Oral contraceptive steroids do not promote the development or growth of prolactinomas.

Seventy women with prolactinomas, age 19-38 years, were studied in order to evaluate a possible relationship between the use of steroidal or … e women with prolactinomas was not higher than among the total female population of the same age in Sweden. Furthermore, patients on o.c. for several years did not show a more advanced form of the disease than women who had not taken the pill. Studies on healing of Debrisan-treated wounds.

Debrisan (Pharmacia AB, Sweden) is a highly hydrophilic dextran polymer in the form of dry, spheric beads. When dry Debrisan beads are placed on a wound, the wound secretions are sucked up into and between the beads. No crust is formed on the wound. Bacteria granular substances are removed with the secretions. Treatment with Debrisan was found to be very effective in cleansing discharging wounds. Since Debrisan treatment removes substances from the wound area, e.g. prostaglandins, this might affect the process of repair. The morphology of wounds was studied with the aid of histological and his…

Infection Risks Among Patients With Multiple Sclerosis Treated With Fingolimod, Natalizumab, Rituximab, and Injectable Therapies.

IMPORTANCE: Although highly effective disease-modifying therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS) have been associated with an increased risk of infections vs injectable therapies interferon beta and glatiramer acetate (GA), the magnitude of potential risk increase is not well established in real-world populations. Even less is known about infection risk associated with rituximab, which is extensively used off-label to treat MS in Sweden. OBJECTIVE: To examine the risk of serious infections associated with disease-modifying treatments for MS. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nationwide re…

Meat Consumption and Cognitive Health by APOE Genotype.

IMPORTANCE: The apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele increases Alzheimer disease risk. Understanding genotype-specific dietary needs could inform more personalized prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that higher meat consumption may be associated with cognitive health benefits in individuals with APOE genotypes ε3/ε4 and ε4/ε4 (APOE34/44) and to examine whether this association differs from that in other genotypes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used panel data analyses conducted in January 2025 to January 2026 over 15 years of follow-

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this nationwide cohort study conducted in Sweden, bidirectional associations were found between PMD and psychiatric disorders and conditions, highlighting the need for sex- and menstrual cycle-informed care in psychiatry. Suggested Novel Risk Factors for Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema: Asthma and Limited Open Water Swimming Experience.

BACKGROUND: Swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE) has gained increasing attention in recent years. However, risk factors for SIPE remain incompletely understood, and existing data are primarily based on small-scale studies. RESEARCH QUESTION: Which individual risk factors are associated with SIPE? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a case-control study based on Sweden's largest open water swimming event, Vansbrosimningen. Data were obtained through interviews with individuals diagnosed with SIPE in 2017 to 2024 and through a web-based survey administered to control participants without…

Associations between psychedelic use and migraine history in Swedish twins.

BACKGROUND: While psychedelics have shown initial promise in the treatment of migraine, experimental studies have relied on small and homogenous samples, which limit the reliability and generalizability of findings. These limitations underscore the complementary value of other research designs that leverage larger and more representative samples. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included three cohorts of twins from the Swedish Twin Registry and evaluated associations between psychedelic use and migraine history. RESULTS: In this study, 50,726 twins answered questions related to the use of

Impact of current and previous smoking on fracture risk in older women: the role of physical function, bone density, and bone microarchitecture.

While smoking is a known risk factor for fractures, its precise mechanisms among older women, particularly involving physical function, bone density, and bone microarchitecture, remain incompletely understood. This prospective cohort study included 3024 community-dwelling Swedish women aged 75-80 yr, followed for a median of 7.3 yr. Participants were categorized as current smokers (n = 157), former smokers (n = 1343), and never smokers (n = 1524). Radiographically verified fractures and all-cause mortality were assessed. Ursodeoxycholic acid treatment did not show protective effect for severe COVID-19 outcomes - a nationwide register study.

BACKGROUND: Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), used for treating cholestasis, was reported to protect against severe COVID-19 outcomes. We aimed to assess this potential effect using nationwide Swedish register data. METHOD: We included all SARS-CoV-2 test-positive subjects aged ≥ 18 years during 2020–2023, with previous diagnosis of potentially UDCA-treated diseases, including primary biliary cholangitis, liver cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis, or cholangitis. Subjects who had filled a UDCA prescription within 6 months before testing positive were considered exposed. Subjects were followed from test

Making Sense of Bullying: Brooding and subsequent sleep problems in seemingly safe work environments.

BACKGROUND: Work and sleep mutually influence one another: adequate sleep supports cognitive functioning and social regulation at work, whereas safe and respectful working conditions facilitate recovery and sleep. Although workplace bullying has been proposed as an important work-related determinant of sleep problems, the empirical base has been dominated by cross-sectional research, with comparatively few longitudinal studies. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying this association, as well as the potential reverse association, remain poorly understood. METHODS: Using a large longitudinal nat

The role of medical evidence certifying PTSD for legal outcomes in Swedish asylum cases 2016-2020.

Medical evidence is introduced when health conditions are invoked as legally relevant circumstances in asylum cases. Although research shows that medical evidence can affect asylum outcomes, we lack systematic knowledge of how it is assigned legal relevance, especially for mental health conditions. The study draws on 175,394 asylum decisions issued by the Swedish Migration Agency in 2016, 2018, and 2020, selecting cases (N = 1021) referring to medical certificates concerning post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Using a coding scheme, three researchers coded decision texts. The codes were use

Evidence for nephrolithiasis preceding sarcoidosis diagnosis: findings from a Swedish case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with sarcoidosis have an increased risk for calcium metabolism disturbances, such as hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. Previous studies suggest that nephrolithiasis (stone formation in the renal and ureter, often caused by dysregulated calcium balance) may occur long before sarcoidosis diagnosis and may be an early sign of not-yet-diagnosed sarcoidosis. We hypothesized that a history of nephrolithiasis is associated with future risk of sarcoidosis. METHODS: In this population-based matched case-control study, we included individuals with sarcoidosis and matched general po
