Adolescent attitudes toward serious mental illness.

While there is a growing literature on mental illness stigma and strategies for reducing stigma among adults, less is known about how children and adolescents view persons with mental illness. In this paper, we describe the Attitudes Toward Serious Mental Illness Scale-Adolescent Version (ATSMI-AV) and our initial examinations of its factor structure and variations among subgroups of adolescents. Findings suggest that strategies aimed at reducing stigma in this age group would be wise to specifically target categorical thinking about mental health and mental illness and perceptions of persons

Clinical subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder based on the presence of checking and washing compulsions.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed at examining the utility of checking and washing compulsions as markers of valid subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: One hundred and six patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder were evaluated with a socio-demographic and clinical questionnaire, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, the Clinical Global Impression, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, and the Global Assessment of Functioning. These individuals were allocated in one of four subgroups [checkers (OCD

Cultural feasibility assessment of tuberculosis prevention among persons of Haitian origin in South Florida.

A cultural feasibility study was conducted among persons of Haitian origin in South Florida to identify factors which might influence utilization of screening and treatment services for latent tuberculosis infection in this population. Five focus group interviews conducted among men and women explored cultural beliefs and practices related to TB, barriers and incentives to screening, and approaches to increasing treatment adherence. Key findings include the influence of social stigma and fears related to confidentiality of medical status as disincentives to screening. Cultural sensitivity to b

Beak gape dynamics during song in the zebra finch.

Bird song is a complex communication behavior that requires the coordination of several motor systems. Sound is produced in the syrinx and then modified by the upper vocal tract, but the specific nature and dynamics of this modification are not well understood. To determine the contribution of beak movements to sound modification, we studied the beak gape patterns in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Subsyringeal air sac pressure and song were recorded together with changes in beak gape, which were monitored with a magneto-sensitive transducer. Beak gape was positively correlated with funda

Effects of haloperidol and clozapine on neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity in the nucleus accumbens and striatum of rats pretreated with psychostimulants.

It has been shown that the synthesis, release and levels of neuropeptide Y (NPY), a peptide linked to the dopamine system, are altered by stimulants with psychotomimetic properties and by antipsychotic drugs. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of 3-day haloperidol (HAL) (2 mg/kg i.p.) or clozapine (CLOZ) (25 mg/kg i.p.) treatment on neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) in nucleus accumbens and striatum (caudate-putamen) in rats pretreated with d-amphetamine or phencyclidine. D-amphetamine (5 mg/kg s.c. twice daily for 6 days and once on day 7) and phencyclidine (10 mg/kg i

The breathing bear: an intervention for crying babies and their mothers.

The Breathing Bear, an optional source of rhythmic stimulation for infants, was investigated for its effects on full-term infants and their mothers. The Bear "breathes" like a normal infant at a rate matching the infant's. Previous studies have indicated that premature infants prefer a Breathing Bear over a Non-Breathing Bear, and they show neurobehavioral benefits from the exposure. A Breathing Bear was provided for 35 full-term infants, and a Non-Breathing Bear was provided for 37 infants from 5 weeks to 6 months postnatal age, all of whom were considered by their mothers to be fussy. The relationship between dopamine D2 receptor occupancy and the vacuous chewing movement syndrome in rats.

RATIONALE: A dose-response relationship between dopamine D(2) occupancy and acute extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) has been well established. However, the link with the induction of tardive dyskinesia (TD) is less clear. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the nature and extent of D(2) receptor occupancy effects on haloperidol-induced vacuous chewing movements (VCMs) in a rat model of TD. METHODS: Groups of eight rats received haloperidol decanoate injections corresponding to daily doses of 0, 0.08, 0.17, 0.33, or 1 mg/kg for 10-12 weeks. VCMs were measured on a weekly basis and D(2) occupancy levels were

Relationships of stigma and shame to gonorrhea and HIV screening.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between stigma and shame associated with seeking treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and undergoing testing for gonorrhea and HIV. METHODS: Participants were 847 males and 1126 females (mean age: 24.9 years) in 7 cities. Two scales assessed STD-related stigma and STD-related shame. RESULTS: Rates of stigma and shame were higher among participants without a gonorrhea test in the past year and among those without an HIV test. Sex, age, health service use, previous suspicion of gonorrhea, and low levels of stig

[Glutamate receptor antagonists attenuate experimental catalepsy in rats].

A long-term akinesia induced by haloperidol used as an experimental model of catalepsy helped to reveal that a dicationic derivatives adamantane (IEM-1754) and phenylcyclohexyl (IEM-1925) exerted different degrees of inhibition of the haloperidol effect: the IEM-1754 proved to be not inferior to the most effective NMDA antagonist MK-801. A relatively low potency of the IEM-1925 may be due to its obvious equal effects both on the NMDA and the AMPA receptor channels. A good correlation between the anticataleptic effects of the glutamate antagonists and the NMDA receptor blocking activity, were f

Central GABA activation and behaviors evoked by tail-pinch stress in the rat.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the possibility that central GABA(A) receptors are involved in the stress response of rats. Separate groups of animals were implanted bilaterally with cannulae in the lateral cerebral ventricle, substantia nigra, and anterior to the rostral margin of the substantia nigra. Microinjections of the GABA(A) agonist muscimol into each of these areas augmented the stress response evoked by moderate tail pinch. Although consistent changes in the amount of food eaten in response to stress were not observed, stress-evoked gnawing was significantly increased by musc

Naloxone does not alter amphetamine-induced rotational behavior or striatal dopamine levels of nigrally-lesioned rats.

Previous studies on rats have shown that the opioid antagonist naloxone attenuates amphetamine-induced stimulation of locomotor activity and increases in extracellular dopamine in the brain. However, in this study, naloxone did not attenuate amphetamine-induced rotational behavior or increases of extracellular dopamine in the intact striatum of nigrally-lesioned rats. These results suggests differences in the way in which endogenous opioids contribute to the behavioral and neurochemical effects of amphetamine in nigrally-lesioned compared to intact rats.

Gradation of kainic acid-induced rat limbic seizures and expression of hippocampal heat shock protein-70.

Systemic injection of kainic acid (KA) induces limbic seizures in rats, which resemble human temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common form of adult human epilepsy. In this study, we have investigated KA-elicited limbic seizures in the rats by correlating the severity of the seizure attacks with the expression of hippocampal heat shock protein-70 (HSP70) which has been suggested to be a marker for neuronal injury/death in this model of seizures. After a systemic injection of KA, six stages of limbic seizures have been classified, namely, staring (stage 1), wet dog shake (stage 2), hyperactivity

The effects of cocaine and nandrolone co-administration on aggression in male rats.

1. Cocaine and anabolic-androgenic steroids are among the more commonly abused substances in selected populations. These agents, when used alone or in combination, have been reported to cause aggressive tendencies in both laboratory-based animal models and in human clinical situations. This project, using a resident-intruder paradigm, examined the effects of co-administration of cocaine and a typical anabolic-androgenic steroid, nandrolone decanoate, on the development of aggression in male Sprague-Dawley rats. 2. Dose response studies demonstrated that low dose cocaine (1 mg/kg) produced more

Does imagined exposure to the consequences of not ritualising enhance live exposure for OCD? A controlled study. II. Effect on behavioural v. subjective concordance of improvement.

BACKGROUND: This study tested whether adding imagined exposure to live exposure would increase the concordance between behavioural and subjective improvement in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHOD: 46 OCD out-patients were randomly allocated to 9 weekly sessions of either combined live+imagined exposure/ritual prevention (Exi, n = 23), or only live exposure/ritual prevention (Ex, n = 23). Patients were asked to do 90 min of daily self-exposure at home (corresponding to Exi or Ex). Measures were: (A) behavioural; (B) subjective; (C) clinical global impression (CGI). RESULTS: After 9 w

Lamotrigine has no antiparkinsonian activity in rat models of Parkinson's disease.

In rodent models of Parkinson's disease such as reserpinized or 6-hydroxydopamine substantia nigra lesioned rats, blockade of glutamate receptors of the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) or the AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate) receptor subtypes and concomitant treatment with L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) or direct dopamine agonists restores locomotor activity and induces rotations. An alternative approach to interfere with glutamatergic transmission would involve the inhibition of glutamate release resulting in functional glutamate antagonism. The novel antiepilept

Risperidone in the treatment of pervasive developmental disorder.

Elevated concentrations of blood serotonin have been documented in autistic children and mentally retarded adults. Antiserotonergic pharmacotherapy has been partially effective in treating a subgroup of children with autistic disorder. Therefore, the possibility is raised that an antiserotonergic treatment may be of value to adult psychiatric patients with a history of pervasive developmental disorder. Two such cases are described where the patients underwent psychiatric and neuropsychological examination before and after treatment with risperidone, a potent 5-HT2 antagonist with additional D2
