Pituitary apoplexy is characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical features. A quite rare case of painless thyroiditis, hypopituitarism and central diabetes insipidus (DI) followed by pituitary apoplexy was presented. A 61-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital in May, 1986 because of marked general malaise, polydipsia and weight loss which became progressively worse. Four months earlier she had experienced episodes of abrupt onset of severe headache associated with nausea and blurring vision. Physical examinations revealed a fine tremor, dry skin and nervousness. The thyroid gland was no

Four members of a Chinese family who had thyrotoxicosis and periodic paralysis are described. Two of these patients had "hashitoxicosis' (Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis) as evidenced by the presence of thyroid antibodies in addition to elevated thyroxine (T4) levels. The other two patients were not available for testing. The association of the familial occurrence of "hashitoxicosis' and periodic paralysis does not appear to have been reported previously.

Clinical presentation in 2 patients with 46,X,i(Xq)-Karyotype are described. In both cases no mosaicism could be detected. The two patients show the classical features of gonadal dysgenesis: short stature, sexual infantilism and primary amenorrhea due to streak ovaries. Other characteristic somatic manifestations of the Turner syndrome such as webbing of the neck, however, were missing. In one of the two cases a Hashimoto's thyroiditis was present, which has been repeatedly reported before in the literature in cases with 46,X,i(Xq)-karyotype.

Early histological changes in the thyroid gland were examined in 30 patients with juvenile thyrotoxicosis, by means of needle biopsy. Based on the degree of lymphocytic infiltration and degenerative changes in follicular epithelium, results were classified into four groups. A: hyperplastic changes without cellular infiltration (6 patients, 20%); B: hyperplastic changes with areas of focal thyroiditis less than 30% of specimen (10 patients, 33%); C: those with 30 to 60% areas ot thyroiditis (10 patients, 33%); D: almost diffuse thyroiditis (4 patients, 13%). Moderate to severe lymphocytic thyro

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) remains the only curative treatment for many nonmalignant disorders, such as autoimmune disorders, inborn metabolic disorders, hemoglobinopathies, and immunodeficiency disorders. Autoimmune complications (AICs) after HSCT, such as autoimmune cytopenias, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and autoimmune cutaneous manifestations, are still neither well defined nor characterized.
PATIENTS: Between 2000 and 2012, 92 patients (47 males, 45 females) were treated with HSCT in our hospital, 51 with congenital hemoglobinopathies,

IMPORTANCE: The incidence of thyroid disease in children with alopecia areata (AA) has been widely studied with no consensus on whether a true association with AA exists. In addition, screening practices for thyroid dysfunction in children with AA vary widely among clinicians.
OBJECTIVE: To reduce health care costs, eliminate unnecessary testing, and standardize clinical practices, we sought to characterize thyroid function in children with AA to establish guidelines for screening.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A single-site retrospective medical chart review was carried out in an outpa

INTRODUCTION: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), vitiligo, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) frequently co-occur in the same patients, suggesting a shared autoimmune pathogenesis. These conditions are increasingly recognized as components of polyautoimmunity, with overlapping clinical, immunological, and pathogenetic features. Among the proposed common mechanisms, vitamin D deficiency and oxidative stress (OS) have emerged as key contributors. We aimed to explore the shared immunopathogenic pathways linking these conditions, with a focus on the interplay between vitamin D status and redox imb

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a common autoimmune disease, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. Both genetic and environmental risk factors contribute to the development of HT. Recently, viral infection has been suggested to act as a trigger of HT by eliciting the host immune response and subsequent autoreactivity. We analyzed the features of HT through bioinformatics analysis so as to identify the markers of HT development. We accessed public microarray data of HT patients from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and obtained differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under HT. Gene Ontology

This article prosecutes a case against the zoonotic pathogen Mycobacterium avium ss. paratuberculosis (MAP) as a precipitant of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Like the other major neurodegenerative diseases AD is, at its core, a proteinopathy. Aggregated extracellular amyloid protein plaques and intracellular tau protein tangles are the recognized protein pathologies of AD. Autophagy is the cellular housekeeping process that manages protein quality control and recycling, cellular metabolism, and pathogen elimination. Impaired autophagy and cerebral insulin resistance are invariant features of AD. W

CONTEXT: Autoimmune endocrinopathies result from environmental triggers on the genetic background of risk alleles, especially HLA-DR and HLA-DQ with alanine (Ala) in HLA-DQB1 position 57 (Ala57), whereas amino acid Asp57 is protective.
OBJECTIVES: Differentiate the effects of HLA-DQB1 amino acid variants at position 57 in adult patients with isolated endocrinopathies and autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 (APS-2) compared with healthy controls in relation to gender.
SETTING: University Hospital Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany.
PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred seventy-eight patients with APS-2

INTRODUCTION: Lipodystrophies are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases (genetic or acquired) characterized by a partial or generalized deficit of adipose tissue, resulting in less energy storage capacity. They are associated with severe endocrine-metabolic complications with significant morbidity and mortality. In the pathogenesis of the acquired forms, immunological disorders may be involved.
CASE 1: A 13-year-old female was diagnosed with acquired generalized lipodystrophy and observed for suspicion of portal hypertension. She presented with generalized absence of adipose tissue, cervical

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome that requires rapid recognition and treatment. We describe a 19-year-old female patient with a history of Graves' disease who presented with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, severe pancytopenia, and was subsequently diagnosed with EBV-induced HLH. The presence of Graves' disease, an autoimmune thyroid disorder, likely contributed to underlying immune dysregulation, predisposing the patient to an exaggerated immune response when exposed to EBV. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) has remained a vexing and poorly managed autoimmune component of Graves' disease where the tissues surrounding the eye and in the upper face become inflamed and undergo remodeling. This leads to substantial facial disfigurement while in its most severe forms, TAO can threaten eye sight. In this brief paper, I review some of the background investigation that has led to development of teprotumumab as the first and only US FDA approved medical therapy for TAO. This novel treatment was predicated on recognition that the insulin-like growth factor I receptor

Limbic encephalitis (LE) is a neurological syndrome that may present in association with cancer, infection, or as an isolate clinical condition often accompanying autoimmune disorders. Here we have characterized the clinical and laboratory features of two patients presenting with subacute onset, and chronic evolution, of anterograde amnesia and drug-resistant epilepsy associated with thyroid autoimmunity and in absence of tumoral pathology despite long follow-up. Antibodies against onconeural antigens, voltage gated potassium channel and glutamate receptors, which may accompany paraneoplastic

The expression 'autoimmune epithelitis' has been proposed as an alternative for Sjögren's syndrome (SS) based on data pointing out the central role of the epithelial cell in the pathogenesis of the syndrome. Clinically, apart from exocrine glands that are the main target, the epithelial component of the other organs such as kidneys, liver, lungs or thyroid is commonly affected resulting in various extraglandular manifestations. On the other hand, at the molecular and cellular level, the epithelial cell plays a major role in the initiation and perpetuation of the autoimmune lesion. Mechanisms s

The possibility of autoantibodies--other than sperm antibodies--developing as a consequence of vasectomy has been investigated in 255 volunteers. During the first year after vasectomy no obvious increase was observed in the occurrence of any of these antibodies (rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies and antibodies against smooth muscle, mitochondria, gastric parietal cell, thyroid microsomes and thyroglobulin). Ninety-nine of the patients were also examined for agglutinating and immunofluorescent antibodies to sperm to see if there was any relationship between the occurrence of anti-sperm
