INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the best way to engage an adolescent oncology patient in decision-making. To integrate adolescent oncology patients most effectively in decision-making, it is important to understand their perceptions not only as adolescents but also as adult survivors who have had time to reflect upon their experience. The purpose of this study is to explore perceptions of survivors of pediatric cancer to better understand their attitudes toward participation in decision-making, decisional regret, and use of decision-support tools.
METHODS: An electronic survey tool, conta

INTRODUCTION: Catatonia is a syndrome characterized by psychomotor and behavioral disturbances and is associated with a substantially increased mortality risk in adolescent patients. There is a dearth of published literature describing treatment strategies for pediatric patients with catatonia. This dual-case series will describe the treatment course of 2 adolescent patients with catatonia at our pediatric inpatient psychiatric facility.
CASE SERIES: This case series presents 2 adolescent patients (a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old female) who initially presented with worsening agitation a

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the spinopelvic alignment of a cohort of young ambulatory individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and compare it to published spinopelvic alignment data for the typically developing adolescents.
METHODS: Thirty-seven adolescents (18 females) with CP at GMFCS I-III were included in this retrospective case series. Lumbar lordosis and pelvic incidence were measured, and their mismatch was calculated. A model that calculates predicted lumbar lordosis based on pelvic incidence in normative data was utilized to calculate a predicted lumbar lordosis in this cohort

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) represents the most common inflammatory neurological disease causing disability in early adulthood. Childhood and adolescence factors might be of relevance in the development of MS. We aimed to investigate the association between various factors (e.g., prematurity, breastfeeding, daycare attendance, weight history) and MS risk.
METHODS: Data from the baseline assessment of the German National Cohort (NAKO) were used to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between childhood and adolescence factors and ri

BACKGROUND: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus T1DM is a chronic disease, mainly observed in children or young adults, with a significantly increased incidence in young children. To enable diabetic children and adolescents to lead a healthy life and manage their disease effectively, right from diagnosis, they must benefit from therapeutic patient education TPE whose first stage is an educational diagnosis. This study aimed to identify the educational needs of T1DM children and adolescents through an educational diagnosis.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: A qualitative study was conducted with T1DM children and ad

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of myopia is increasing, with a significant proportion of affected young individuals, particularly in countries and cities with relatively developed education in the Asia-Pacific region. This trend highlights the need for effective interventions to address the rising prevalence of myopia in adolescents.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of orthokeratology lenses in the management of adolescent myopia through a comprehensive meta-analysis.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in four databases to identify

Adolescence is characterised by a peak in sensation seeking accompanied by gradually developing self-control skills. Adolescents typically show steeper delay discounting performance than other age groups; a feature that is transdiagnostically related to a variety of mental health disorders. However, delay discounting performance is not a singular mental process but involves both risk/reward and future orientation elements, usually operationalised as probability/risk and time discounting tasks, respectively. To clarify the specific relations between the risk/reward and future orientation elemen

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents commonly experience both fear of negative evaluation and weight/shape concerns. However, evidence concerning the prospective associations between these constructs during adolescence is limited. The current study examined the bidirectional relationships between fear of negative evaluation and weight/shape concerns over a 3-year period in adolescents.
METHOD: Australian high school students (n = 2073; 55% girls) completed self-report measures at three timepoints, each 1 year apart.
RESULTS: Findings showed a bidirectional relationship, whereby increases in fear of negati

Despite widespread evidence suggesting that e-cigarettes are harmful to youth, the prevalence of adolescent vaping continues to rise. The first aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine which methods adolescents have previously used to quit vaping and their interest in using various methods to quit vaping in the future. The second aim was to investigate the associations between vaping-related characteristics and (1) motivation to quit vaping and (2) previous use of pharmacological methods to quit vaping or previous use of unassisted quitting. Participants were 185 current or former va

BACKGROUND: Risk-taking behaviours are a major contributor to youth morbidity and mortality. Vulnerability to these negative outcomes is constructed from individual behaviour including risk-taking, and from social context, ecological determinants, early life experience, developmental capacity and mental health, contributing to a state of higher risk. However, although risk-taking is part of normal adolescent development, there is no systematic way to distinguish young people with a high probability of serious adverse outcomes, hindering the capacity to screen and intervene. This study aims to …

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of depressive symptoms reported by adolescents and associated risk of experiencing psychiatric disorders as adults, differentiating the trajectories of the symptoms related to negative valence at an individual level could be crucial in gaining a better understanding of their effects later in life.
METHODS: A longitudinal deep learning framework is presented, identifying self-reported and behavioral measurements that detect the depressive symptoms associated with the Negative Valence System domain of the NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC).

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders with overactivity, inattention, and impulsivity as core characteristics. Recent studies suggest that 20 % of children with ADHD also develop eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. However, little is still known about the association between ADHD and EDs through childhood and adolescence. Therefore, in the present work, we aimed at summarizing the studies investigating ADHD and EDs in childhood and adolescence over the last

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents and youth constitute a significant proportion of the population in developing nations. Conventional survey methods risk missing adolescents/youth because their family planning/contraception (FP/C) behavior is hidden. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS), a modified chain-referral recruitment sampling approach, was used to reach unmarried adolescents/youth aged 15-24 in Nairobi, Kenya to measure key FP/C indicators. Seeds were selected and issued with three coupons which they used to invite their peers, male or female, to participate in the study. Referred participants were a

Lockdown, isolation, quarantine and social distancing are proved to be only effective measures to prevent and tackle COVID-19 till date. Unfortunately, these measures have caused physical, economical and mental health problems. Children and adolescents are not immune to the adverse mental health effect due to the new changes. Research around the globe shows children and adolescents are suffering from an increased number of depressive symptoms, clinginess, inattention, irritability and worry. This cross-sectional online-based survey type study was aimed to get a snapshot of the prevalence of pr

Neuropsychological evidence supports the developmental taxonomy theory of antisocial behavior, suggesting that abnormal brain development distinguishes life-course-persistent from adolescence-limited antisocial behavior. Recent neuroimaging work confirmed that prospectively-measured life-course-persistent antisocial behavior is associated with differences in cortical brain structure. Whether this extends to subcortical brain structures remains uninvestigated. This study compared subcortical gray-matter volumes between 672 members of the Dunedin Study previously defined as exhibiting life-cours
