A retrospective case note review was undertaken to assess the clinical significance of hepatic dysfunction with jaundice in typhoid fever. Of the 57 patients, 21 (36.8%) had jaundice, while 36 (63.2%) did not have jaundice. Significantly higher proportions of jaundiced patients were females (P = 0.04). Autoimmune-related and hepatitis C virus-related chronic hepatitis are sometimes difficult to differentiate. All blood donors in Scotland who were found to be infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the first 6 months of routine testing of all donations for anti-HCV were contacted. We followed up a group of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis who participated in a 4-yr prospective, double-blind controlled trial of colchicine therapy for 4 additional years. All were placed on open label colchicine (0.6 mg twice daily) after the trial was concluded. Five patients with chronic hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection suffered spontaneous episodes of liver enzyme elevation on a background of otherwise biochemically stable liver disease. In all five patients these episodes were accompanied by a rise in serum levels of anti-HDV IgM, HDV antigen and HDV RNA. These episodes of increased HDV replication accompanied by biochemical evidence of liver injury are reminiscent of reactivation in chronic hepatitis B. Surges of increased HDV replication may be important in the progression of liver disease in chronic HDV infection.

The effects of high fat diet and injection of chlorpromazine on bile lipid secretion were studied in the rats fed a control diet (C), a saturated fat, high cholesterol diet (S) and a polyunsaturated fat, high cholesterol diet (PU).
