A number of different organisms can be isolated from intraabdominal infection. The most common are aerobic Gram-negative bacilli. Anaerobes are not unusual. Liver biopsy results and clinical records from 13 patients with sickle cell anemia were reviewed to assess the relative importance of local ischemia or of factors unrelated to sickling as a cause of their liver disease. Laparoscopic findings of the liver in 13 cases with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) diagnosed by wedge or needle biopsy were investigated. The characteristic features of laparoscopic appearance--gentle undulation--were observed in 11 out of 13 (85%) patients with PBC. These gentle undulations were irregularly shaped areas from 0.5 to 3 cm in diameter. Those observed in s-PBC were greater in number and more pronounced than those in a-PBC. A specific assay for hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) has been applied to the determination of the polysaccharide in urine. The excretion in 22 healthy subjects was 330 micrograms/24 h (SD 77). The excretion was correlated with body weight and was therefore somewhat higher in males than in females. Twenty-eight patients with cystic fibrosis, who survived to over 18 years of age are reported. The ages at the time of diagnosis ranged from and two and half months to over 21 years. A newer approach to the early diagnosis of acute biliary tract disease is review. Nosocomial sinusitis and bacteremia due to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter species, or P. aeruginosa develop in hospitalized patients.
