Managing sleep disturbances in children with atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, pruritic inflammatory disease that often disrupts sleep in severely affected children, but there are limited studies to guide clinical management of these sleep problems. Disease control is crucial in improving sleep, but additional sleep aids may sometimes be helpful in decreasing scratching during the night. This review discusses the benefits and limitations of potential therapeutic agents available to manage sleep disturbances in children with atopic dermatitis.

Angelman syndrome in adolescence and adulthood: A retrospective chart review of 53 cases.

Angelman syndrome is a neurogenetic disorder with varying clinical presentations and symptoms as the individual ages. The goal of this study was to characterize changes over time in the natural history of this syndrome in a large population. We reviewed the medical records of the 53 patients who were born prior to 2000 and seen at the Angelman Syndrome Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital to assess neurological, sleep, behavioral, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, and ophthalmologic functioning. The average age of this cohort was 24 years. Active seizures were present in 35%, nonepileptic myoc

Changes in brain arousal (EEG-vigilance) after therapeutic sleep deprivation in depressive patients and healthy controls.

Depressed patients frequently exhibit a hyperstable brain arousal regulation. According to the arousal regulation model of affective disorders, the antidepressant effect of therapeutic sleep deprivation could be achieved by counter-acting this dysregulation. We investigated the impact of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on EEG-vigilance (an indicator of brain arousal regulation) in depressed patients (n = 27) and healthy controls (n = 16). PSD was hypothesized to cause a more prominent destabilisation of brain arousal regulation in depressed patients (reflected by increased occurrence of lower

Symptom Trajectories Are Associated With Co-occurring Symptoms During Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer.

CONTEXT: Symptoms are reported to co-occur during treatment for breast cancer. We previously identified three patterns of fatigue and two patterns of disturbed sleep, depressed mood, and anxiety in women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer using a Latent Growth Mixture Model. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore whether membership in symptom classes of fatigue, disturbed sleep, depressed mood, and anxiety is associated with other symptoms at moderate-to-severe levels. METHODS: Using data from three longitudinal studies, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests and Jonckheere-Terpstra te

Seasonal player wellness and its longitudinal association with internal training load: study in elite volleyball.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring training load is critical to minimize the risk of overreaching, injury or illness. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships and variance between perceived internal load and wellness status of elite male volleyball. METHODS: Thirteen elite volleyball players were studied during a full competitive season (nine months, 237 training sessions and 37 official matches). Perceived exertion, muscle soreness, stress, fatigue and sleep quality levels were daily measured using session RPE and the Hopper Questionnaire. RESULTS: Moderate-to-large correlations were f

Sleep disturbance in men receiving androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer: The role of hot flashes and nocturia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are at risk of sleep disturbance; however, to the authors' knowledge, the mechanisms by which ADT may affect sleep are not well understood. The current study compared objective and subjective sleep disturbance in ADT recipients and controls and examined whether sleep disturbance in ADT recipients is attributable to the influence of ADT on hot flashes and nocturia. METHODS: Patients with prostate cancer were assessed before or within 1 month after the initiation of ADT as well as 6 months and 12 months later

It's not as bad as you think: menopausal representations are more positive in postmenopausal women.

INTRODUCTION: The menopausal transition is associated with underlying hormonal changes that can contribute to a range of physical and emotional symptoms. Psycho-social factors including attitudes and internal representations play a central role in women's experience of the menopause, but very little is known about how representations might differ across menopausal stages. METHODS: A sample of 387 women aged 40-60 completed a postal questionnaire that included the menopausal representations questionnaire, the emotional representation subscale adapted from the illness perception questionnaire,

When sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) met Charles Darwin and Francis Galton.

Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) is characterized by short-lasting seizures patterned by repetitive and stereotyped motor events in the same person. In autosomal dominant SHE, genetic factors play a well-known key role. In The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals, Charles Darwin quotes a plausible example of SHE illustrated by his cousin Sir Francis Galton: "the gentleman…lay fast asleep on his back in bed, raising his right arm slowly in front of his face, up to his forehead, and then dropping it with a jerk, so that the wrist fell heavily on the bridge of his nose. The trick did

Yoga for improving health-related quality of life, mental health and cancer-related symptoms in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the cancer most frequently diagnosed in women worldwide. Even though survival rates are continually increasing, breast cancer is often associated with long-term psychological distress, chronic pain, fatigue and impaired quality of life. Yoga comprises advice for an ethical lifestyle, spiritual practice, physical activity, breathing exercises and meditation. It is a complementary therapy that is commonly recommended for breast cancer-related impairments and has been shown to improve physical and mental health in people with different cancer types. OBJECTIVES: To as

Quality of life among postmenopausal women enrolled in the Minnesota Green Tea Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal symptomatology has not been elucidated in large, long-term human clinical trials. Our objective was to measure quality of life in postmenopausal women aged 50-70 years. METHODS: A Menopause-Specific Quality of Life-Intervention (MENQOL) questionnaire was completed by women enrolled in the Minnesota Green Tea Trial (n=932) to assess vasomotor, physical, sexual, and psychosocial symptoms in the years following menopause. Responses were coded; mean overall and domain scores ranged from 1 to 8. A higher score indicated more severe symptoms. RESULTS: Mean overall MENQOL

Sleep related bradyarrhythmic events and heart rate variability in apparently healthy individuals.

OBJECTIVE: It is thought that abnormal cardiac impulses of the autonomic nervous system during sleep are responsible for sleep-related bradyarrhythmias. Despite a proposed common etiopathogenesis and having common name of "sleep-related bradyarrhythmias," precise importance of sinoatrial or atrioventricular (AV) node involvement remains elusive. This study aimed to determine whether there is a difference in sleeprelated bradyarrhythmias from the point of view of heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: Patients were evaluated using 24-hour Holter electrocardiogram monitor. After careful medical

Sleep deprivation in the last trimester of pregnancy and inadequate vitamin D: Is there a relationship?

BACKGROUND: Disturbed sleep is a significant health issue for pregnant women. Inadequate vitamin D intake is common among pregnant women and can affect many bodily systems. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to test the hypothesis that serum vitamin D levels are low in pregnant women who have poor sleep quality in their last trimester. METHODS: We enrolled 92 pregnant women who were admitted to the Maternity Clinic of Turgut Ozal University (Ankara, Turkey) in their last trimester. Venous blood sampling was performed to determine serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Sleep quality was

Assessment of multiple sleep latency testing in adults in Europe.

UNLABELLED: Guidelines for the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) were published in 1986 and updated in 2005. Individual interpretation of instructions may lead to variability in conducting and reporting the test with implications for diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To assess variability in conducting MSLT among sleep laboratories in Europe. METHODS: A questionnaire based on the clinical MSLT guidelines was posted or emailed to 283 sleep centres in Europe. RESULTS: Ninety adult laboratories performing MSLT returned the questionnaire. Indications for MSLT were: narcolepsy, excessive daytime somnolence
