemisinin and partner drugs renders artemisinin-based combination therapies less effective while the potential spread of multidrug-resistant parasites elicits concern. Vector behavioral changes and insecticide resistance have reduced the effectiveness of core vector control

Brief Research Report: How Do Claw Disorders Affect Activity, Body Weight, and Milk Yield of Multiparous Holstein Dairy Cows?

Claw disorders are among the most relevant health problems in dairy herds. Despite being often not clearly visible and not easily detectable for farmers, they may appear as peculiar cow behavioral and performance patterns. This retrospective study aimed to assess cow's behavior and production variations associated with claw disorders. The study involved 54 lactating Italian Holstein cows reared on the same dairy farm. A veterinarian performed the routine hoof trimming every 6 months, diagnosing specific claw disorders. Multiparous cows with no disorders at the first trimming were selected and

Adversity in early childhood: Long-term effects on early academic skills.

BACKGROUND: The dimensional adversity model (McLaughlin & Sheridan, 2016) proposes that deprivation and threat affect child development differently. However, empirical support for the dimensional adversity model stems predominately from adolescent samples. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine if deprivation and threat experiences in infancy have differential effects on pre-academic skills in early childhood. Furthermore, we addressed the effect of chronic vs. temporary adversity exposure in infancy. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The population-based sample consisted of 3481 infants (49% girls). New-bo

All's well that ends well? Long-term course of a patient with anti-amphiphysin associated limbic encephalitis.

Anti-amphiphysin associated limbic encephalitis (LE) is a paraneoplastic autoimmune disorder. The initial clinical presentation features seizures, cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. We present the case of a 25-year-old female patient hospitalized after four consecutive tonic-clonic seizures, followed by confusion, psychotic symptoms, nonconvulsive seizure series, and severe global amnesia. Diagnostic workup revealed anti-amphiphysin associated LE without a tumor. MRI and PET indicated inflammatory processes affecting the bilateral mesial temporal structures more pronounced on the left si

Comparison of Individuals With and Without the Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Terms of Substance Use Features and Psychological Problems According to Their Substance Preferences.

OBJECTIVE: There are multiple studies that show that exposure to a traumatic life event is a significant factor in the development and continuation of addiction. When post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is added to an alcohol-substance use disorder, the course of treatment is negatively affected. This study aimed to compare people with and without the risk of PTSD in terms of substance use features and psychological problems on the basis of their substance preferences. METHODS: The study was conducted with 614 individuals hospitalized in an addiction recovery center because of an alcohol an

A biomechanical paradox in fish: swimming and suction feeding produce orthogonal strain gradients in the axial musculature.

The axial musculature of fishes has historically been characterized as the powerhouse for explosive swimming behaviors. However, recent studies show that some fish also use their 'swimming' muscles to generate over 90% of the power for suction feeding. Can the axial musculature achieve high power output for these two mechanically distinct behaviors? Muscle power output is enhanced when all of the fibers within a muscle shorten at optimal velocity. Yet, axial locomotion produces a mediolateral gradient of muscle strain that should force some fibers to shorten too slowly and others too fast. Thi

"Gambling Can't Be Positive, Can it?": Gambling Beliefs and Behaviors Among Older Korean Immigrants.

After migrating to the United States, older Korean immigrants may increase their gambling participation and be at higher risk for problem gambling. However, not much is known about their experiences and beliefs on gambling. The purpose of the present study was to explore gambling behaviors and shared beliefs about gambling among older Korean immigrants residing in New York City. A total of 20 semi-structured in-depth interviews (10 men and 10 women) were conducted in Korean. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The findings revealed three major

Emotional dysregulation features and problem gambling in university students: a pilot study.

Undergraduate students typically cope with various changes in their lives and experience many stressors associated with academic issues. Distress can make them more vulnerable to particular behavioral patterns in order to cope with negative affect. The association of problematic gambling with particular emotion regulation characteristics-some of which are developmentally dependent-becomes a recent focus of research with clinical and preventive implications. We carried out a pilot study enrolling voluntarily young adults of a public university in the Lisbon area, and 117 Portuguese-speaking ind

Bidirectional Associations between Youth Adjustment and Mothers' and Fathers' Coparenting Conflict.

Research demonstrates significant associations between coparenting conflict and child adjustment problems. However, the implications of youth adjustment for coparenting, especially during youth's adolescence, remain poorly understood. Addressing several gaps in the literature, this study examines the longitudinal trajectory of mothers' and fathers' reported coparenting conflict from youth ages 10-17 and tests bidirectional associations between youth social anxiety, hostility, risk-taking behaviors, and mothers' and fathers' coparenting conflict. Participants include 757 mothers, fathers, and y
