1. Fourteen healthy male volunteers were studied to assess the effects of Panax ginseng on blood alcohol clearance, utilizing each subject as his own control. 2. At 40 min after the last drink, the blood alcohol level in the test group receiving ginseng extract (3 g/65 kg body weight) along with alcohol (72 g/65 kg body weight) was about 35% lower than their control values. 3. When the blood alcohol level was compared on individual bases, alcohol concentrations in 10 out of 14 test subjects ranged from 32 to 51% lower than their control values. 4. These results demonstrate that P. ginseng extr

Among a group of 28 elderly veterans with dilated cardiomyopathy regularly attending an outpatient heart failure clinic, half had a history of habitual heavy drinking. It was concluded that chronic heavy drinking was the only identifiable factor responsible for the heart failure in three of these patients. Eleven other patients also had chronic heavy drinking as a possible etiological factor of their heart failure in addition to Coronary Artery Disease and/or hypertension. Less than 50% of the heavy drinkers totally abstained from alcohol after seeking medical treatment although they reduced t

The mortality and the causes of death have been studied in a cohort consisting of 1548 male alcoholics in Stockholm. During the period 1969-1981 there were 542 cases of death in this population. The mortality rates were triple those for males in Stockholm generally. Using the official causes of death there was a highly significant excess mortality in the following diagnostic groups: Cancer in the upper digestive region, primary hepatic cancer, cirrhosis in the liver, pancreatitis, pneumonia, alcoholism and alcoholic poisoning, suicides and other causes of violent death as well as ischemic hear

This study was designed to compare manifestations of FAS in the offspring of lower and upper middle class chronic alcoholic mothers, and to compare these offspring with those of nonalcoholic controls. There was highly significant difference in the incidence of FAS offspring between upper middle and lower class alcoholic mothers, 4.5% versus 70.9% respectively. Mean weight, length, and head circumference at birth in children of upper middle class alcoholic women was -ISD, those of lower class alcoholic women fell into -2SD. All other parameters, congenital malformation rate, failure to thrive,

The effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on thermotaxic behavior was investigated in 5-day-old rat pups. Pregnant dams were administered a liquid diet which contained 35% ethanol-derived calories (35% EDC) on days 6 to 20 of gestation. Two control groups were included: a liquid diet control which was pair-fed and had sucrose substituted for ethanol (0% EDC), and a group fed standard lab chow (LC) throughout pregnancy. Pups from each of these prenatal treatments were tested on a thermal gradient (thermocline). On each of 5 trails, pups were placed in the cool end of the thermocline and their pos

To confirm our previous finding that the underlying mechanism for the development of physical dependence on alcohol and barbital are fundamentally different from each other, further studies on the effect of drugs that modify neurotransmission on the alcohol and barbital withdrawal signs were carried out in alcohol and barbital dependent mice. Phentolamine, propranolol and methysergide exacerbated the alcohol withdrawal signs but suppressed the barbital withdrawal signs indicating the qualitative difference of the underlying mechanism. Some quantitative differences were also found in the effect

The Oriental flushing reaction is an adverse response to alcohol that appears to be genetically determined. In this study, the Oriental flushing reaction that was produced with ingestion of small amounts of alcohol was antagonized by antihistamine administration. A group of 17 subjects was tested. Each subject received placebo, diphenhydramine 50 mg (H-1 receptor antagonist), and cimetidine 300 mg (H-2 receptor antagonist) singularly and in combination. Alcohol was then administered orally. Most subjects given placebo experienced the typical flushing reaction that included a cutaneous flush, i

This prospective study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of Dupuytren's contracture (DC) and its relationship with possible causes, especially alcohol consumption and chronic liver disease. Four hundred thirty-two consecutively hospitalized patients were examined for evidence of DC. They were divided into five groups based on the following clinical, biologic, and histologic criteria: alcoholic cirrhosis (89 patients), noncirrhotic alcoholic liver disease (55 patients), chronic alcoholism without liver disease (46 patients), nonalcoholic chronic liver disease (68 patients), and a control

We have measured, by an intubation method, gastric evacuation and gastrointestinal absorption of alcohol ingested with a meal in seven healthy nonalcoholic subjects. A homogenized meal containing [14C]PEG and ethanol (1 g/kg body wt) was given intragastrically while saline containing [57CO]vitamin B12 was perfused into the duodenum. Of the ingested alcohol, 39.4 +/- 4.1% was absorbed through the stomach wall during the first postprandial hour and 73.2 +/- 4.2% during the total postcibal period, whereas only 24 +/- 3% was absorbed during the same time in the duodenum. Thus alcohol ingested with

Increased in vivo synthesis of immunoglobulin in patients with alcoholic liver damage has been attributed to direct activation of B cells, although other defects of lymphocyte function have been identified suggesting a more generalised defect. In the present study we have investigated the role of T cell regulation of immunoglobulin production in alcoholic liver disease analysed according to the presence or absence of alcoholic hepatitis. Spontaneous production of IgG and IgA was elevated and co-culture experiments confirmed hyper-reactivity of B cells, but also suggested impaired T cell functi

Study of alcoholic chronic organic brain syndrome may have applicability to the large population of alcoholics with less severe cerebral dysfunction. Brain impairment in alcoholics may be conceptualized as two clinically and neuropathologically distinguishable organic brain syndromes: alcohol amnestic disorder or Korsakoff's psychosis (KP) and alcoholic dementia. Alcoholic organic brain disease may result from two interacting pathophysiological processes: nutritional (thiamine) deficiency and ethanol neurotoxicity. Subcortical periventricular lesions associated with KP result primarily from th

Methyl alcohol intoxication has been reported to cause hyperamylasemia and pancreatitis. We describe a patient with severe, nonfatal methyl alcohol intoxication who had a rise in serum amylase activity with the level peaked on the second hospital day at tenfold the upper limit of normal. However, isoamylase analysis showed that this striking hyperamylasemia was due to salivary-type amylase. Furthermore, the serum lipase activity remained entirely normal during the peak amylase elevation. Thus, in cases of methyl alcohol intoxication, as in other clinical situations, hyperamylasemia, even when

Fifty consecutive alcohol dependent inpatient admissions are reported on. They were found to have grief, agoraphobic, paranoid and depressive symptoms secondary to the withdrawal state. These symptoms remitted with detoxification. Absence of anxiety signalled other disorders. Longituding observations aided diagnostic assessment and patient management. The history of the course of symptoms aids diagnoses when obtainable, but detoxification remains essential to discriminate primary from symptomatic or secondary psychiatric symptoms in the alcohol dependent person. Transient psychiatric symptoms

The morphologic features of alcoholic cardiomyopathy in human sudden death compared with those of experimental alcoholic cardiomyopathy (6 weeks of alcohol administration and simultaneous inhibition of catalase activity) proved to be nearly identical. Regular and similar alterations in alcoholic cardiomyopathy in both human victims of sudden death and experimental rats are described as a complex of alterations characteristic of alcoholic cardiomyopathy. This complex of changes was used as the basis for morphologic diagnosis of endomyocardial biopsy in two groups of patients: I) chronic alcohol
