Temporary and Permanent Auditory Effects Associated with Occupational Coexposure to Low Levels of Noise and Solvents.

This study aimed to assess temporary and permanent auditory effects associated with occupational coexposure to low levels of noise and solvents. Cross-sectional study with 25 printing industry workers simultaneously exposed to low noise (<80 dBA TWA) and low levels of solvents. The control group consisted of 29 industry workers without the selected exposures. Participants answered a questionnaire and underwent auditory tests. Auditory fatigue was measured by comparing the acoustic reflex threshold before and after the workday. Workers coexposed to solvents and noise showed significantly worse

An intermediate crocodylian linking two extant gharials from the Bronze Age of China and its human-induced extinction.

A solid phylogenetic framework is the basis of biological studies, yet higher level relationships are still unresolved in some major vertebrate lineages. One such group is Crocodylia, where the branching pattern of three major families (Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae and Gavialidae) has been disputed over decades due to the uncertain relationship of two slender-snouted lineages, gavialines and tomistomines. Here, we report a bizarre crocodylian from the Bronze Age of China, which shows a mosaic of gavialine and tomistomine features across the skeleton, rendering support to their sister taxon rela

Review of methods for conducting speech research with minimally verbal individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

The purpose of this paper was to review best-practice methods of collecting and analyzing speech production data from minimally verbal autistic speakers. Data on speech production data in minimally verbal individuals are valuable for a variety of purposes, including phenotyping, clinical assessment, and treatment monitoring. Both perceptual ("by ear") and acoustic analyses of speech can reveal subtle improvements as a result of therapy that may not be apparent when correct/incorrect judgments are used. Key considerations for collecting and analyzing speech production data from this population

Smartphone Allows Capture of Speech Abnormalities Associated With High Risk of Developing Parkinson's Disease.

Although smartphone technology provides new opportunities for the recording of speech samples in everyday life, its ability to capture prodromal speech impairment in persons with a high risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD) has never been investigated. Speech data were acquired through a smartphone as well as a professional microphone with a linear frequency response from 50 participants with a rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder that are at a high risk of developing PD and related neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, recordings of 30 newly diagnosed, untreated PD patients a

Objective Indices of Perceived Vocal Strain.

BACKGROUND: A limited number of experiments have investigated the perception of strain compared to the voice qualities of breathiness and roughness despite its widespread occurrence in patients who have hyperfunctional voice disorders, adductor spasmodic dysphonia, and vocal fold paralysis among others. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptual basis of strain through identification and exploration of acoustic and psychoacoustic measures. METHODS: Twelve listeners evaluated the degree of strain for 28 dysphonic phonation samples on a five-point rating scale task. Co

Attenuating the ear canal feedback pressure of a laser-driven hearing aid.

Microphone placement behind the pinna, which minimizes feedback but also reduces perception of the high-frequency pinna cues needed for sound localization, is one reason why hearing-aid users often complain of poor sound quality and difficulty understanding speech in noisy situations. In this paper, two strategies are investigated for minimizing the feedback pressure (thereby increasing the maximum stable gain, MSG) of a wide-bandwidth light-activated contact hearing aid (CHA) to facilitate microphone placement in the ear canal (EC): (1) changing the location of the drive force and its directi

[Relationship between Coronary Plaque Stability Evaluated by Intravascular Ultrasound and Laboratory Parameters].

Tissue characteristics of coronary plaque have been reported to be associated with cardiovascular events. The stabilization of vulnerable tissue components such as the lipid pool rather than regression of the plaque volume is considered to be of major benefit in the reduction of cardiovascular events. Conventional echocardiography, especially intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS), is widely used to determine calcification and the three layers of the arterial wall. However, differentiation of the lipid pool from fibrous tissue using the echo intensity is difficult. Recently, an integrated bac

Neurofibromatosis Type 2 Presenting with Oculomotor Ophthalmoplegia and Distal Myopathy.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 usually presents with bilateral acoustic schwannomas. We highlight the rare presentation of neurofibromatosis initially involving third nerve. A 23-year-old Malay female presented with left eye drooping of the upper lid and limitation of upward movement for 8 years. It was associated with right-sided body weakness, change in voice, and hearing disturbance in the right ear for the past 2 years. On examination, there was mild ptosis and limitation of movement superiorly in the left eye. Both eyes had posterior subcapsular cataract. Fundoscopy showed generalised optic dis

Laterality of repetitive finger movement performance and clinical features of Parkinson's disease.

Impairments in acoustically cued repetitive finger movement often emerge at rates near to and above 2Hz in persons with Parkinson's Disease (PD) in which some patients move faster (hastening) and others move slower (bradykinetic). The clinical features impacting this differential performance of repetitive finger movement remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare repetitive finger movement performance between the more and less affected side, and the difference in clinical ratings among performance groups. Forty-one participants diagnosed with idiopathic PD completed an acoustical

Changes in Oral Vowel Sounds and Hyoid Bone Movement After Thyroidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Voice and speech alterations after total thyroidectomy may be associated with other extralaryngeal factors, such as neck muscle dysfunction and neck scar contracture. We evaluated the acoustic characteristics of oral vowel sounds and changes in hyoid bone movement before and after thyroidectomy. METHODS: Twenty-nine female patients undergoing total thyroidectomy were included. Fundamental frequencies (Fo), formants and vowel space areas were evaluated before surgery and 7 days and 3 months after surgery to acoustically analyze the oral vowel sounds. Videofluoroscopic images were t

Nasal air-conditioning after partial turbinectomy: myths versus facts.

BACKGROUND: Turbinectomy, although a common procedure, is often accused of having a negative impact in all nasal functions. This study is the first in vivo study that evaluates objectively the effect of partial turbinectomy on nasal air-conditioning capacity. METHODS: In total, 57 patients with prior partial inferior turbinectomy and 28 healthy controls were examined. Intranasal temperature and humidity values were measured at the level of the head of inferior and middle turbinate. Nasal patency was evaluated by means of acoustic rhinometry. The clinical assessment was completed with nasal en

Automated detection of Antarctic blue whale calls.

This paper addresses the problem of automated detection of Z-calls emitted by Antarctic blue whales (B. m. intermedia). The proposed solution is based on a subspace detector of sigmoidal-frequency signals with unknown time-varying amplitude. This detection strategy takes into account frequency variations of blue whale calls as well as the presence of other transient sounds that can interfere with Z-calls (such as airguns or other whale calls). The proposed method has been tested on more than 105 h of acoustic data containing about 2200 Z-calls (as found by an experienced human operator). This

Intracordal auricular cartilage injection for unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

We evaluated the efficacy and outcome of intracordal auricular cartilage injection in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Our interest developed from findings of a canine model study that reported that histologic characteristics of cartilage were preserved 2 and 3 years after intracordal autologous cartilage injection. Between May 2002 and July 2010, 29 patients with breathy dysphonia caused by unilateral vocal fold paralysis underwent intracordal auricular cartilage injection. Each subject underwent preoperative and postoperative perceptual assessments, acoustical voice analysis, a

Voice identity discrimination and hallucination-proneness in healthy young adults: a further challenge to the continuum model of psychosis?

INTRODUCTION: Auditory hallucinations occur in schizophrenia and also in the general population. However, evidence points to differences in the nature and the mechanisms of clinical and non-clinical hallucinations, challenging the dominant assumption that they represent the same phenomenon. The current study extended this evidence by examining voice identity perception in hallucination-prone individuals. In schizophrenia, deficiencies discriminating between real (external) voices have been linked to basic acoustic cues, but voice discrimination has not yet been investigated in non-clinical hal

WDR1 expression in normal and noise-damaged Sprague-Dawley rat cochleae.

WD40 repeat protein 1 (WDR1) has been suggested as a protective mechanism or a sign of regeneration in avian cochlea. However, its role in mammalian cochlea has yet to be determined. Hence, we investigated WDR1 expression in sound-overstimulated Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were divided into three groups (the permanent and temporary threshold shift [PTS and TTS] groups and the control group) according to the extent of noise exposure and euthanized immediately, 3, or 7 days after noise exposure for cochlear harvest. Immunocytochemistry localized WDR1 to outer hair cells, Deiter's cells, outer sulc

The relationship between MOC reflex and masked threshold.

Otoacoustic emission (OAE) amplitude can be reduced by acoustic stimulation. This effect is produced by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex. Past studies have shown that the MOC reflex is related to listening in noise and attention. In the present study, the relationship between strength of the contralateral MOC reflex and masked threshold was investigated in 19 adults. Detection thresholds were determined for 1000-Hz, 300-ms tone presented simultaneously with one repetition of a 300-ms masker in an ongoing train of masker bursts. Three masking conditions were tested: 1) broadband noise 2) a
