Anabolic steroid use among substance abusers in treatment.

BACKGROUND: Increasing illicit use of anabolic steroids in adolescent and young adult populations has been reported. To determine the scope of this problem and its relationship to psychoactive substance abuse, we evaluated the prevalence of anabolic steroid use among individuals seeking inpatient treatment for substance abuse. METHOD: A randomized mail survey of 175 inpatient substance abuse treatment directors elicited information regarding the prevalence of anabolic steroid use for inpatients treated in 1989 and the first half of 1990. Additionally, directors were surveyed for experience wi

Changes over time in heroin and cocaine use among injecting drug users in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 1985-1989.

Three hundred and eighty six injecting drug users entered into an HIV study through methadone programs over a 40 month period. Differences in oral, intranasal and parenteral use of heroin and cocaine were assessed between four consecutive 10 month intake groups. Heroin smoking and cocaine freebasing were increased in the later intake groups, while there were no significant changes in injecting variables. No relationship between sexual risk behaviour and cocaine freebasing was found. HIV seropositivity was less among cocaine freebasers at 19% compared to 32% among non freebasers. The increase i

Morphine analgesia and acute physical dependence: rapid onset of two opposing, dose-related processes.

Enhanced responsiveness to noxious stimulation is a reliable sign of opioid withdrawal and is therefore a measure of physical dependence. In lightly anesthetized rats, naloxone, given i.v. 15 min following i.v. morphine, caused a significant shortening of tail flick latency (hyperalgesia). At each dose of naloxone (0.1, 1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg), the magnitude of the observed hyperalgesia was a function of the preceding dose of morphine (0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg). Thus morphine rapidly induces two dose-related opposing processes: one results in antinociception and the other in the potential for hyperalge

Physical dependence capacity of brotizolam in rhesus monkeys. 2nd communication: primary dependence and barbital substitution.

The degree of physical dependence induced by oral administration of brotizolam (2-bromo-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-9-methyl-6H-thieno [3,2-f]-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]-1,4-diazepine, We 941, Lendormin), triazolam, diazepam and nitrazepam in rhesus monkeys was evaluated in primary dependence studies. Substitution tests were performed in barbital-dependent animals. In the primary dependence studies, two dosages of each compound were administered for four weeks to compare the effects on motocoordination and development of body weight as well as the withdrawal symptoms after interruption of these chronic admi

Evidence for GABA tolerance in barbiturate-dependent and withdrawn mice.

Mice were rendered tolerant and dependent to barbital by a chronic feeding schedule of barbital over 5 weeks. The behavioural effects of muscimol, imidazole-acetic acid (ImAA), and gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) were measured in control, barbital-dependent, and mice dependent on barbital 48 hr after withdrawal of the drug. The sedative effects of the GABA-mimetics imidazole-acetic acid and muscimol were increased in dependent mice, but reduced in withdrawn mice. Subanaesthetic doses of barbital, given acutely, also increased the sedative effects of imidazole-acetic acid and muscimol but not o

Barbiturate and hypnosedative withdrawal by a multiple oral phenobarbital loading dose technique.

Although intravenous phenobarbital loading is effective in barbiturate withdrawal, controlled infusions of a drug are inconvenient. To develop a practical and more widely applicable method, oral loading doses of phenobarbital were given to 21 barbiturate addicts, whose estimated mean daily intake of barbiturates was 1 gm (range 0.5 to 4 gm). Twelve had a past or present history of barbiturate withdrawal seizures. Phenobarbital was given orally at a rate of 120 mg/hr until a predetermined clinical end point of phenobarbital effect was achieved. This end point was the presence of at least three

Cross-diagnostic evaluation of minor physical anomalies in psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Minor physical anomalies (MPA) are markers of impaired neurodevelopment during the prenatal stage. Assessing MPA across psychiatric disorders may help understand their shared nature. In addition, MPA in family members would indicate a shared liability and endophenotype potential. We examined familial aggregation of MPA and their role as transdiagnostic and disorder-specific markers of 5 major psychiatric/neuropsychiatric conditions (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance dependence, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Alzheimer's dementia). METHODS: Modified Waldrop's MPA scale

A Case Report of Isopropanol Ingestion During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with substance use disorder may be particularly vulnerable to withdrawal-related complications during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. Limited availability of alcohol and other substances coupled with decreased accessibility to substance use treatment poses a substantial risk to this population. Isopropanol, the active ingredient in rubbing alcohol, is widely available; thus, it may be used in times of scarcity. CASE REPORT: We present a case of intentional isopropanol ingestion used as an ethanol surrogate within the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: T

Investigating the sequential patterns of methamphetamine use initiation in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (MA) remains one of the most commonly used amphetamine-type stimulants, accounting for the second most widely-used substance after marijuana. Due to increased use of MA, a wide variety of research has focused on the patterns of MA use initiation among adolescents. Nevertheless, there are few data available for people who use MA. The present study set out to assess the sequential patterns of substance use initiation in patients with MA use disorders in Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study described substance initiation patterns for 302 patients wh

Childhood maltreatment, prefrontal-paralimbic gray matter volume, and substance use in young adults and interactions with risk for bipolar disorder.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with adverse effects on the brain, and an increased risk for psychopathology, including mood and substance use disorders. Individuals vary on the degree to which they exhibit neurobiological and clinical differences following maltreatment. Individuals with bipolar disorder exhibit greater magnitude of maltreatment-related prefrontal-paralimbic gray matter volume (GMV) deficits compared to typically developing individuals. It is unclear if greater structural differences stem from greater neural vulnerability to maltreatment in bipolar disorder, or if they re

Child reward neurocircuitry and parental substance use history: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use research has focused on family history of alcohol use disorders but less on other addictions in biological family members. We examined how parental substance use history relates to reward system functioning, specifically nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and putamen activation at age 9-10 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. This research hopes to address limitations in prior literature by focusing analyses on a large, substance-naïve sample. METHOD: We included ABCD participants with valid Monetary Incentive Delay task fMRI Baseline data and parent sub

Developmental trajectories of externalizing behavior from ages 4 to 12: Prenatal cocaine exposure and adolescent correlates.

BACKGROUND: Although prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) has been linked with greater externalizing behavior, no studies have investigated heterogeneity of developmental trajectories in children with PCE to date. The present study aimed to: (1) identify developmental trajectories of externalizing problems in childhood by using a person-oriented analytic approach; (2) examine whether trajectories differ by PCE and other environmental and biological correlates; and (3) investigate how trajectories were associated with adolescent substance use and sexual behavior. METHODS: Adolescents (N = 386; 197

Affect dysregulation in cannabis abusers: a study in adolescents and young adults.

Psychiatric comorbidity and impaired emotional functioning have been previously reported in adult substance abusers but have been less well documented in adolescents. Thus, we investigated mental health problems and emotion regulation abilities in adolescents and young adults with cannabis dependence. Moreover, we explored the relationships between consumption modalities and affective style. Therefore, 32 cannabis abusers (CA) and 30 healthy controls completed a battery of self-reports measuring depression (BDI-13), anxiety (STAI-Y), alexithymia (TAS20; BVAQ-B), anhedonia (PAS; SAS), and sensa

Drug-related celebrity deaths: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Celebrities are at risk for premature mortality as well as drug-related death. Despite being a vulnerable patient group, celebrities influence people's health behaviours through biological, psychological and social processes. Therefore, celebrity endorsement of the topic could be one way to challenge the current "opioid endemic". Our aim was to better understand the factors surrounding drug-related celebrity deaths by investigating the incidence as well as substances used between 1970 and 2015 using a cross-sectional study design. METHOD: We searched public databases for drug-rela

The use of alcohol and drugs to self-medicate symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Self-medication has been proposed as an explanation for the high rates of comorbidity between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders; however, knowledge of self-medication in PTSD is scarce. We describe the prevalence and correlates of self-medication in PTSD in the general population. METHODS: Data came from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Wave 2 (N=34,653; response rate: 70.2%), a nationally representative survey of mental illness in community-dwelling adults. Self-medication was assessed separately for alcohol and dr

Lifetime suicide attempt history, quality of life, and objective functioning among HIV/AIDS patients with alcohol and illicit substance use disorders.

This cross-sectional study evaluated lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts in 170 HIV/AIDS patients with substance use disorders and the impact of suicide attempt history on subjective indices of quality of life and objective indices of cognitive and physical functioning. All patients met the diagnostic criteria for past-year cocaine or opioid use disorders and 27% of patients also had co-occurring alcohol use disorders. Compared to their counterparts without a history of a suicide attempt, patients with a history of a suicide attempt (n = 60, 35.3%) had significantly poorer emotional and co

Prospective Intergenerational Associations between Parents' and Children's Illicit Substance Use During Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Intergenerational studies have identified relations between adolescents' and their future offspring's cannabis and alcohol use, but rarely have examined the association for other illicit drug use. Given the low prevalence of such use in community populations, we pooled data from three prospective intergenerational studies to test this link. METHOD: Participants were 1,060 children of 937 parents who had been repeatedly assessed since early adolescence. Children and parents reported on their use of cocaine, stimulants, hallucinogens, sedatives/tranquilizers, and opiates/narcotics fr
