Longitudinal maternal hemodynamics from late pregnancy to postpartum in uncomplicated twin pregnancies-A glimpse into long-term cardiovascular risk?

INTRODUCTION: Twin pregnancies impose greater cardiovascular demands than singleton gestations, potentially increasing long-term cardiovascular risk even in the absence of hypertensive disorders. Nevertheless, longitudinal assessments of maternal hemodynamics in uncomplicated twin pregnancies remain limited, and most available studies focus solely on the antenatal period. Chorionicity has been shown to markedly influence cardiovascular adaptation during twin gestation. This study aimed to investigate whether distinct hemodynamic adaptations occur in twin compared with singleton pregnancies dur

Domestic pig prioritized in one health action against fascioliasis in human endemic areas: Experimental assessment of transmission capacity and epidemiological evaluation of reservoir role.

The Northern Bolivian Altiplano is the human fascioliasis hyperendemic area where the highest prevalences and intensities in humans have been reported. Preventive chemotherapy was implemented in the last ten years. Surveillance showed high human infection and re-infection rates in between the annual triclabendazole monodose treatments. A complementary One Health control action was launched to decrease the infection risk. Among the multidisciplinary axes, there is the need to establish animal reservoir species priorities for a more efficient control. Laboratory and field studies were performed

Effect of fatigue loading and associated matrix microdamage on bone blood flow and interstitial fluid flow.

Functional adaptation of bone to cyclic fatigue involves a complex physiological response that is targeted to sites of microdamage. The mechanisms that regulate this process are not understood, although lacunocanalicular interstitial fluid flow is likely important. We investigated the effect of a single period of cyclic fatigue on bone blood flow and interstitial fluid flow. The ulnae of 69 rats were subjected to cyclic fatigue unilaterally using an initial peak strain of -6000 muepsilon until 40% loss of stiffness developed. Groups of rats (n=23 per group) were euthanized immediately after lo

Can Resistance Training-Induced Skeletal Muscle Growth Improve Local Muscular Endurance?

Skeletal muscle growth occurs in response to training with a wide range of loads, despite traditionally being linked to high-load resistance training and maximal strength development. A body of literature suggests that with lower loads, training near fatigue/task failure is an important stimulus for muscle growth. We consider that training-induced adaptations often improve performance in the specific activity that stimulated them (e.g., increased cardiac output and endurance exercise). Accordingly, we explore skeletal muscle growth as a compensatory adaptation to intense fatiguing exercise, po

Adaptive versus conventional deep brain stimulation for bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease: a comparative effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional deep brain stimulation (cDBS) is an established treatment for motor complications in Parkinson's disease, whereas adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) adjusts stimulation in response to physiological or behavioral feedback. This review examines whether aDBS provides clinically meaningful advantages over cDBS for bradykinesia and akinesia, while also considering stimulation delivery, adverse effects, and non-motor outcomes. METHODS: A structured narrative review of relevant literature was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, citation tracking, and

Neonatal maternal separation stress elicits lasting DNA methylation changes in the hippocampus of stress-reactive Wistar Kyoto rats.

Early-life stress (ELS) can alter neurodevelopment in variable ways, ranging from producing deleterious outcomes to stress resilience. While most ELS studies focus on its harmful effects, recent work by our laboratory and others shows that ELS elicits positive effects in certain individuals. We exposed Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats, known for a stress reactive, anxiety/depression-like phenotype, to maternal separation (MS), a model of ELS. MS exposure elicited anxiolytic and antidepressant behavioral effects as well as improved cardiovascular function in adult WKY offspring. This study interrogates

The neurobiology of stress: from serendipity to clinical relevance.

The hormones and other physiological agents that mediate the effects of stress on the body have protective and adaptive effects in the short run and yet can accelerate pathophysiology when they are over-produced or mismanaged. Here we consider the protective and damaging effects of these mediators as they relate to the immune system and brain. 'Stress' is a principle focus, but this term is rather imprecise. Therefore, the article begins by noting two new terms, allostasis and allostatic load that are intended to supplement and clarify the meanings of 'stress' and 'homeostasis'. For the immune

Lipid Droplets in Poultry Lipid Metabolism: Characteristics, Regulatory Factors, and Implications for Fatty Liver and Muscle Lipid Deposition.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are dynamic metabolic platforms that integrate neutral-lipid storage, fatty-acid trafficking, organelle communication, cellular energy metabolism, and stress adaptation in poultry cells. Lipid metabolism plays a central role in poultry growth, reproductive function, production performance, meat quality, and metabolic health. Unlike mammals, de novo lipogenesis in poultry occurs predominantly in the liver, making hepatic lipid homeostasis particularly important for maintaining physiological function and production efficiency. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism contributes to

Stress-Driven Tolerance and Persistence of Listeria monocytogenes Across the Farm-to-Fork Continuum.

Food systems expose bacteria to repeated nonlethal stresses during primary production, processing, storage, and sanitation. Depending on the type, intensity, and sequence of exposure, these stresses may weaken cells, act synergistically to promote inactivation, or fail to eliminate contamination. Instead, they can alter bacterial physiology in ways that affect survival, recovery, detection, and responses to control measures. This review examines how stress history contributes to persistent food safety challenges. Listeria monocytogenes is used as a central biological model, with relevant compa

Partial replacement of soybean meal with brown mushroom stem powder: Effects on laying performance, egg quality, and serum biochemical indices of lohmann LSL lite hens.

A total of 120 Lohmann LSL Lite laying hens (34 weeks of age) were used to evaluate the effects of brown mushroom stem (BMS) powder as a partial replacement for soybean meal (SBM) on laying performance, egg quality, egg composition, and serum biochemical parameters. After a 7-d adaptation period, hens were randomly assigned at 35 weeks of age to 1 of 3 dietary treatments: a control diet (0% BMS) and diets in which 10% or 20% of SBM was replaced with BMS. Each treatment had 8 replicates of 5 hens, and the experiment lasted 6 weeks. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with orthogonal polynomi

From environmental perception to reproductive allocation: the microbiome-membrane-mitochondria axis in poultry.

Reproductive performance has traditionally been interpreted through the physiology of reproductive organs, endocrine regulation, and genetics. Although these approaches have substantially advanced poultry production, they do not fully explain why reproduction consistently reflects the overall physiological condition of the organism. This review proposes an integrative conceptual framework in which reproductive success emerges from the coordinated activity of the entire host-microbiome ecosystem, not from the reproductive system alone. We examine current evidence supporting the concept that the

Crosstalk among canonical Wnt and Hippo pathway members in skeletal muscle and at the neuromuscular junction.

Skeletal muscles are essential for locomotion, posture, and metabolic regulation. To understand physiological processes, exercise adaptation, and muscle-related disorders, it is critical to understand the molecular pathways that underlie skeletal muscle function. The process of muscle contraction, orchestrated by a complex interplay of molecular events, is at the core of skeletal muscle function. Muscle contraction is initiated by an action potential and neuromuscular transmission requiring a neuromuscular junction. Within muscle fibers, calcium ions play a critical role in mediating the inter

Effects of Rumen-Protected L-Tryptophan Supplementation on Productivity, Physiological Indicators, Blood Profiles, and Heat Shock Protein Gene Expression in Lactating Holstein Cows under Heat Stress Conditions.

In this study, we examined the effects of rumen-protected L-tryptophan supplementation on the productivity and physiological metabolic indicators in lactating Holstein cows under heat stress conditions. The study involved eight early lactating Holstein cows (days in milk = 40 ± 9 days; milk yield 30 ± 1.5 kg/day; parity 1.09 ± 0.05, p < 0.05), four cows per experiment, with environmentally controlled chambers. In each experiment, two distinct heat stress conditions were created: a low-temperature and low-humidity (LTLH) condition at 25 °C with 35-50% humidity and a high-temperature and high-hu

Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling as a Molecular Target by Pathogenic Bacteria.

The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is crucial to regulate cell proliferation and polarity, cell determination, and tissue homeostasis. The activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling is based on the interaction between Wnt glycoproteins and seven transmembrane receptors-Frizzled (Fzd). This binding promotes recruitment of the scaffolding protein Disheveled (Dvl), which results in the phosphorylation of the co-receptor LRP5/6. The resultant molecular complex Wnt-Fzd-LRP5/6-Dvl forms a structural region for Axin interaction that disrupts Axin-mediated phosphorylation/degradation of the transcriptiona

A novel high-affinity inhibitor against the human ATP-sensitive Kir6.2 channel.

The adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive (KATP) channels in pancreatic β cells couple the blood glucose level to insulin secretion. KATP channels in pancreatic β cells comprise the pore-forming Kir6.2 and the modulatory sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR1) subunits. Currently, there is no high-affinity and relatively specific inhibitor for the Kir6.2 pore. The importance of developing such inhibitors is twofold. First, in many cases, the lack of such an inhibitor precludes an unambiguous determination of the Kir6.2's role in certain physiological and pathological processes. This problem is exacerb

Bilateral giant pulmonary hydatid cysts in a toddler presenting as severe pneumonia: a risk-adapted staged surgical approach.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hydatid disease is common in endemic regions, yet bilateral giant cysts in toddlers are exceptionally rare and may mimic severe pneumonia. Their management is challenging, particularly in physiologically vulnerable children. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 32-month-old girl presenting with fever, progressive cough, and severe respiratory distress. Imaging revealed four large pulmonary hydatid cysts-three in the left lung and one in the right-complicated by superimposed bacterial infection and hypoxemia. Albendazole therapy (15 mg/kg/day) was initiated, and a risk-adapted,

Dietary Microplastics Engage Gut Mechanosensory-Endocrine Signaling to Disrupt Bone Homeostasis.

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive environmental contaminants and an emerging component of the human diet1, 2, yet their physiological effects remain poorly defined. Here we show that MPs are detectable in mineralized human bone under non-iatrogenic conditions and impair osteoblast mineralization in a donor-dependent manner. Using a physiologically relevant dietary exposure model, we demonstrate that chronic MP ingestion induces sex- and diet-dependent bone loss in mice, predominantly affecting trabecular architecture, in the absence of intestinal pathology or systemic inflammatory cytokine ele

A Ratiometric pH Sensor for Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Fluctuating environments can lead to phenotypic heterogeneity within a monoclonal bacterial population, especially in response to antibiotics or the human immune system. Methods are required to analyze the physiology of single cells to understand how individual cells interact with their environment and adapt to pH stress. We report a ratiometric, fluorescent probe to sense cytoplasmic pH in bacteria. Our probes are based on hemicyanine dyes and are taken up into both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The probes are selective under a broad range of biologically relevant conditions. The

Tissue-bioelectronics interfaces.

Wearable and implantable bioelectronics enable continuous physiological monitoring and therapeutic modulation, yet their performance critically depends on the stability and conformality of the interfaces with soft and dynamic biological tissues. Mechanical and biochemical mismatches between conventional electronic materials and living tissues often lead to interfacial stress, unstable contact, and inflammatory responses that compromise the long-term function of bioelectronics. This review presents a mechanism-driven framework for understanding tissue-bioelectronics interfaces by systematically
