During the year 1983, 170 patients underwent open heart surgery; coronary bypass surgery in 50, valve replacement in 69, valve repair in 9 and congenital heart surgery in 47. Sternal wound infection was seen in 14 patients: 10 (5.8%) patients had minor infection, recovered with extended antibiotic therapy and local hygiene, and 4 (2.3%) patients had major wound infection which required debridement and resuturing of the wound, prolonged antibiotic treatment and hospitalization. The aim of this study of 101 cases of infective endocarditis was to determine the factors predisposing to cardiac failure, the prognostic factors of this complication and the therapeutic implications. A significant (p less than 0.05) Chi square test was the statistical reference. A consecutive series of 44 patients with septic arthritis of finger joints is presented. The patients were treated with antibiotics, incision, debridement and usually drainage. Thirteen newborn babies were studied during an outbreak of scalded skin syndrome. Staphylococci isolated from seven babies were non-typable using the international set of typing phages; the remainder were of phage group II. In only one instance was there transmission of phage group II strains other than within families. The efficacy of sodium dicloxacillin was studied in the treatment of pyo-inflammatory diseases, such as pneumonia, pyothorax, pulmonary abscess, osteomyelitis, burn disease, infections of the skin and soft tissues and others, caused by multiresistant staphylococci and other organisms sensitive to the antibiotic. The drug was effective both orally or parenterally. Satisfactory results were observed in more than 80 per cent of the patients (children and adults). It was well tolerated by the patients.

In a retrospective sequential study we determined the rate of infection occurring despite cephalothin or cephapirin chemoprophylaxis in orthopedic and cardiac surgery done from 1973 to 1977. Two patients with Charcot joints developed septic arthritis. The infection in the first patient was treated successfully by repeated needle aspirations and parenteral oxacillin administration. In the second patient closed drainage and parenteral penicillin were not successful in eradicating the infection, and surgical incision with suction drainage was required. Seventy four cases of neonatal septicaemia seen at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) over a 3-year period were analysed. The incidence was 6.1 per 1,000 live births. Fifty five percent of the infants were low birth weight. The predisposing perinatal problems were asphyxia, prolonged rupture of membrane and peripartum maternal fever. Fourteen neonates (first 28 days of life) with septic arthritis were admitted into the neonatal unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital over a three year period.
