The aim of this study was to compare the results of high selective vagotomy and simple suture in the treatment of perforated duodenal ulcer. Among 150 patients admitted in our institute from 1978 to 1990, 96 were treated with simple suture while 54 underwent high-selective vagotomy (42 with pyloroplasty). Phenol red dye spraying endoscopy, in addition to a biopsy study, was employed for the determination of Helicobacter pylori distribution on the gastric mucosa of 108 patients with no gross gastric findings. Four pathologists independently examined 82 antral mucosal biopsy specimens for the presence of Helicobacter pylori and indicated whether their assessments were certain. The immunohistochemical expression of pepsinogen I (PI) and pepsinogen II (PII) was studied in 103 gallbladder carcinomas, 25 non tumoral gallbladder lesions and 23 gallbladder cancer metastases. The operative management and clinical course of 17 patients treated for severe pancreatico-duodenal injuries from 1983 to 1990 was reviewed. The etiology of these injuries was gunshot wound in 15 patients; stab wound in 1 patient; and a motor vehicle accident in 1 patient. During an 18 year period, 352 infants and children under 18 years of age underwent surgical treatment for symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux. We have measured, by an intubation method, gastric evacuation and gastrointestinal absorption of alcohol ingested with a meal in seven healthy nonalcoholic subjects. A homogenized meal containing [14C]PEG and ethanol (1 g/kg body wt) was given intragastrically while saline containing [57CO]vitamin B12 was perfused into the duodenum. Prepyloric (PPU), pyloric (PU), and duodenal bulb ulcers (DU) are traditionally incorporated in the clinical entity 'duodenal ulcer disease'. The study concerned the effects of PGE1 and PGF2 alpha on the spontaneous tone and the responses to field stimulation of isolated strips from: lower esophageal sphincter (LES), pyloric sphincter (PS) and ileocaecal sphincter (ICS) of cats.
