Alcohol-related dementia: an update of the evidence.

The characteristics of dementia relating to excessive alcohol use have received increased research interest in recent times. In this paper, the neuropathology, nosology, epidemiology, clinical features, and neuropsychology of alcohol-related dementia (ARD) and alcohol-induced persisting amnestic syndrome (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, or WKS) are reviewed. Neuropathological and imaging studies suggest that excessive and prolonged use of alcohol may lead to structural and functional damage that is permanent in nature; however, there is debate about the relative contributions of the direct toxic

Opportunities for prevention of alcohol-related death in primary care: results from a population-based cross-sectional study.

The mortality rate from alcohol-related conditions has risen sharply in the United Kingdom and it is not known whether opportunities for preventive interventions could be improved. The purpose of our study was to identify opportunities to detect, assess, and manage alcohol problems in primary care according to evidence-based guidelines. We carried out a cross-sectional study on patients who died from alcohol-related conditions in the calendar year 2003 within National Health Service Greater Glasgow Health Board area, Scotland (population 920,000). We described patient characteristics and care

Alcohol consumption analysis among patients with liver disease in China.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption has been observed to be a contributing factor in liver damage. However, very few studies have tried to decipher the correlation between patients with liver disease and alcohol consumption. Therefore, this study was planned to determine the prevalence of alcohol consumption among patients with liver disease, and to evaluate the risk factors, liver diseases, and chronic medical conditions associated with alcohol drinking. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with liver disease in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across…

Effect of maternal ethanol administration on physical growth of the offspring in rats.

To study the effects of maternal alcohol consumption on the postnatal growth and physical development of the offspring, female Sprague-Dawley rats (200-220 g) were assigned to one of 3 groups. Group I (alcohol) received alcohol in drinking water (up to 20% v/v) for at least 4 weeks prior to mating, and 30% (v/v) throughout gestation. Purina Lab Chow was ad libitum. Group II (pair-fed) received the same amount of chow as was consumed by alcohol-fed animals, and an amount of corn starch calorically equivalent to the amount of alcohol consumed. Group III (ad libitum) were given chow and water ad

Effect of dietary stimulation on acute changes in GLP-1, alcohol responses, craving, and attentional bias: a randomized, placebo-controlled laboratory study.

RATIONALE: Preclinical and clinical findings support the potential for GLP-1 receptor activation to reduce alcohol consumption and reward. Human experimental studies are needed to clarify whether acute changes in endogenous GLP-1 influence alcohol craving and responses to alcohol. Dietary stimulation may present a method to study the effects of endogenous GLP-1 on responses to alcohol. OBJECTIVES: Assess the effects of a dietary manipulation on acute changes in GLP-1 and laboratory responses to alcohol. METHODS: Healthy young adult heavy drinkers (N = 40) were recruited to participate in two

Gender, age, and educational level attribute to blood alcohol concentration in hospitalized intoxicated adolescents; a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adolescents hospitalized with acute alcohol intoxication, mainly because of severe reduced consciousness, is increasing. However, the characteristics of these adolescents are mainly unidentified. In this clinical research, we aimed to identify factors that attribute to higher ethanol concentration, on which targeted alcohol health interventions can be designed. METHODS: Since 2007, alcohol intoxication among adolescents has been one of the leading topics of the Dutch Pediatric Surveillance System. In the current study, we have analyzed which demographic character

The role of cortisol in chronic binge alcohol-induced cerebellar injury: Ovine model.

Women who drink alcohol during pregnancy are at high risk of giving birth to children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Previous reports from our laboratory have shown that third trimester equivalent binge alcohol exposure at a dose of 1.75 g/kg/day results in significant fetal cerebellar Purkinje cell loss in fetal sheep and that both maternal and fetal adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol levels are elevated in response to alcohol treatment. In this study, we hypothesized that repeated elevations in cortisol from chronic binge alcohol are responsible at least in part for fetal neuronal d

Debate on Selection Criteria for Liver Transplantation for Alcoholic Hepatitis: Tighten or Loosen?

Although liver transplantation (LT) for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a well-accepted practice, LT for severe alcoholic hepatitis (AH) remains controversial due to concerns about the limited organ supply and the risk of return to harmful drinking. Recognizing an increasing body of favorable evidence, a convergence of practice guideline recommendations from leading hepatology and gastroenterology societies have suggested that the length of abstinence should not be a sole criterion for LT selection and, thus, that LT may be considered in carefully selected severe AH patients with fav

[New protective effect of simvastatin in rats with experimental steatohepatitis].

The intragastric introduction of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) (0.2 ml/kg in 50% oil suspension, twice a week) and ethyl alcohol (5% solution ad libitum as the only available drink) in rats over a period of four weeks results in the development of inflammation, fibrosis, and fatty dystrophy in the liver. Such a fast formation of liver damage is obviously caused by potentiating effect of alcohol in combination with CCl4. Simultaneous injection of simvastatin (1 mg/kg, intragastrically) in rats with ethanol--CCl4 hepatitis decreased fatty dystrophy and produced certain anticytolytic and anticholes

Moderate red wine consumption and cardiovascular disease risk: beyond the "French paradox".

The term FRENCH PARADOX was coined in 1992 to describe the relatively low incidence of cardiovascular disease in the French population, despite a relatively high dietary intake of saturated fats, and potentially attributable to the consumption of red wine. After nearly 20 years, several studies have investigated the fascinating, overwhelmingly positive biological and clinical associations of red wine consumption with cardiovascular disease and mortality. Light to moderate intake of red wine produces a kaleidoscope of potentially beneficial effects that target all phases of the atherosclerotic

Identifying Behavior Change Techniques for Digital Interventions Addressing Alcohol and Tobacco Co-Use: Findings From a Delphi Consensus Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and tobacco use frequently co-occur and contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. Despite the well-established benefits of addressing both behaviors simultaneously, health care professionals often face substantial challenges in delivering integrated interventions, including limited time, training, and resources. Digital health interventions offer a promising avenue to directly support patients in reducing alcohol and tobacco use, while bypassing some of the barriers encountered in clinical settings. However, there is a lack of consensus on the key behavior c

Impact of alcohol on gut microbial metabolism and the gut-liver-brain axis.

The gut microbiome includes a large and diverse microbial community that plays a central role in host health, supported by an extensive genomic repertoire that is distinct from and complementary to mammalian enzymatic pathways. Alcohol consumption disrupts this ecosystem, inducing microbial dysbiosis and altering functional interactions between the host and its gut bacteria that can lead to systemic effects. In this review, we examine how alcohol affects gut bacteria, and how these changes impair essential bacterial functions, including short-chain fatty acid production, mucin metabolism, biof

Present but Overlooked: A Scoping Review of Instruments and Approaches for Measuring Presenteeism Related to Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Use.

PURPOSE: The use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) can impact workplace productivity. Whilst presenteeism has a greater impact on productivity than absenteeism, it is less visible and often receives less attention. Measuring ATOD-related presenteeism is important for identifying the impact of AOD use and evaluating workplace AOD interventions. However, there is no standard approach to determining ATOD-related presenteeism. The aim of this scoping review was therefore to identify and describe different approaches and instruments used to determine ATOD-related presenteeism. METHODS: A

Targeting Modifiable Risks: Molecular Mechanisms and Population Burden of Lifestyle Factors on Male Genitourinary Health.

Health represents a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, with lifestyle factors accounting for approximately 60% of health determinants. Suboptimal health describes an intermediate condition between wellness and disease. According to 2023 WHO data, infertility affects approximately 17.5% of global adults, with male factors implicated in 30-50% of cases, establishing infertility as a critical public health challenge. Substantial preclinical and clinical evidence links suboptimal lifestyles to male reproductive dysfunction, positioning these behaviors as modifiable infertil

Alcohol-Mediated Skeletal Muscle Adaptations and Their Impact on Comorbidities.

At-risk alcohol use has significant adverse effects on multiple tissue and organ systems, including the skeletal muscle. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying alcohol-induced dysfunctional skeletal muscle (SKM) mass are multifactorial, involving decreased protein synthesis, increased protein degradation, impaired glucose homeostasis, bioenergetic dysregulation, aberrant extracellular matrix remodeling, impaired satellite cell function, circadian rhythm disruption, and epigenomic adaptations. This review provides a brief overview of these major alcohol-induced mechanisms of SKM dysfuncti

The bibliometric and visualization analysis of alcohol-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head: research trends and future directions (1998-2024).

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a progressive, debilitating orthopedic condition that primarily results from compromised vascular supply. Chronic alcohol intake is a well-established non-traumatic etiological factor in ONFH. Despite the increasing global research on ONFH, a bibliometric analysis using explicit literature searches in Web of Science reveals that no studies have specifically focused on alcohol-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (AONFH). This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the global research landscape of AONFH, identifying key res
