Clinical studies indicate that cigarette smoking increases the risk for developing acute pancreatitis. The nicotine metabolite 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) is a major cigarette smoke toxin. We hypothesized that NNK could sensitize to pancreatitis and examined its effects in isolated rat pancreatic acini and in vivo. The effect of local pretreatment with ipratropium versus placebo aerosol on nasal methacholine challenge was studied in a double-blind, crossover trial. Fourteen allergic and ten non-allergic patients suffering from rhinitis participated in this study. It can be concluded that intranasal administration of ipratropium has a suppressive effect on hypersecretion and sneezing, but has no influence on nasal airway resistance.

Sympathetic principal neurons were dissociated from superior cervical ganglia of new-born rats, and grown in cell culture. In electrophysiological experiments two types of excitatory synapses were found. One, which was relatively rare, was shown to operate by electrical transmission.
