We evaluated the effects on bone formation of combining synthesized collagen model polypeptides consisting of a Pro-Hyp-Gly [poly(PHG)] sequence and alpha-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) particles with various median sizes (large: 580.8 μm; small: 136.2 μm; or large and small mixed: 499.3 μm) in a skull defect model in mini-pigs. Quantitative image analyses for the volume density (VD) of new bone revealed that the VD in each α-TCP group was significantly higher than that in the poly(PHG) control group, with the mixed group showing the highest VD among all the groups at 4 weeks after implantation.

Proper injection of poly-l-lactic acid has a role in avoiding development of subcutaneous papules. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of our injection technique ("cross-fanning") and compared it to 4 previous studies. Forty patients were evaluated for adverse events (bruising, edema, erythema, subcutaneous papules) and satisfaction. Papule incidence was compared with the other studies. The incidence of papules (4/40) was significantly lower than that of VEGA and Chelsea and Westminster (P = 0.00003, P = 0.03), but not significantly different than APEX002 or Blue Pacific (P = 0.42, P = 0.61).

A 58-year old male presented with meningitis associated with subgaleal and subdural collections 6 weeks following a temporal craniotomy for resection of recurrent glioblastoma multiforme and Gliadel wafer implantation. Candida parapsilosis was cultured from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and Gliadel wafers removed during surgical debridement. He was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Candida parapsilosis meningitis secondary to Gliadel wafer placement.

We present a case of a 50-year-old morbidly obese woman who presented with a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the anterior abdominal wall due to a strangulated umbilical hernia. The case was managed through damage control surgery (DCS) with an initial surgery to stabilise the patient and a subsequent definitive operation and biological graft hernia repair. We emphasise the relevance of DCS principles in the management of severe abdominal sepsis.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the long-term histological response of the human larynx to Gore-Tex implant and evaluated whether its biocompatibility.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective histological study.
METHODS: We conducted medialization laryngoplasty with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTEE or Gore-Tex) in a patient with vocal-fold paralysis. A strip of Gore-Tex was folded several times and inserted into the pocket preserving the inner perichondrium through a thyroid cartilage window. The patient died 12 months later and we histologically analyzed the larynx.

Applications of water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) in the life sciences are limited by their poor colloidal stability in physiological media and nonspecific interaction with biomatter, particularly cell membranes. We have studied colloidal stability and nonspecific interactions with living cells for zwitterionic d-penicillamine-coated QDs (DPA-QDs) and the traditionally used carboxylated 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid-coated QDs (MUA-QDs) and found clear advantages of DPA-QDs. OBJECTIVE: Both injectable silicone biomaterial (PTQ) and pyrolytic carbon-coated beads (Durasphere) have been shown to be effective in treating passive faecal incontinence due to internal sphincter dysfunction. This is a randomized study to evaluate their relative safety and efficacy.

We have retrospectively assessed the charts of 166 patients who underwent rhinoplasties from March of 2005 to July of 2007, in the Plastic Surgery Department of the University of Torvergata Rome, Italy. From the operation chart of each patient, we filled out a form with the following details: access incisions to the nasal bone cartilage skeleton, maneuvers performed on the inferior lateral and superior cartilages, implants and/or grafts used, procedures made to the nasal base, types of osteotomies, and number of concomitant septoplasties. All the patients were operated under total anesthesia.
