The utility of base deficit (BD) as a marker of shock and as an indicator of resuscitation requirements has been recognized in the trauma population. Base deficit in thermally injured patients has not been closely examined. Survival rates, renal function, and histopathology were evaluated in 49 prospectively followed patients transplanted under 5 years of age at our center. Most patients (84%) suffered from congenital nephrosis of the Finnish type. Triple immunosuppression with cyclosporine administered in three daily doses to pre-school children was used. Pulmonary manifestations of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) are many. The mean survival in these patients is 78 +/- 17 months. Improved diagnostic techniques and better therapeutic options are essential to stem the tide of overwhelming mortality in patients with scleroderma lung disease.
