INTRODUCTION: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a musculoskeletal disorder in which ligaments and entheses slowly become ossified, leading to decreased mobility and pain. The prevalence is variably reported as between 3% and 25% of the population over 50. In Australasia, the prevalence and severity of DISH has long been thought by radiologists to be high in certain populations, particularly among Pacific Islanders. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence and severity of DISH in a Pacific Islander community.
METHODS: Chest radiographs in 459 individuals were

3-M syndrome (OMIM #273750, #612921, and #614205) is a rare autosomal recessive growth disorder that is characterized by pre- and postnatal growth retardation, normal intelligence, and characteristic faces. This syndrome also has characteristic radiological features, such as slender long bones and tall vertebral bodies. Three genes, cullin 7 (CUL7), coiled-coil domain containing 8, and obscurin-like 1 are genetic candidates of 3-M syndrome. Patients with 3-M syndrome have a characteristic facial appearance, including a triangular face, frontal bossing, an anteverted nose, dolichocephaly, and a

We evaluated the anatomical considerations specific to the high anterior retropharyngeal approach to the cervical spine. Surgical exposure of the anterior upper cervical spine can sometimes be challenging due to the surrounding neurovascular structures. Using three adult cadavers, we performed high anterior retropharyngeal cervical dissection of the left and right side for a total of six approaches (six sides). During the dissection, all important neurovascular elements were noted and photographed, and anatomical relationships to the spinal vertebral bodies and disc spaces were analyzed. There

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC) is a group of rare inherited chondrodysplasias characterized by short stature, abnormal epiphyses, and flattened vertebral bodies. SEDC is usually caused by substitution of glycine residue with another amino acid in the triple helical domains of alpha 1 chains, which consist of type II collagen (COL2A1). Herein, we describe a unique case of SEDC with mild coxa vara (SEDC-M) caused by double de novo COL2A1 mutations located on the same allele. One mutation, p.G504S, was previously described in patients with SEDC, whereas the other, p.G612A, was a no

We report an unusual case of a 70-year-old male with history of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) and secondary paraspinal extramedullary hematopoiesis with a concurrent follicular lymphoma. The lesion presented as a thoracic paraspinal mass of 9 cm, extending longitudinally between T6 and T9 vertebral bodies. Incisional biopsy revealed that this mass included mature hematopoietic tissue compatible with extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). The tissue also presented an extensive and diffuse infiltration by an atypical lymphoid population composed predominantly by small cells. The immunohistochemical

Spinal tuberculosis is the most common cause of severe kyphosis in many parts of the world. Three percent of patients treated conservatively end up with a deformity greater than 60 degrees which can cause serious cosmetic, psychological, cardio-respiratory and neurological problems. Severe kyphotic deformities are usually the result of childhood spinal deformities and 'Spine at risk' radiological signs are helpful to identify children at risk of deformity. In children, a severe type of collapse, termed as 'Buckling Collapse' is also noted where the kyphosis is more than 120 degrees. Risk facto

Musculoskeletal involvement by TB is rare in comparison to other forms of the disease. It most commonly involves the spine but can also involve large weight-bearing joints, long bones, the skull and the soft tissues. Characteristic appearances of musculoskeletal TB are described for numerous imaging modalities in this paper but it is also highlighted that when based on imaging appearances alone, there is always a differential diagnosis, including other infections and malignancies. Awareness of of TB as a possible cause of vertebral body lesions, arthritis and synovitis, long bone lesions and s…

3MC syndrome has been proposed as a unifying term encompassing the overlapping Carnevale, Mingarelli, Malpuech and Michels syndromes. These rare autosomal recessive disorders exhibit a spectrum of developmental features, including characteristic facial dysmorphism, cleft lip and/or palate, craniosynostosis, learning disability and genital, limb and vesicorenal anomalies. Here we studied 11 families with 3MC syndrome and identified two mutated genes, COLEC11 and MASP1, both of which encode proteins in the lectin complement pathway (collectin kidney 1 (CL-K1) and MASP-1 and MASP-3, respectively)

The aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the lumbar spine is an infrequent entity, of undefined nature and aggressive behavior; there are only a few reports in Mexico, so we present the case of a patient with radicular and lumbar pain that progressed to pelvic limb paresthesia. Lesions in the vertebral body of L1 were located with imaging studies and confirmed with biopsy; treatment with corticosteroids was started and later resection of the lesion was performed together with stabilization of the spine using first a posterior approach and at a second stage an anterior approach. Corticosteroid therapy…

The differences among the vertebrate beta isotypes of tubulin are highly conserved in evolution, suggesting that they have functional significance. To address this, we have used differentiating neuroblastoma cells as a model system. These cells express the betaI, betaII, and betaIII isotypes. Although there is no difference prior to differentiation, a striking difference is seen after differentiation. Both betaI and betaIII occur in cell bodies and neurites, while betaII occurs mostly in neurites. Knocking down betaI causes a large decrease in cell viability while silencing betaII and betaIII

We describe a rare case of an arteriosclerotic aneurysm in the right-sided descending thoracic aorta with a left-sided aortic arch and concomitant aberrant right subclavian artery. A 76-year-old woman, who was found to have an aneurysm of the right-sided descending thoracic aorta, was referred to our hospital for surgical treatment. Contrast computed tomography scan revealed a left-sided aortic arch with an aberrant right subclavian artery, a descending thoracic aorta passing downward behind the esophagus, and an aneurysm of the right-sided and distal (level between the 8th and 10th vertebral

A new nematode species, Paracapillaroides acanthocotylus sp. n., is described from the marine fish Nemadactylus bergi (Norman) (Latridae, Perciformes) from waters off Mar del Plata, Argentina (38 degrees 08'S, 57 degrees 32'W) (prevalence 81.8%, mean intensity 12.4 +/- 10.3). The new species is readily distinguished from P. agonostomi Moravec, Salgado-Maldonado et Caspeta-Mandujano, 1999, the only known species of the genus, by having in both sexes a longer oesophagus in relation to total body length. Males of the new species have a shorter and more complex spicule and a markedly different mor

The pharyngeal (branchial) region represents a classic example where the relationship between ontogenesis and phylogenesis has been demonstrated. It is a region where the development of gills during ontogenesis of all chordates has been recapitulated. In the process of evolution the pharyngeal region has undergone marked changes. While it functioned to ensure blood oxygenation and regulation of a constant internal environment in aquatic animals, it had to adapt to new and more complex functions in terrestrial vertebrates. The lungs have taken on the main role of blood oxygenation and the saliv

The malaria parasite Plasmodium has an absolute requirement for both a vertebrate and a mosquito host in order to complete its life cycle, and its interactions with the latter provide the focus for this review. The mosquito midgut represents one of the most challenging environments for the survival and development of Plasmodium, and is thus also one of the most attractive sites for novel targeted malaria control strategies. During their attempts to cross the midgut epithelium en route to the salivary glands, motile ookinetes are swiftly detected and labelled by mosquito recognition factors and

Vertebrate retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells are derived from the multipotent optic neuroepithelium, develop in close proximity to the retina, and are indispensible for eye organogenesis and vision. Recent advances in our understanding of RPE development provide evidence for how critical signaling factors operating in dorso-ventral and distal-proximal gradients interact with key transcription factors to specify three distinct domains in the budding optic neuroepithelium: the distal future retina, the proximal future optic stalk/optic nerve, and the dorsal future RPE. Concomitantly with do

The polarisation of ciliary bundles on the macula of the saccule in the European bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L) has been studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). These data show that D. labrax possesses ciliary bundles arranged in four dichotomous quadrants with a standard orientation, comparable to hearing generalists from the order Perciformes. The spacing between ciliary bundles was investigated in three size classes of fish, with the results indicating that the addition of receptor cells in the ear of D. labrax continues for at least the first 2 years of development. The lengths

The Kasabach-Merritt syndrome of consumptive coagulopathy associated with massive hemangiomas is a potentially life-threatening problem in patients with a pathologic fracture of the osseous lesion. This can result in massive bleeding even after minor trauma. In such patients, operative management of long bone hemangiomatous lesions, including percutaneous needle aspirations, may be contraindicated, and nonoperative management may be preferable. Kasabach-Merritt syndrome must be suspected in patients with large hemangiomas with associated bone lesions, and appropriate coagulation studies should

HOX genes encode a family of transcription factors of fundamental importance for body patterning during embryonic development. Humans, like most vertebrates, have 39 HOX genes organized into four clusters, with major roles in the development of the central nervous system, axial skeleton, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts, external genitalia, and limbs. The first two limb malformations shown to be caused by mutations in the human HOX genes were synpolydactyly and hand-foot-genital syndrome, which result from mutations in HOXD13 and HOXA13, respectively. This review describes a variety of l

The procedure percutaneous vertebroplasty consists of injecting polymethylmethacrylate cement into vertebral bodies for the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures and tumors of the spine. Clinicians practicing vertebroplasty commonly alter the mixture of monomer-to-powder recommended by the manufacturer in an effort to decrease viscosity and increase the working time. The purpose of the current study was to measure the effect of varying the monomer-to-powder ratio on the compressive material properties (compressive modulus, yield stress, and ultimate compressive strength) of the cemen
