Assessment of quality control and effect of radiolysis on the in vivo biodistribution of [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-I&T.

BACKGROUND: One of the challenges in optimizing PSMA-based therapies for the treatment of prostate cancer is the stability of the radiopharmaceutical, defined by the degradation of radiolabeled compounds due to exposure to ionizing radiation (radiolysis). Radiolysis of a radiopharmaceutical is difficult to measure and can influence the biodistrubion of radiopharmaceuticals in vivo, possibly leading to toxicity or suboptimal outcomes. Therefore, an inter-laboratory study was performed to confirm accurate detection of radiolysed [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-I&T, and the biodistribution of radiolysed radiophar

Analysis of potential risk factors for the development of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is an undesirable consequence of the action of drugs, involving the exposure of bones in a patient not exposed to ionizing radiation in the head and neck area. The occurrence of MRONJ is associated with therapy with anti-resorptive drugs (bisphosphonates), receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) drugs, e.g., denosumab, and anti-angiogenic drugs that are vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to identify risk factors for the development of MRONJ. MATE

Biologically Effective Dose and Dose Rate in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is used in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) to deliver precise, focused ionizing radiation to the trigeminal nerve, thereby reducing its ability to transmit pain signals. Understanding the impact of unique radiobiological parameters, such as the biologically effective dose (BED) and dose rate, in GKRS is essential to optimize treatment protocols and ensure predictable therapeutic outcomes. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate how BED and dose rate impact GKRS effectiveness and toxicity. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We sear

Generation and applications of synthetic computed tomography images for neurosurgical planning.

OBJECTIVE: CT and MRI are synergistic in the information provided for neurosurgical planning. While obtaining both types of images lends unique data from each, doing so adds to cost and exposes patients to additional ionizing radiation after MRI has been performed. Cross-modal synthesis of high-resolution CT images from MRI sequences offers an appealing solution. The authors therefore sought to develop a deep learning conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) which performs this synthesis. METHODS: Preoperative paired CT and contrast-enhanced MR images were collected for patients with

Study of genotoxic and cytotoxic effects induced in human fibroblasts by exposure to pulsed and continuous 1.6 GHz radiofrequency.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of radiofrequency (RF) sources, ranging from household appliances to telecommunications devices and military equipment, raises concerns among people and regulatory agencies about the potential health risks of RF exposure. Consequently, several in vitro and in vivo studies have been done to investigate the biological effects, in particular non-thermal, of this non-ionizing radiation. To date, this issue is still being debated due to the controversial results that have been reported. Furthermore, the impact of different RF signal modulations on biological systems r

A REVIEW OF ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PNEUMATIC ENEMA IN THE REDUCTION OF INTUSSUSCEPTION IN CHILDREN: INSIGHTS FROM A TEACHING HOSPITAL IN NIGERIA.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatic reduction, as a non-operative mode of treating intussusception, is traditionally done under fluoroscopy guidance. However, fluoroscopy guidance is fraught with exposure to ionizing radiation and fluoroscopy machines may not be routinely available especially in low-and-middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, safety and predictive factors of successful reduction of intussusception using the ultrasound-guided pneumatic technique. MATERIALS & METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of children, 3 to 36 months of age, who were confirm

Incidence of Maxillary Sinus Disorders in Dental Patients Undergoing Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was quickly adopted in dentistry settings due to its compact size, low cost, and minimal ionizing radiation dose when compared to medical computed tomography. CBCT generates three-dimensional (3D) images that are useful in a variety of oral and maxillofacial circumstances, including diagnosis and assessment of disease severity, treatment planning and delivery, and follow-up. A significant advantage of CBCT lies in its capability to recognize incidental findings. In the realm of dental CBCT imaging, incidental findings often involve the maxillary

Chemotherapy and cryopreservation affects DNA repair foci in lymphocytes of breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Although breast cancer (BC) patients benefit from radiotherapy (RT), some radiosensitive (RS) patients suffer from side effects caused by ionizing radiation in healthy tissues. It is thought that RS is underlaid by a deficiency in the repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSB). DNA repair proteins such as p53-binding protein 1 (53BP1) and phosphorylated histone H2AX (γH2AX), form DNA repair foci at the DSB locations and thus serve as DSB biomarkers. Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) are commonly believed to be an appropriate cell system for RS assessment using DNA repair foci. The amou

Assessment of Micronuclei Frequency in the Peripheral Blood of Adult and Pediatric Patients Receiving Fractionated Total Body Irradiation.

The cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay is an established method for assessing chromosome damage in human peripheral blood lymphocytes resulting from exposure to genotoxic agents such as ionizing radiation. The objective of this study was to measure cytogenetic DNA damage and hematology parameters in vivo based on MN frequency in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from adult and pediatric leukemia patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation preceded by total body irradiation (TBI) as part of the conditioning regimen. CBMN assay cultures were prepared from fresh blood s

State of the Art Imaging of Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a common disease, particularly prevalent in geriatric populations, which causes significant worldwide morbidity due to increased bone fragility and fracture risk. Currently, the gold-standard modality for diagnosis and evaluation of osteoporosis progression and treatment relies on dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which measures bone mineral density (BMD) and calculates a score based upon standard deviation of measured BMD from the mean. However, other imaging modalities can also be used to evaluate osteoporosis. Here, we review historical as well as current research into

Congenital lung abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging: the CLAM study.

OBJECTIVES: Follow-up of congenital lung abnormalities (CLA) is currently done with chest computer tomography (CT). Major disadvantages of CT are exposure to ionizing radiation and need for contrast enhancement to visualise vascularisation. Chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be a safe alternative to image CLA without using contrast agents. The objective of this cohort study was to develop a non-contrast MRI protocol for the follow-up of paediatric CLA patients, and to compare findings on MRI to postnatal CT in school age CLA patients. METHODS: Twenty-one CLA patients, 4 after surgic

Texture transformer super-resolution for low-dose computed tomography.

Computed tomography (CT) is widely used to diagnose many diseases. Low-dose CT has been actively pursued to lower the ionizing radiation risk. A relatively smoother kernel is typically used in low-dose CT to suppress image noise, which may sacrifice spatial resolution. In this work, we propose a texture transformer network to simultaneously reduce image noise and improve spatial resolution in CT images. This network, referred to as Texture Transformer for Super Resolution (TTSR), is a reference-based deep-learning image super-resolution method built upon a generative adversarial network (GAN).

The value of diffusion-weighted and dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging in the diagnosis of thymic epithelial tumors.

Background: Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are clinically the most frequently encountered neoplasm of the prevascular mediastinum in adults. The role of chest magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been increasingly stressed thanks to its excellent contrast resolution, freedom from ionizing radiation, and capability to provide additional information regarding tumors' cellular structure and vascularity. Methods: This study aimed to establish the relationship between the MR findings and pathological classification of TETs, focusing on diffusion-weighted (DW) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) ima

Georeferencing of Personal Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields from Wi-Fi in a University Area.

In the last two decades, due to the development of the information society, the massive increase in the use of information technologies, including the connection and communication of multiple electronic devices, highlighting Wi-Fi networks, as well as the emerging technological advances of 4G and 5G (new-generation mobile phones that will use 5G), have caused a significant increase in the personal exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF), and as a consequence, increasing discussions about the possible adverse health effects. The main objective of this study was to measure the

Additional CTA-Subtraction Technique in Detection of Pulmonary Embolism-a Benefit for Patients or Only an Increase in Dose?

Latest advantages in computed tomography (CT) come with enhanced diagnostic imaging and also sophisticated dose reduction techniques. However, overall exposure to ionizing radiation of patients in Germany rises slightly, which is mainly based on the growing number of performed CT scans. Furthermore, new possibilities in modern imaging, including 4D scans or perfusion protocols, offer new medical insights but require additional scans. In this study, we reevaluated data sets from patients undergoing CT examinations because of suspected pulmonary embolism and compared doses and diagnostic results

Spatiotemporal association of low birth weight with Cs-137 deposition at the prefecture level in Japan after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents: an analytical-ecologic epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mortality increased in contaminated prefectures after the Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accidents in Japan in 2011. Elevated counts of surgeries for cryptorchidism and congenital heart malformations were observed throughout Japan from 2012 onward. The thyroid cancer detection rate (2011 to 2016) was associated with the dose-rate at the municipality level in the Fukushima prefecture. Since the birth weight is a simple and objective indicator for gestational development and pregnancy outcome, the question arises whether the annual birth weight distribution wa

HTLV-1 Extracellular Vesicles Promote Cell-to-Cell Contact.

Human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1) is a neglected and incurable retrovirus estimated to infect 5 to 10 million worldwide. Specific indigenous Australian populations report infection rates of more than 40%, suggesting a potential evolution of the virus with global implications. HTLV-1 causes adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), and a neurological disease named HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Even though HTLV-1 transmission primarily occurs from cell-to-cell, there is still a gap of knowledge regarding the mechanisms of viral spread and disease progress
