We report the case of a 23-year-old asthmatic woman who had clinical and radiological deterioration due to Mycobacterium szulgai infection and good response to anti-mycobacterial treatment without any structural abnormalities in previous lung imaging studies. M. szulgai may be considered a pathogen able to cause deterioration of respiratory health even in patients with previously normal lungs.

Development of novel diagnostics for tuberculosis has so far been governed by the clinical requirement of improving the detection of patients with paucibacillary forms of the disease. BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis, caused by a lung fluke, is an parasitic disease rarely encountered in France.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man developed dyspnea, cough, mild fever and chest pain. Pleural effusion suggested possible pulmonary embolism or tuberculosis. Cell counts in blood and pleural effusion fluid revealed major eosinophila in this patient who had recently returned from a trip to Japan. Paragonimiasis was confirmed by ELISA. Treatment with praziquantel led to complete clinical and radiographic recovery.

A 64-year old man died from a travel-associated legionella pneumonia six weeks after onset of the disease. A shower nozzle, contaminated with legionellae, in a German hotel was traced as the source of infection. Methanol extracts of hydrolyzed expectorate samples from workers in a coke plant were tested with the Salmonella reversion assay. The expectorates from exposed smokers (but also to a certain extent from exposed non-smokers) were mutagenic; however, the control samples from both smokers and non-smokers were not. The positive results produced by the expectorate samples from exposed smokers suggest a synergistic relationship between exposure to air pollution in the working atmosphere and smoking.

To investigate the characteristics of bronchial mucus in bronchopneumopathic patients before and after stepronine-lysine salt treatment, a rheological double-blind randomised study has been performed. The assessment of the rheological behaviour of bronchial secretions was performed using a coaxial cylinder rheometer set up for dynamic test with sinusoidal oscillation. While the placebo group did not show significant modifications in the viscosity and elasticity parameters, in the stepronine group a significant viscosity reduction was found.

m- and p-aminobenzoic acids were converted to the title compounds by sequential use of ClCH2COCl, SOCl2, glycine methyl or ethyl ester, AcSK, and hydrolysis. The title compounds and a number of salts were compared for mucolytic activity, toxicity, stability, and hygroscopicity. When compared to N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), the compounds exhibit several times the in vitro mucolytic activity of NAC on a molar basis. The most promising candidate appears to be the sodium salt 3.5H2O 2 of the meta series.
