Steroid responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT) presenting as major depression.

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric disease with symptoms of cognitive impairment, stroke-like episodes, seizures, and psychotic or affective symptoms associated with autoimmune thyroiditis and excellent steroid responsiveness; therefore, it is also called "steroid responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis" (SREAT). CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 50-year-old woman who developed a first-onset depressive syndrome with predominant cognitive impairment and inability to work. Antidepressive treatment and cognitive behavioral therapy over

Reaching new heights: comparing interpretation bias modification to exposure therapy for extreme height fear.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive models of anxiety disorders posit that biases in interpretation maintain, and potentially cause, anxiety. This study tested whether it is possible to decrease height fear symptoms through cognitive bias modification for interpretations (CBM-I). Additionally, the clinical utility of CBM-I was tested by comparing it to an already established treatment: exposure therapy. METHOD: Extremely height fearful individuals (N = 110) participated in the study. Acrophobic symptoms were measured before and after 2 sessions of CBM-I and were compared to the standard treatment for acroph

An evaluation of trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy for children in Zambia.

To monitor and evaluate the feasibility of implementing Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to address trauma and stress-related symptoms in orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Zambia as part of ongoing programming within a non-governmental organization (NGO). As part of ongoing programming, voluntary care-workers administered locally validated assessments to identify children who met criteria for moderate to severe trauma symptomatology. Local lay counselors implemented TF-CBT with identified families, while participating in ongoing supervision. Fifty-eight children and

A diagnostic dilemma between psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder is defined as a mental disorder that arises from the experience of traumatic life events. Research has shown a high incidence of co-morbidity between post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 32-year-old black African woman with a history of both post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis. Two years ago she presented to mental health services with auditory and visual hallucinations, persecutory delusions, suicidal ideation, recurring nightmares, hyper-arousal, and initial and middle insomnia. She was

The role of inflammatory cytokines in cognition and other non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) affects patients' lives with more than just physical impairment. Many of the non-motor aspects of PD, such as cognitive impairment, depression, and sleep disturbances, are common and are associated with a variety of poor outcomes. However, at present, the pathophysiology and clinical management of these symptoms are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine the associations between various illness-associated cytokines, cortisol, and the non-motor symptoms of PD. METHOD: The authors examined a panel of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF

Sensitivity to cholecystokinin-tetrapeptide in major depression.

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity to the panicogenic effects of cholecystokinin-tetrapeptide (CCK-4) is enhanced in panic disorder patients relative to normal controls (NC). In the present study, we determined whether sensitivity to CCK-4 is enhanced in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with no history of panic attacks. We also determined whether CCK-4 would exacerbate depressive symptoms. METHODS: The study used a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design. Behavioral and cardiovascular response to a submaximal dose (20 microg) of CCK-4 was studied in seven patients with MDD and 1

Nicotine dependence measures among adolescents with psychiatric disorders: evaluating symptom expression as a function of dependence severity.

Using methods based in item response theory, we examined a structured interview assessment of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) nicotine dependence and the Modified Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire (mFTQ) symptoms to explore the expression of particular symptoms as a function of level of nicotine involvement in a sample of 191 adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Despite our attempts to capture a broad range of smokers, 64% of teens were daily smokers and 68% met DSM-IV criteria for nicotine dependence. This paper describes the relative severity o

Symptom control in the pregnant cancer patient.

While much attention has been devoted to cytotoxic drugs and radiation therapy in the pregnant cancer patient, the drugs used for management of symptoms and complications related to cancer during pregnancy have been overlooked. There is substantial overlap between the symptoms of cancer and cancer management and the symptoms related to pregnancy. The mainstay of symptom management is drug therapy and the potential for a drug to be embryotoxic or teratogenic depends on when it is given. In general, drugs not proven safe in pregnancy should be withheld, especially during the first trimester. The

Comorbid disorders as moderators of response to family interventions among adolescents with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: While family interventions have shown efficacy in improving mood symptoms and family functioning in pediatric bipolar disorder, few studies have examined the effects of comorbid psychiatric conditions on patients' symptomatic or functional responses to treatment. METHODS: 145 adolescents with bipolar I or II disorder were randomly assigned to family-focused therapy (FFT-A) or a brief psychoeducational therapy (enhanced care; EC) and followed over 2 years. Participants received pharmacotherapy for the study's duration. We examined whether comorbid anxiety disorders, attention-defic

Efficacy of deep brain stimulation for Tourette syndrome and its comorbidities: A meta-analysis.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, often accompanied by comorbid disorders. Optional treatments for patients with TS include behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and neurostimulation techniques. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been considered a therapeutic approach for refractory TS and its comorbid symptoms. However, systematic comparison is necessary to understand the therapeutic effect of DBS among patients with TS with various comorbid symptoms, demographic characteristics, or stimulation targets. Consequently, our resea

Development and effectiveness of a user-centered mobile application for informal caregivers of people living with dementia: randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dementia places substantial physical, psychological, and social demands on informal caregivers, and caregiving needs may change across the dementia trajectory as cognitive, behavioral, and functional changes alter day-to-day care demands. Digital interventions may not fully address caregivers' evolving and heterogeneous needs and preferences. This study aimed to develop a user-centered mobile application informed by caregiver-identified needs and preferences across the dementia trajectory and to evaluate its effectiveness. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted follo

Gut microbiota-expressed sulfotransferase sulfonates 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and promotes depression.

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) has been associated with depressive symptoms, but the underlying cause of this deficiency remains unclear. Here, we isolated and cultured Escherichia coli (E. coli) from the feces of depressive patients with VDD and found that this bacterium could metabolize 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25[OH]D3) in vitro. In vivo, oral gavage of E. coli induced a decline in circulating 25[OH]D3 levels and elicited depressive-like behaviors in mice. The gene encoding the 25[OH]D3-metabolizing enzyme in E. coli was identified as a sulfotransferase (SULT). A recombinant strain engineered for

Parents' Gratitude Lability and Its Associations With Adolescents' Psychological Well-Being and Prosocial Behaviors: The Roles of Adolescents' Gratitude and Gender.

Parents play an important role in adolescents' gratitude development, yet little is known about whether and how fluctuations in parents' gratitude (i.e., gratitude lability) over time are associated with adolescents' socioemotional adjustment. Using three-wave data spanning 16 months, this study examined the longitudinal associations between parents' gratitude lability and adolescents' socioemotional outcomes, including depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and prosocial behaviors, in 537 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (MChild age = 10.25 years, SD = 0.69; 57.3% girls). Adolescents' gratitu

Personalized models of eating disorder symptoms and suicide risk in anorexia nervosa spectrum disorders: protocol for a longitudinal, passive-sensing study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Anorexia Nervosa and Atypical Anorexia (termed here Anorexia Nervosa Spectrum Disorder, or ANSD) are at elevated suicide risk, yet limited research has explored the progression from suicidal ideation to suicide attempts among individuals with ANSD. Leveraging intensive real-time data, the present study will identify the behavioral, physiological, and psychological mechanisms linking ANSD and suicide. METHODS: Our sample will comprise 230 adults with ANSD and current and/or lifetime suicidality. Participants will complete 21 days of ecological momentary assessment

Could R-Ketamine and Wolfram Syndrome Inform Understanding of Depression and Suicidality? A Sigma-1 Receptor-Based Perspective.

Loss of function mutations in the WFS1 gene cause Wolfram syndrome, which is characterized by juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, neurodegeneration, hearing loss and optic nerve atrophy. Psychiatric symptoms, including major depression and suicidal behavior, are common in this disorder. WFS1 mutations induce this condition through altering interactions between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, resulting in diminished Ca2+ import that leads to mitochondrial dysfunction. Quite recently, it was shown that such impaired Ca2+ transport could be restored by the experiment

Aerobic exercise improves depressive symptoms in the unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Aerobic exercise has been shown to have established benefits on motor function in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the impact of exercise on depressive symptoms in PD remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of regular exercise, specifically using a forced running wheel, on both motor performance and the prevalence of depression in a unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rat model of PD. The behavioral outcomes of exercise were assessed through the rotarod test (RT), forelimb adjusting step test (FAST), sucrose consumption test (SCT), and novelty sucrose splash test (NSST). Our data

14-3-3γ haploinsufficiency leads to altered dopamine pathway and Parkinson's disease-like motor incoordination in mice.

The 14-3-3 protein family with seven isoforms found in mammals is widely expressed in the brain and plays various roles in cellular processes. Several studies have reported that 14-3-3γ, one of the 14-3-3 protein isoforms, is associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders, but the role of 14-3-3γ in the pathophysiology of brain diseases is unclear. Although studies have been conducted on the relationship between 14-3-3γ protein and Parkinson's disease (PD), a common neurodegenerative disorder with severe motor symptoms such as bradykinesia and rigidity, a direct connection remains to b

Postnatal Foxp2 regulates early psychiatric-like phenotypes and associated molecular alterations in the R6/1 transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a devastating disorder characterized by a triad of motor, psychiatric and cognitive manifestations. Psychiatric and emotional symptoms appear at early stages of the disease which are consistently described by patients and caregivers among the most disabling. Here, we show for the first time that Foxp2 is strongly associated with some psychiatric-like disturbances in the R6/1 mouse model of HD. First, 4-week-old (juvenile) R6/1 mice behavioral phenotype was characterized by an increased impulsive-like behavior and less aggressive-like behavior. In this line, we iden

Sunburns and Sun Protection Behaviors among Male Hispanic Outdoor Day Laborers.

Individuals who work outside are at increased risk for skin cancer due to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Little is known about UV exposures and sun safety practices of outdoor day laborers, who are disproportionately Hispanic. This study identified the correlates of sunburn and sun protection behaviors in a sample of male, Hispanic day laborers (n = 175). More than half of the participants (54.9%) experienced one or more sunburns when working during the past summer, and 62.9% reported having one or more symptoms of heat illness. The frequency of engaging in sun protection be

The relation between patient characteristics and their carers' use of a directive versus collaborative support stance.

OBJECTIVES: Collaborative support provided by carers (family and friends) of individuals with eating disorders has been shown to be integral to patient motivation and clinical outcome. Little is known about factors that contribute to carers' use of collaborative, as opposed to directive, support stance. This exploratory research investigated associations between patient characteristics and carers' support beliefs and behaviors. METHOD: Eating disorder patients (n = 72) completed measures of readiness for change, eating disorder, and psychiatric symptom severity, and interpersonal functioning.
