Changes in Residency Applicant Cancellation Patterns with Virtual Interviews: A Single-site Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Residency programs transitioned to primarily virtual interviews due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift raised questions regarding expectations and patterns of applicant cancellation timeliness. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in applicant cancellations after transitioning to virtual interviews. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of interview data from a three-year emergency medicine residency at a tertiary-care academic medical center. Using archived data from Interview Broker, we examined scheduling patterns between one in-person (2019-2020) and two

Long gun violence in California versus Texas: How legislation can reduce firearm violence.

INTRODUCTION: Long guns (LGs) are uniquely implicated in firearm violence and mass shootings. On 1/1/2019 California (CA) raised the minimum age to purchase LGs from 18 to 21. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of LG violence in CA vs. Texas (TX), a state with rising firearm usage and fewer LG regulations, hypothesizing decreased LG firearm incidents in CA vs increased rates in TX after CA LG legislation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Gun Violence Archive (2015-2021) was performed. An additional analysis of all firearm incidents within TX and CA was performed. CA and TX cen

The prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a historical epilepsy post-mortem collection.

Previous post-mortem epilepsy series showed phosphorylated tau (pTau) accumulation in relation to traumatic brain injury (TBI) rather than driven by seizure frequency. The Corsellis Epilepsy Collection, established in the mid-20th century, represents brain samples collected from patients living with a range of epilepsies from the 1880s to 1990s. Our aim was to interrogate this historical archive to explore relationships between epilepsy, trauma and tau pathology. AT8 immunohistochemistry for pTau was carried out in 102 cases (55% male, with mean age at death of 62 years) on frontal, temporal,

Newborn Dried Blood Spot Folate in Relation to Maternal Self-reported Folic Acid Intake, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Developmental Delay.

BACKGROUND: Maternal folic acid intake has been associated with decreased risk for neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Genetic differences in folate metabolism could explain some inconsistencies. To our knowledge, newborn folate concentrations remain unexamined. METHODS: We measured folate in archived newborn dried blood spots of children from the CHARGE (Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment) case-control study who were clinically confirmed at 24-60 months to have ASD (n = 380), developmental delay (n = 128), or typical development (n = 2

Polymorphisms in the human angiotensin converting enzyme gene (ACE) linked to susceptibility of COVID-19 and malaria infections in the Ghanaian population.

Genetic variations in the human angiotensin converting enzyme gene (ACE) influence ACE enzyme expression levels in humans and subsequently influence both communicable and non-communicable disease outcomes. More recently, polymorphisms in this gene have been linked to susceptibility and outcomes of infectious diseases such as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and malaria infections. This study is the first to investigate the genetic diversity of ACE and ACE2 polymorphisms in the Ghanaian population. Archived filter blood blot samples from malaria patients aged ≤9

Plasmodium knowlesi infection is associated with elevated circulating biomarkers of brain injury and endothelial activation.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a major public health concern with substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Malaysia, the emergence of Plasmodium knowlesi has led to a surge in zoonotic malaria cases and deaths in recent years. Signs of cerebral involvement have been observed in a non-comatose, fatal case of severe knowlesi infection, but the potential impact of this malaria species on the brain remains underexplored. To address this gap, we investigated circulating levels of brain injury, inflammation, and vascular biomarkers in a cohort of knowlesi-infected patients and controls. MET
