High-dose Intensity-modulated proton therapy versus Standard-dose Intensity-modulated RadIation therapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (HI-SIRI): study protocol for a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemoradiotherapy is the standard of care for esophageal cancer as a neoadjuvant treatment before surgery, or as a definitive treatment for unresectable disease. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has been considered the standard radiation technique. However, patients suffer from treatment-related toxicities, and most die from disease progression or recurrence. With emerging technological advancement, proton therapy has theoretical advantages over IMRT because it offers apparent dosimetric benefits to allow dose escalation to the target while better sparing surrounding tissues

Efficacy and Feasibility of Proton Beam Therapy in Relapsed High-Risk Neuroblastoma-Experiences from the Prospective KiProReg Registry.

BACKGROUND: Despite an intensive multimodal treatment approach, approximately 50% of high-risk (HR) neuroblastoma (NB) patients experience progression. Despite the advances in targeted therapy, high-dose chemotherapy, and other systemic treatment options, radiation therapy (RT) to sites of relapsed disease can be an option to reduce tumor burden and improve chance for disease control. METHODS: Patients who received salvage irradiation with proton beam therapy (PBT) for local or metastatic relapse of HR NB within the prospective registry trials KiProReg and ProReg were eligible for this retros

Radiation doses in endovascular revascularisation of lower-extremity arterial diseases.

BACKGROUND: The use of percutaneous endovascular intervention in lower-extremity arterial diseases is increasing daily. With the growing technical experience of vascular surgeons, this is preferred to open surgery in more complex lesions. METHODS: The dose area product (DAP) and fluoro (FL) time values of 150 patients who underwent successful peripheral endovascular arterial intervention were analysed retrospectively. These values were evaluated by grouping according to the anatomical region and complexity of the lesion, type of procedure and arterial access. RESULTS: While the mean DAP was

Comparison of stereotactic body radiotherapy and radiofrequency ablation for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are recommended for patients with inoperable early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), with both offering promising results. However, it is largely unknown which of these two treatment modalities provides superior benefits for patients. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis compared clinical outcomes and safety between SBRT and RFA in patients with inoperable early-stage NSCLC. METHODS: Eligible studies published between 2001 and 2020 were obtained through a comprehensive search of the

Fibromyxoid Nephrogenic Adenoma: A Series of 43 Cases Reassessing Predisposing Conditions, Clinical Presentation, and Morphology.

Nephrogenic adenoma is a benign epithelial lesion of the genitourinary tract that arises from the reimplantation and proliferation of shed renal tubular cells in areas of urothelial injury and denudation. Fibromyxoid nephrogenic adenoma is a rare variant that consists of compressed spindle-shaped renal epithelial cells in a fibromyxoid background. Only 14 observations of this variant are reported in the literature. We performed a retrospective analysis of fibromyxoid nephrogenic adenomas from 3 large reference centers. We identified 43 lesions in 6 women and 36 men (2 in 1 man) with a median a

Evaluation of auto-segmentation accuracy of cloud-based artificial intelligence and atlas-based models.

BACKGROUND: Contour delineation, a crucial process in radiation oncology, is time-consuming and inaccurate due to inter-observer variation has been a critical issue in this process. An atlas-based automatic segmentation was developed to improve the delineation efficiency and reduce inter-observer variation. Additionally, automated segmentation using artificial intelligence (AI) has recently become available. In this study, auto-segmentations by atlas- and AI-based models for Organs at Risk (OAR) in patients with prostate and head and neck cancer were performed and delineation accuracies were e

Early radiotherapy preserves vision in sporadic optic pathway glioma.

BACKGROUND: Sporadic optic pathway/hypothalamic gliomas represent a unique entity within pediatric low-grade glioma. Despite favorable survival, location makes treatment difficult and local progression debilitating. This study is a longitudinal assessment of visual acuity (VA) among children treated within the last 2 decades. METHODS: Clinical characteristics were abstracted for patients treated from 2000 to 2018 at Texas Children's Cancer Center in Houston. Ophthalmologic data taken at 3- to 6-month intervals were examined with age-appropriate VA metrics converted to the LogMAR (logarithm of

Skeletal Related Events are Rare After Radiation Treatment for Metastatic Disease of the Femur.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common presenting symptom in patients with metastatic disease to the femur (MDF), and it is often difficult to differentiate pain from the tumor itself versus pain from an impending pathologic fracture. Radiation therapy (RT) is commonly used in the management of pain secondary to MDF but is not adequate in isolation when the underlying bone is structurally compromised. QUESTIONS/ PURPOSES: The purposes of this study were to determine 1) the incidence of skeletal related events (SREs) following RT to the femur, 2) the frequency and implications of orthopedic evaluation p
