Myotonic dystrophy (MyD) is a neuromuscular degenerative disorder that is neuropathologically characterized by minor changes, such as the presence of neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), thalamic inclusions and functional brainstem lesions. BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies are needed to resolve inconsistencies in previous findings regarding antecedents of alcoholism.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate genetic and environmental risk factors for alcoholism.
DESIGN: A 4-year longitudinal cohort study.
SETTING: General community.
PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort was randomly selected from 4 aboriginal groups in Taiwan. Cohort subjects free from any alcohol use disorder at phase 1 (n=499) were reassessed approximately 4 years later (phase 2). The percentage of participants who completed the study was 98.4%.

Natural derivatives of indole-3-carbaldehyde were isolated from the tropical marine ascidian Stomoza murravi. A series of 13 derivatives, three natural and 10 synthetic (brominated and N-methylated), were examined for their effects on cell division of sea urchin eggs. Seventeen hydantoin derivatives were tested as inhibitors of aldose reductase, an enzyme believed to participate in the initiation of diabetic complications. In order to diagnose hereditary fructose intolerance up to now, there were only the dangerous fructose-load and the biochemical evidence of this metabolic defect from biopsies of liver, intestine or kidney.
