The roles of marriage and anger dysregulation in biobehavioral stress responses.

Physiological and behavioral correlates of anger dysregulation in adults were evaluated in the context of marital stress. Fifty-four married couples participated in a series of laboratory procedures that included electrocardiogram measures during a 15-min marital conflict interaction and an interview assessing their inability to regulate anger (anger dysregulation). Results from the multivariate regression analyses indicated that the nature of the couple's relationship, rather than individual levels of anger dysregulation, predicted lower parasympathetic cardiac activity (indexed by high-frequ

Responders and nonresponders to autogenic training and cognitive self-hypnosis: prediction of short- and long-term success in tension-type headache patients.

The present study was conducted to determine whether demographic variables, medical status variables, and psychological measures at pretreatment were related to pain reduction immediately following behavioral treatment for headache and at a 6-month follow-up. The study sample consisted of 156 subjects, who were selected for participation in a behavioral outcome study on the efficacy of autogenic training and cognitive self-hypnosis training. A Headache Index based on pain diaries constituted the main outcome measure. Psychological measures included the Symptom Checklist-90, Dutch Personality Q

Psychological factors in recurrent genital herpes infection: stress, coping style, social support, emotional dysfunction, and symptom recurrence.

The relationship among stress, coping style, emotional dysfunction, social support, and severity of symptoms (frequency of recurrence, and pain, duration, and bother of recurrences) was investigated in 35 females and 32 males suffering from severe cases of genital herpes infection. Level of emotional dysfunction as measured by the SCL-90 approached two standard deviations above the mean as compared with non-patient normals, and frequency, pain, and bother of recurrences were associated with level of emotional dysfunction. Negative life stress (as measured by the Life Experiences Survey) was un

Hippocampal neurogenesis and behavioural studies on adult ischemic rat response to chronic mild stress.

Stress and antidepressants have been shown to influence hippocampal neurogenesis, which is hypothesized to be an etiological factor of depression. Robust ischemia-stimulated neurogenesis implies the existence of an innate response and rehabilitation mechanism to injury repair, i.e. cognitive recovery. We investigated whether unpredictable chronic mild stress (CMS) influences ischemia-stimulated compensatory neurogenesis in the hippocampus and also studied the therapeutic effect of citalopram. Adult rats were exposed to the CMS paradigm after left middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The op

Psychological resilience moderates the association between adverse academic events and probable anxiety disorder in Chinese clinical medicine postgraduates: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical medicine postgraduates face a heightened risk for mental health problems, particularly anxiety disorder, which is largely due to a high-pressure training environment and prevalent adverse academic events. Psychological resilience, defined as the ability to adapt to adversity, is theorized to modify the association of external stressors with mental health problems. However, limited evidence exists regarding its moderating role in this specific population, particularly using rigorous interaction analysis. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1182 clinical medicine postgr

Infertility in resource-constrained settings: moving towards amelioration.

It is often presumed that infertility is not a problem in resource-poor areas where fertility rates are high. This is challenged by consistent evidence that the consequences of childlessness are very severe in low-income countries, particularly for women. In these settings, childless women are frequently stigmatized, isolated, ostracized, disinherited and neglected by the family and local community. This may result in physical and psychological abuse, polygamy and even suicide. Attitudes among people in high-income countries towards provision of infertility care in low-income countries have mo

"Don't tell me I'm going to feel joy": The emotional burden of informal caregivers of patients with a fragility fracture discharged from a rehabilitation hospital.

UNLABELLED: The emotional experience of informal caregiving is considerable and complex, consisting of tensions internally and with the care recipient, and exacerbated by pressures to adopt the caregiver role without complaint or assistance. Our findings demonstrate the need to develop policies to relieve distress for caregivers of fragility fracture patients. PURPOSE: Informal caregiving can have considerable physical and psychosocial consequences, with the emotional strain of caregiving considered most distressing. Few studies have examined the emotional experience of caregiving for individ

[Resilience in the intensive care team: its significance, determinants, and strategies for enhancement].

Resilience in the intensive care context describes the ability both of an individual and on a team level to cope adaptively with stressors while maintaining mental health and performance. Despite definitional inconsistency in current scientific discourse, in general, resilience is understood either as a personality trait or as a dynamic process that is shaped by individual resources such as self-efficacy and self-regulation, proactive team strategies as well as supportive leadership and organizational structures. To promote individual and team resilience, training based on established behavior

Codesigning an Online Psychotherapeutic Intervention for Carers of People With Cancer-A Qualitative Study of Carer Needs and Perspectives on Psychological Support.

BACKGROUND: Caring for a person with cancer can be a physically and emotionally demanding role, with cancer carers experiencing disproportionately high rates of depression and anxiety. Existing psychosocial interventions for carers are limited by minimal carer input during development and underutilisation of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. AIMS: The purpose of this qualitative study was to inform the modification of an established online CBT (iCBT) intervention for cancer patients to be carer centred. METHODS: Using the Person-Based Co-Design Approach, semi-structured, think-

Resource access and use: Impacts on distal minority stressors for racial and sexual diverse youth in rural and urban contexts.

Sexually and racially diverse (SD) adolescents experience elevated proximal and distal minority stressors that vary across school, community, and policy contexts. Limited research has examined how access to and use of LGBTQIA+ supportive structures, such as Gender and Sexualities Alliances (GSAs), LGBTQIA+ community centers, and affirming school staff, shape distal minority stress for racially and sexually diverse youth across geographic settings. Using cross-sectional national sample data of SD adolescents from the Adolescent Stress Experiences Over Time Study (ASETS; N = 1076), this study ap

Family resilience and its related factors among parents of children with congenital heart disease in China: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) face chronic stress impairing family functioning and well-being. As a key protective factor, family resilience aids their adaptation. However, existing research predominantly measures general family resilience, neglecting heterogeneous resilience patterns and subgroup profiles. Our study uses person-centered Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify latent family resilience classes in Chinese culture to provide tailored support. METHODS: This study adopted a cross-sectional survey design. From October 2024 to July 2025, conven

Predictors of Resilience Among Patients Living With Heart Failure Amid Escalating Sociopolitical Challenges: A Cross-Sectional Approach.

AIM: Exposure to chronic illness and prolonged sociopolitical adversity may shape how patients adapt to illness-related demands; however, this relationship should be interpreted cautiously because stress can both challenge and undermine adaptive capacity. This study aimed to assess resilience and identify demographic, clinical, psychosocial, and self-care correlates of resilience among patients living with heart failure in Lebanon. DESIGN: A quantitative cross-sectional observational study. METHODS: Arabic-translated and psychometrically tested instruments were used to assess depressive symp

Racial Stress, Social Support, and Racial Socialization Among Rural Black Mothers: Associations With Preschoolers' Executive Functioning.

Racial stress significantly affects Black mothers and their children. To cope, mothers often use racial socialization strategies, such as preparation for bias, cultural socialization, and promotion of mistrust, to help their children manage race-related stress. Guided by the Racial Encounter Coping Appraisal and Socialization Theory, this study investigated the relations among racial stress, social support, and racial socialization among low-income, rural Black mothers and their associations with preschoolers' executive functioning. The study utilized data from 437 Black mothers and their pres

Beyond Hardships: Resilience, Opportunities and Positive Experiences of Older Informal Caregivers in Aotearoa New Zealand During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare and social services, increasing pressure on informal caregivers who provided essential, unpaid care to family members, partners, friends, and neighbors. While much of the existing research emphasizes the challenges and burdens of informal caregiving, this descriptive qualitative study highlights the resilience, opportunities, and positive experiences of older informal caregivers in Aotearoa New Zealand. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 81 older informal caregivers aged 57-88, recruited from across Aotearoa New Zealand, this study explores how parti

Seeking support or concealing? A longitudinal study of adolescents' friendships, peer victimization, depression, and coping with peer relationship stressors.

Friends are often a source of emotional and informational support, which suggests that friends can directly assist adolescents to more effectively cope with stressful experiences, reducing emotional distress. In this longitudinal study, we examined the direct impact of friendship on adolescents' use of help seeking, comfort seeking, concealment, and rumination to cope with peer stressors. We used path modeling with two waves of data to consider the unique roles of friendship quality and coping on change in peer victimization (both overt and relational/reputational) and depression over time.
