The olfactory bulb of adult specimens of Carassius auratus was subjected to an autoradiographic study using [3H]thymidine. Adult specimens o … outer limiting glial membrane and in the olfactory nerve fibre layer; these cells are identified as astrocytes. Different hypotheses about the destination and meaning of these proliferating cells and the similarities and differences with the cell proliferation in adult higher vertebrates are discussed.

Antigens of human polyomaviruses, the etiologic agents of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), and of human immunodeficiency virus were localized in paraffin sections from brains of six patients who died with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Immunostaining revealed polyomaviral antigens in oligodendrocytes and in some astrocytes. Human immunodeficiency (retro) virus antigens were immunostained in mononuclear macrophages, glial cells, and vascular endothelial cells. Both viral types were found ultrastructurally. The lesions of PML were more destructive than is usually seen i…

The brain cortex was studied in 7 Wistar rats aged 25-35 months. Rats receiving nootropil (piracetam) showed intracellular regeneration (enr … ion expressed on the morphological level by the development of comprehensive structural contacts of astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and capillaries with different parts and each other. The use of nootropil made it possible to ascertain the reversible pattern of some morphological changes related to physiological aging.

A case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in a 20-year-old male who died within 2 months, is described. Light microscopy revealed … -like intracytoplasmic inclusions were also seen. The inclusions occurred in oligodendroglia cells, astrocytes and neurons. This case illustrates a rapidly progressive form of SSPE which, in some aspects, differs from the chronic form and resembles acute measles encephalitis.

A new case of the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome is being reported. The neuropathologic changes consisted of developmental abnormalities of cerebral and cerebellar cortex and of the inferior olives. In addition, there were metabolic changes in the central nervous system, indicated by an accumulation of lipid within histiocytes of free in gray and white matter, deficiency in myelination and gliosis of the white matter, and marked proliferation of protoplasmic astrocytes in the gray matter. A unique feature of this case was the presence of numerous clusters of lipid-filled macrophages and occasio…

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, in which aquaporin-4 immunoglobulin G (AQP4-IgG) targets the water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) localized at astrocytic endfeet, thus triggering inflammatory lesions and tissue damage. The pathological characteristics of NMOSD are early loss of oligodendrocytes, extensive demyelination, and axonal injury. The pathogenesis of oligodendrocyte damage in NMOSD includes complement-dependent bystander effect, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity bystander effect, glutamate toxic

Diffuse gliomas with MYB or MYBL1 alterations are rare tumours mostly affecting children or young adults with long-term epilepsy. This category of glioma includes two morphological subtypes. The angiocentric subtype is characterized by an angiocentric pattern of growth and a frequent MYB:QKI fusion. The isomorphic subtype corresponds to a highly differentiated astrocytic glioma with low cellularity, low proliferation and no specific microscopic features. The diagnosis is based on the imaging, demonstrating a supratentorial tumor, associated with the confirmation of a MYB or MYBL1 rearrangement

We report the first case of pineoblastoma in a cow. At necropsy, a soft, gelatinous greyish yellow, 4 × 3 × 2 cm mass was found midsagittally on the dorsal surface of the midbrain. The mass enveloped the brainstem anterior to the cerebellum, extended to the pituitary fossa and was adherent to the ventromedial aspect of the occipital lobes. Histologically, the mass was unencapsulated, with extramedullary proliferation into the lobes and meninges, but was demarcated from the adjacent brain tissue. Histological findings were consistent with a pineoblastoma, as reported in other species, and the n

Aquaporin4 (AQP4) is a water channel protein located at astrocyte foot processes that plays a role in glymphatic system, a highly organized fluid transport pathway which seems to be involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) pathophysiology. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AQP4 levels were determined in 11 patients with AD, 10 patients with NPH, and 9 controls. We found significantly reduced AQP4 in AD patients, a trend in reduction in NPH patients, and a correlation between AQP4 and amyloid-β CSF levels. This study indicates the potential role of AQP4 and glymphati

Bipolar disorder is a chronic and severe mental disorder. Recently, new animal models have emerged to further investigate underlying mechanisms of bipolar disorder such as ouabain-induced hyperactivity in rats. In this study, we investigated the cerebrospinal fluid levels of S100B protein as a putative marker of astrocytic activity in bipolar mania induced by intracerebroventricular administration of ouabain in rats. Ouabain induced a two-fold increase in crossing responses in the open field test and increased 30% the cerebrospinal fluid concentration of S100B, as compared to vehicle group. Ou

The clinicopathological features and immunohistochemistry profile of desmoplastic cerebral astrocytoma of infancy are discussed in a 4 month old male infant who presented with an increasing head circumference more pronounced in the last two weeks prior to admission to the University Pediatric Hospital. This is a rare tumor that occurs in infants within the first two years of life and it is characterized by a massive, often cystic, supratentorial lesion usually in the frontoparietal region. It has a biphasic histologic pattern with an astrocytic and desmoplastic component and a good prognosis a

Some ghost tangles in the brains of Alzheimer patients were accompanied by many small argyrophilic structures which were electron microscopically confirmed to be degenerate neurites. In these ghost tangles, roughly dispersed 15 nm straight and occasional twisted tubules were penetrated by proliferated astrocytic processes. Immunohistochemically, these ghost tangles lost immunoreactivities to anti-NFT, -tau and -ubiquitin antibodies, but were thioflavine-S fluorescent, though antigenicity to beta-protein was not proved. This similarity in composition of degenerate neurite-bearing ghost tangles

We report a from of disseminated necrotizing leukoencephalopathy observed in five children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or lymphoma, who received systemic chemotherapy, brain radiation, and intrathecal (IT) methotrexate, cytosine arabinoside and hydrocortisone because of meningeal tumor involvement. Three children developed a progressive neurologic disease at the end of IT therapy or shortly thereafter. The lesions consisted in discrete, apparently coalescent foci of coagulative necrosis in the white matter, with a remarkable absence of inflammatory cells, little or no tissue break-down,

Microglia are increasingly implicated in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but their role remains difficult to define because the available evidence is heterogeneous in cohort composition, developmental stage, sampled brain region, and experimental modality. This Review summarizes current evidence on three related aspects of ASD-relevant microglial biology: microglial heterogeneity, immunometabolic regulation, and synapse-related pathways. Human postmortem studies, bulk transcriptomics, single-cell and spatial atlases, methylomic deconvolution, and in vivo neuroimmune imaging collectively suppor

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to long-lasting motor deficits, but the underlying cellular mechanisms still remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined glial and neuronal responses after focal cortical aspiration injury of the right hindlimb sensorimotor cortex in adult male rats. This is a model we have previously shown induces persistent gait asymmetry and postural deficits. Immunohistochemical analysis of activated microglia/macrophages (CD11b, IBA-1), astrocytes (GFAP), and neurons (NeuN) was performed bilaterally in the peri-lesional cortex at 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days …

Background: Persistent cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms have been increasingly reported as part of the post-COVID-19 condition. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are circulating biomarkers of neuronal and astrocytic injury that increase during acute SARS-CoV-2 infection; however, their role in long-term neuropsychiatric sequelae remains unclear. Objective: To provide a narrative overview of cognitive and neuropsychiatric sequelae following SARS-CoV-2 infection and to explore the association of plasma NfL and GFAP concentrations with cognitive imp

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), caused by mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLr) gene, has been increasingly associated with neurodegenerative and mood disorders. Studies with LDLR knockout mice (LDLr-/-) showed that neuroinflammation is a key event in FH-related brain dysfunction. Because mTOR inhibition has been shown to mitigate brain alterations in this model, we hypothesized that metformin, a drug reported to influence cellular energy metabolism, could attenuate FH-associated brain changes. To test this, adult LDLr-/- mice received daily oral doses of metformin (200

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation, neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment. During AD pathogenesis, Aβ undergoes several post-translational modifications, the most common of which is the isomerization of aspartic acid (isoD7-Aβ), a modification that contributes to the disease development. Passive immunization with isoD7-Aβ-specific antibodies reduced cognitive impairment and amyloid deposition in 5xFAD mice. However, therapeutic application of anti-Aβ antibodies has important limitations, emphasizing the need for alternative approaches. Here, we eva
