Postoperative early weight-bearing using double plating for periprosthetic, interprosthetic, and interimplant distal femur fractures following total knee arthroplasty: A report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Distal femur fractures (DFFs) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in older patients often require prolonged non-weight-bearing, thereby decreasing their activities of daily living (ADL) and increasing mortality. This report clarifies early weight-bearing safety and utility by using double-plate fixation on medial and lateral sides (LM180 double-plate fixation) for DFFs following TKA. CASE PRESENTATION: Three cases of Su Type III periprosthetic, interprosthetic, and interimplant DFFs following TKA, where bone stock was limited, were treated with LM180 double-plate fixation usin

Acute total hip arthroplasty with a highly-porous multi-holes cup in elderly patients after traumatic acetabular fracture: A case series and literature review.

There are no general guidelines for the treatment of acetabular fractures. Open reduction and internal fixation is advised in young and active patients, while acute total hip arthroplasty (THA) is recommended for elderly patients in order to allow immediate weight bearing. Various THA systems have been reported. We present four cases, mean age 79 years (range 67-92), of closed acetabular fractures managed with acute cementless THA, comprising a highly-porous multi-hole acetabular cup and a CLS-type femoral stem. After extensive pre-operative planning, autograft was used to fill in the acetabul

Management of aggressive recurrent thoracic spine aneurysmal bone cyst in a 7-year-old male: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Spinal aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, histologically benign tumors with aggressive behavior, which may cause bone and soft-tissue destruction, particularly affecting neural elements. Management of these tumors, including treatment modalities and follow-up protocols, remains challenging. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old boy presented with chest wall pain persisting for two months before admission, accompanied by progressive mono paresis lasting ten days before admission. Myelopathy signs were evident during the examination. Imaging confirmed a multicystic lesion at the T6 lev

Unstable Fractures of the Greater Tubercle of the Humerus. A Case Report.

The paper presents the results of stabilization of an unstable, comminuted fracture of the greater tubercle with absorbable sutures after fixation of a comminuted fracture of the proximal humerus with a reconstructive nail. This unusual procedure was performed upon ascertaining an anatomical reconstruction of the humeral head fragments and mechanical efficiency of the intramedullary nail fixation.Stabilization was performed with absorbable sutures through an extended surgical approach that allowed anchoring the unstable fragments of the greater tubercle to the shaft. The resulting anatomical p

Skin Symptoms That Appeared after Fixation with a Titanium Plate in a Jaw Deformity Patient Suffering from Palmoplantar Pustulosis: A Case Report.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a stubborn skin disease involving repeated aseptic small pustules on the palms and soles of the feet, which is triggered and exacerbated by metals and dental focal infections. There are few reports of an exacerbation of PPP symptoms after orthognathic surgery. The patient is a 40-year-old female who consulted an orthodontist at our hospital, complaining of a protruding maxilla and malocclusion. Under the diagnosis of skeletal prognathism, she underwent surgery for jaw deformity. Although no allergic symptoms were observed during the orthodontic treatment prior

An aneurysmal bone cyst ruptured and compressed the spinal cord: a case report.

Spinal aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare benign bone lesion with various prognosis. Common clinical symptoms of spinal ABCs include local pain, swelling. But we presented a case of a teenager girl who exhibited symptoms of acute thoracic cord compression after a slight trauma and was then diagnosed with ABC in her thoracic spine. A unique aspect is that this patient did not have symptoms before she fell down on her hip, and had an acute worsening of her neurological deficits. In the vast majority of cases, for a teenager, the trauma on the spine is tiny after falling down on the hips. That

Identification of Stress Fields in a Customized Mandibular Reconstruction Based on a Photoelastic Model.

Tumors, trauma and infections are the main reasons for subjecting a patient to a bone reconstruction made with the use of bone grafts or prosthetic elements, using for example components such as osteosynthesis plates, meshes and screws for their stabilization. This study focuses on the photoelastic analysis of a customized prosthesis of the jaw for a patient diagnosed with osteonecrosis. A resin model was manufactured as follows: DICOM files were processed in ScanIP software to obtain an STL file that was used to generate an antagonist model of the healthy section of the jaw using CATIA softwar

[Biomaterials for craniofacial reconstruction].

Biomaterials for reconstruction of bony defects of the skull comprise of osteosynthetic materials applied after osteotomies or traumatic fractures and materials to fill bony defects which result from malformations, traumata or tumor resections. Other applications concern functional augmentations for dental implants or asthetic augmentations in the region of the face. For ostheosynthesis, mini- and microplates from titanium alloys provide major advantages concerning biocompatibility, stability and individual fitting to the implant bed. The necessity of removal of asymptomatic plates and screws

[Osteochondritis dissecans].

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a disease of unknown etiology, characterized by separation of necrotic bone from its bony bed. While the juvenile form seen in patients with open physes has a 60-90% rate of spontaneous resolution, the adult form has virtually no chance of spontaneous healing. Plain X-rays are sufficient for the diagnosis, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for evaluation of disease progression and/or healing. The clinical correlation of MRI criteria defined in recent years to determine stability of the lesion is high. Juvenile OCD can be treated conservatively

[Treatment of scoliosis and scoliokyphosis in Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis].

Spine deformities are a frequent symptom of neurofibromatosis Recklinghausen. Especially NF1 shows next to numerous alterations in the skeleton in some cases massive scoliosis and kyphosis. There are different theories for the development of the spine deformities, one of them is that specific alterations of the vertebra are caused by an elevated intraspinal pressure on the osteoporotic bone. A classification from a clinical point of view discriminates 3 types of severity. Type 1 shows instead of the in x-rays inconspicuous findings neurofibromatosistypical alterations in other diagnostic proce

Midface surgery from Tessier to distraction.

The wall separating the face and the cranium was broken by Paul Tessier and Gérard Guiot in the 1960s, making it possible to perform a combined operation around the orbits and forehead, and opening up close cooperation between plastic surgeons and neurosurgeons, especially for treatment of the major malformations such as hypertelorism of major facial retrusions. The principles of mobilization of the orbits to correct teleorbitism or orbital dystopia are recalled with reference to the different variations and with clinical examples. Facial advancement to correct the retrusions created by facioc

Failure of a non-porous-coated acetabular component inserted without cement in primary total hip arthroplasty.

Thirty-four patients (thirty-eight hips) had a primary total hip arthroplasty with insertion of a non-porous-coated titanium-alloy acetabular component without cement. This component is initially stabilized with use of a central acetabular polyethylene peg, which is inserted into the pelvis, as well as supplementary cortical-bone screws inserted into the ilium. The original diagnosis was degenerative joint disease in thirty-four hips and avascular necrosis in four hips. Twenty-five femoral components were inserted with cement, and thirteen non-porous-coated femoral implants were inserted witho…

[Plastic operation of the cruciate ligament (part I).].

In the submitted paper the authors describe in the introduction various possible ways of using autologous, homologous and heterologous transplants. A graft taken from the patellar ligament with two bone blocks from the patella and head of the tibia is, because of the great structural strength, the transplant of choice. As far as the surgical technique is concerned, the authors abondoned the open method because of its known disadvantages such as major arthrotomy and associated damage of proprioceptors of the knee joint. The authors are using the semi-open arthroscopic method, whereby artroscopi
