Evaluation of sampling technique and transport media for the diagnostics of adenoviral eye infections. Adenovirus sampling and transport.

BACKGROUND: Human adenoviruses (HAdV) may cause pharyngoconjunctival fever, follicular conjunctivitis or epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Especially, outbreaks of the latter may lead to severe economic losses when preventive measures are implemented too late. Thus, a safe sampling method, proper specimen transport conditions and a fast and sensitive diagnostic technique is mandatory. METHODS: Two commercially available virus transport systems (VTS) were compared with two NaCl-moisturised sampling devices, one of which comprises Dacron-tipped plastic-shafted swabs and the other a cotton-ti

Neurological Complications Following Temporomandibular Joint Injections in Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review of Reported Adverse Events.

Background: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injections and arthrocentesis are commonly used minimally invasive methods for treating temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Although considered safe, they can cause neurological complications. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize all identified evidence for neurological adverse events following intra-articular TMJ interventions. Methods: This review was based on a systematic search with BASE, DOAJ, PubMed, SciELO, and Semantic Scholar on 28 May 2025. It included primary studies involving patients diagnosed with TMDs who underwent intra-a

Analgesic effect of epidural anesthesia via the intervertebral foramen approach in percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Satisfactory intraoperative analgesia is critical for percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED). Local anesthesia (LA) and epidural anesthesia (EA) are recommended for PTED. LA alone does not achieve satisfactory pain management during PTED and other analgesics or sedatives are usually needed. Traditional EA, which involves implanting an epidural catheter through the midline or paramedian, has disadvantages such as difficulty in catheterization and increased preoperative preparation time. Rather than performing conventional EA, we injected local anesthetics through t

Assessment of Anesthesia Capacity in Public Surgical Hospitals in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: International standards for safe anesthetic care have been developed by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Whether these standards are met is unknown in many nations, including Guatemala, a country with universal health coverage. We aimed to establish an overview of anesthesia care capacity in public surgical hospitals in Guatemala to help guide public sector health care development. METHODS: In partnership with the Guatemalan Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), a national survey of all publi

INvestigational Vertebroplasty Efficacy and Safety Trial (INVEST): a randomized controlled trial of percutaneous vertebroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures has historically been limited to several weeks of bed rest, anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications, calcitonin injections, or external bracing. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (the injection of bone cement into the fractured vertebral body) is a relatively new procedure used to treat these fractures. There is increasing interest to examine the efficacy and safety of percutaneous vertebroplasty and to study the possibility of a placebo effect or whether the pain relief is from local anesthetics placed directly on

Postthoracotomy pain management.

The following techniques appear efficacious in controlling postthoracotomy pain and reducing the amount of systemic opioids consumed: continuous intercostal blockade, paravertebral blockade, and epidural opioids and/or anesthetics. The combination of thoracic epidural opioid and local anesthetic is very effective at relieving postthoracotomy pain, however, considerable experience is required for insertion of the thoracic epidural catheter and postoperative respiratory monitoring. Intercostal and paravertebral catheters can be inserted intraoperatively under direct visualization, to reduce comp

Making vaccines more acceptable--methods to prevent and minimize pain and other common adverse events associated with vaccines.

The growing abundance of highly immunogenic vaccines has arrived with a burden of pain, distress, and common adverse reactions that in turn may interfere with parental compliance and aggravate anti-vaccine sentiment. In a study of 150 children in each of 2 age-groups, we found that approximately 20% of the subjects suffered serious distress or worse. During the procedural phase, approximately 90% of the 15-to-18 month old children and 45% of the 4-to-6 year old children showed serious distress or worse. To address non-adherence with pediatric vaccine schedules, we must consider all of the poss

Comparative Study of Cold Sensation, Pinprick, and Perfusion Index in Evaluating the Quality of Ultrasound-Guided Supraclavicular Brachial Plexus Block: An Observational Study.

Background Ultrasound (USG)-guided brachial plexus block has become the preferred method for surgeries of the upper limb as it reduces the risks of pneumothorax, nerve injury, and local anesthetic toxicity. An objective, noninvasive technique for evaluating the block's effectiveness is the perfusion index (PI). An increased PI suggests a successful brachial plexus block. Aims and objectives The study aimed to evaluate and compare cold sensation, pinprick, and PI to determine the most effective indicator for assessing the quality of USG-guided supraclavicular brachial plexus blocks (SCBPBs). Efficacy and safety of adjuvant intrathecal dexamethasone during spinal anesthesia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The use of intrathecal (IT) dexamethasone during subarachnoid block (SAB) has not been evaluated. There are no pooled data available to decide on the optimal regimen of IT dexamethasone during SAB, irrespective of the type of surgery. There is uncertainty about its dosage, effectiveness, and safety, and a need to establish clear guidelines on its use. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of use of IT dexamethasone during SAB. We performed a meta-analysis (PROSPERO, CRD42022304944) of trials that included patients who underwent a variety of surgical procedures under SAB. P

The Effect of Ultrasound-Guided Erector Spinae Plane Block Combined with Dexmedetomidine on Postoperative Analgesia in Patients Undergoing Modified Radical Mastectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most common malignancies in women worldwide is breast cancer. Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) can reduce pain after modified radical mastectomy for breast cancer. The duration of nerve block analgesia is limited if local anesthetic agents are used alone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dexmedetomidine on postoperative analgesia during a single injection of local anesthetics. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized study, 60 female American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I-II patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy were randomize

The effectiveness of triamcinolone acetonide vs. procaine hydrochloride injection in the management of carpal tunnel syndrome: a double-blind randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Corticosteroid injection into the carpal tunnel is frequently used for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Steroids are usually mixed with local anesthetics, which have positive effects that can aid the treatment of CTS by inhibiting the spontaneous discharge ability of excitable cells. The aim of this study was 3-fold: (1) to determine the efficacy of triamcinolone acetonide injection in the treatment of CTS, (2) to determine the efficacy of procaine hydrochloride (HCl) in the treatment of CTS, and (3) to compare the efficacy of triamcinolone acetonide and that of procai

Patient Satisfaction With, and Outcomes of, Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia at a Referral Hospital in Tanzania: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Regional anesthesia techniques are increasingly used in high-income countries (HICs) for both surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. However, regional anesthesia has not been utilized to the same degree in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) due to a lack of resources and trained personnel. This study evaluates patient satisfaction with, and outcomes of, ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia for extremity surgery at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in the Northeastern zone of Tanzania. METHODS: Study patients were ≥18 years of age; American Society of Anes

Influence of isoflurane and propofol on gastric slow wave patterns and pacing efficacy in pigs.

Gut motility is partly driven by underlying rhythmic electrical activity called slow waves. The origin and propagation of these electrical events are studied extensively in anesthetized animal models. However, the effects of anesthesia on slow waves remain unclear. This study examined how propofol and isoflurane influence spatiotemporal features of gastric slow waves, anterior-posterior coupling, and the efficacy of gastric pacing. Pigs were anesthetized with propofol (n = 7) and isoflurane (n = 8), and baseline electrical activity was measured using high-resolution surface-contact electrode a
