Multi-factorial considerations for intra-thoracic lymph node evaluations of healthy cats on computed tomographic images.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to examine mild to moderate feline intra-thoracic lymphadenopathy via and thoracic radiography. Despite previous information from computed tomographic (CT) images of intra-thoracic lymph nodes, some factors from animals and CT setting were less elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of internal factors from animals and external factors from the CT procedure on the feasibility to detect the intra-thoracic lymph nodes. Twenty-four, client-owned, clinically healthy cats were categorized into three groups according to age. They underwent pre-

Pericardial Angiosarcoma: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Cardiac angiosarcomas are the most common malignant primary cardiac tumors accounting for 31% of all primary cardiac tumors. However, primary pericardial angiosarcomas are extremely rare and are associated with high mortality. A 41-year-old male with a past medical history of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis, follicular thyroid carcinoma, hypertension, and asthma presented with recurrent pericardial effusions. Previously, different imaging modalities had shown small hemodynamically stable pericardial effusions with pericardial thickening. His pericardial effusion was attributed t

Single-step localization and excision of small pulmonary nodules using a mobile 3D C-arm.

OBJECTIVES: The use of a hybrid operating room equipped with robotic C-arm cone-beam computed tomography for single-step localization and excision of small pulmonary nodules finds high cost barriers. The new generation of 3D C-arm system not only depicts soft tissues with high contrast but also offers a more affordable and sustainable solution. This approach has been chiefly applied in the field of orthopedic surgery. In this case series, we describe the use of a mobile 3D C-arm system for localizing and removing small pulmonary nodules. METHODS: Between July and September 2020, we identified

Wavelet analysis for early identification of HRV changes in offspring with genetic predisposition to hypertension in Oman.

BACKGROUND: Offspring with a genetic predisposition to hypertension may have higher blood pressure (BP) at rest compared with those without a genetic predisposition to hypertension. They are also expected to have a higher sympathetic component in the heart rate variability (HRV) which could be computed with signal processing algorithms. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to design a wavelet-based system to estimate the heart rate variability that can be used to detect early cardiovascular changes in offspring with a genetic predisposition to hypertension. Early detection will help in the

White matter imaging of ethanol-fixed rat brain by phase-contrast X-ray computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Phase-contrast X-ray computed tomography imaging (PCI) based on crystal X-ray interferometry can detect minute density differences within biological soft tissues without contrast agents. Ethanol fixation yields increased tissue-background density differences due to the dehydrating and delipidifying effects of ethanol. PURPOSE: To obtain high image contrast of cerebral white matter structures in PCI, tissue fixation using ethanol and routinely used formalin have been examined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ethanol-fixed (EF) (n = 4) and formalin-fixed (FF) (n = 4) rat brains were imaged b

Artificial red blood cells increase large vessel wall damage and decrease surrounding dermal tissue damage in a rabbit auricle model after subsequent flashlamp-pumped pulsed-dye laser treatment.

Artificial red blood cells (i.e. hemoglobin [Hb] vesicles [Hb-Vs]) function effectively as photosensitizers in flashlamp-pumped pulsed-dye laser (PDL) treatment for port-wine stains in animal models. Hb-Vs deliver more Hb to the vicinity of the endothelial cells. Both Hb-Vs and red blood cells absorb the laser energy and generate heat, supporting the removal of very small blood vessels and deeper subcutaneous blood vessels with PDL irradiation in in vivo experiments. Here, we analyzed the photosensitizing effect of Hb-Vs in PDL irradiation on large blood vessels and surrounding soft tissues. W

Radiologic Analysis of Malar Arch Movement in Reduction Malarplasty Without Bony Resection.

BACKGROUND: Reduction malarplasty has been popular among Asians with a wide facial width. In general, malar setback after bony resection is regarded as the standard objective of reduction malarplasty. However, unnecessary bony resection may lead to various postoperative complications. Therefore, we suggest the use of reduction malarplasty without bony resection to achieve a similar narrowing effect of the facial width, based on radiographic analysis of malar arch movement. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 48 patients with a wide midface who underwent reduction malarplas

Successful Treatment of an Acute High-Dose Clozapine Poisoning without Detoxication.

BACKGROUND Clozapine is a well-proven atypical antipsychotic drug used for therapy of treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Over the last decades only a few cases of clozapine poisoning have been reported. Hence, guidelines for in-hospital management are currently not available. Most of the reported cases underwent detoxication measures as charcoal therapy and/or gastric lavage. However, there is no evidence for primary detoxication to improve clinical outcome. In contrast, use of therapy with intravenous physostigmine in the case of anticholinergic syndrome is restricted due to concerns about sa

Invasive Klebsiella syndrome with coexisting fungal endophthalmitis.

Endogenous endophthalmitis accounts for approximately 5 - 10% of all endophthalmitis cases. We report a case of a middle-aged gentleman with underlying uncontrolled diabetes mellitus who presented with fever and generalised body weakness for one week. He was diagnosed with invasive Klebsiella syndrome based on blood culture with presence of bilateral pleural effusion, liver abscess, renal impairment and sphenoidal sinusitis. The patient developed sudden bilateral painless reduced vision on day two of admission. Ocular examination revealed bilateral severe anterior chamber reaction and severe v

Severe neck pain and odynophagia secondary to acute calcific longus colli tendinitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute calcific longus colli tendinitis is a rare, noninfectious inflammatory condition caused by the deposition of calcium crystals. The condition is self-limiting, yet commonly misdiagnosed. Here we report a case of a patient with severe neck pain and odynophagia initially misdiagnosed as a retropharyngeal abscess before establishing the correct diagnosis of acute calcific longus colli tendinitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old Caucasian man presented to an outside emergency department with a 5-day history of neck pain and odynophagia. The neck pain was severe and aggravated by

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the temporal bone: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare form of benign bone tumor and easily misdiagnosed as fibrosarcoma. Hence, to explore the clinical manifestations, diagnostic tests, and therapeutic procedures for temporal bone cartilage myxoid fibroma, it is important to optimize patient treatment and avoid overtreatment. Previous research has discussed cases of CMF, but this paper presents a systematic, complete, and comprehensive introduction of this disease based on this case and related literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old male patient presented with pain in his right ear for 2 year

The arthroscopic Latarjet: a multisurgeon learning curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: The open Latarjet procedure is a standard surgical treatment option for anterior shoulder instability in patients with a high risk of failure following soft tissue stabilization. The arthroscopic technique has potential advantages of minimal invasiveness, reduced postoperative stiffness, and faster rehabilitation but is regarded as technically challenging with concern over surgical risk during the learning curve. The aim of this study was to undertake a multisurgeon, large-volume learning curve analysis of the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure using continuous learning curve analysis

Paraspinal Fat Stranding as an Unexpected Finding on Body Computed Tomography: A Key to Early Detection of Spinal Osteomyelitis.

OBJECTIVE: At present, early detection of spinal osteomyelitis is a challenge. Patients may present with non-specific symptoms and diagnostic imaging studies may be obtained for seemingly unrelated complaints. Paraspinal fat stranding on body computed tomography (CT) as a sign of osteomyelitis is easily overlooked and has not been reported in the literature to our knowledge. The purpose of this study is to review findings on body CT that points to unsuspected spinal osteomyelitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with spinal osteomyelitis who also had concomitant chest
