PURPOSE: We report our technique and also preliminary results in the cases with localized prostate cancer treated by the combination of high-dose rate Iridium-192 (HDR-Ir192) brachytherapy and external irradiation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 1999 to August 2000, 17 patients were treated by the combination of HDR-Ir 192 and external beam. The mean age of patients was 72 years (range, 48-81 years). PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective analysis is to assess the effectiveness of postoperative irradiation with a strontium 90 (Sr-90) contact applicator in the prevention of recurrence of resected pterygia.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty five patients were treated with Sr-90 postoperative radiation therapy performed immediately after surgery. The dose of irradiation was 2500 cGy in five fractions using a standard Sr-90 applicator.

Bowel transit in two women with protracted constipation was evaluated after oral administration of In-111 DTPA in water. Serial abdominal images were obtained for as long as 96 hours to assess transit through the stomach, small bowel, and colon. In both patients, large bowel transit was delayed. A pattern of colonic inertia was observed in one patient, whereas retention in the distal colon was seen in the other patient. Both patients underwent total colectomy with marked symptomatic relief. Colonic transit studies of these patients are presented, and the literature is reviewed.

A patient who underwent I-131 therapy for a solitary toxic thyroid nodule subsequently experienced vocal cord paralysis, a rare complication. The patient was examined because of hoarseness 1 week after treatment. Indirect laryngoscopy at the time confirmed right vocal cord paralysis. We report the case of a 42-year-old female who presented with symptoms of thyrotoxicosis and an expanding submandibular swelling. Metastatic tumor is one of several etiologies of space-occupying masses in the orbit that accounts for 1%-13% of all orbital masses (1). Two Caucasian patients are described who had destructive postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) before the subsequent onset of Graves' hyperthyroidism (GH). HLA class II DQ typing in these two subjects identified putative susceptibility alleles previously detected in GH and PPT. Although PPT destructive thyroiditis preceding the development of GH is relatively uncommon, the occurrence of both these syndromes in the same patient suggests the possibility of an etiological role for thyroid antigen release and genetic susceptibility as pathogenic factors in the development of Graves' disease.
