Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is the most focal and invasive of the electromagnetic brain stimulation therapies. A subcutaneous pulse generator provides continuous stimulation of circumscribed brain tissue via a multicontact microelectrode that terminates within its target. The result is an adjustable, reversible, and specific therapy. Despite limited understanding of its mechanisms of action, DBS efficacy has been established in several movement disorders, and promising reports have emerged for Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and major depression. Deep brain stimulation may p…

Haemophilus parasuis, an important swine pathogen, is the aetiological agent of Glässer's disease. It is responsible for cases of polyserositis, meningitis and pneumonia in young pigs. To date, 15 serotypes have been described, although several non-typable isolates are frequently recovered from diseased animals. The pathogenesis of H. parasuis infection is poorly understood. To cause meningitis, H. parasuis would have to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), composed of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMEC). The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of H. parasuis to int…

This report describes a dog that developed brain abscesses following prolonged immunosuppression with cyclosporin. Bacteria within the abscess were most likely Nocardia, an organism well recognised in immunosuppressed humans, and probably reached the brain through haematogenous spread from a more long-standing abscess in the mediastinum. Bacterial brain abscesses developing in this manner are very rare in dogs and this case highlights the wider range of possible diagnoses that need to be considered in immunosuppressed patients and the care with which potent drugs such as cyclosporin should be …

Understanding what influences people to donate or not donate body organs is critical for the future of transplant surgery and medical research. Are people involved with a brain donor program for research influenced by the same factors, and are they also donors for organ transplantation? Using web-based technology, people involved in an Australian brain donation program (for research) were asked to complete a questionnaire designed to elicit demographic information, motivational factors and information about involvement in organ transplantation programs. The response rate was 82%. The majority …

OBJECTIVES: Debilitating neurobehavioural sequalae often complicate traumatic brain injury (TBI). Cognitive deficits, particularly of attention, memory, information-processing speed and problems in self-perception, are very common following severe TBI.
METHOD: The Neurobehavioural Rating Scale (NRS) is a multi-dimensional clinical-based assessment instrument designed and validated to measure neurobehavioural disturbances following TBI. This study examined 41 patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit of the Department of General Neurosurgery at Cologne University Hospital after sev…

Recent studies have shown that persisting deficits remain even in young children with mild brain injuries. Our 2-year study investigated patterns of recovery in children and adolescents with ABI over the past 10 years. In the first year, we retrospectively reviewed demographic information (e.g., age at injury, gender, severity, GCS, coma length, and LOS), medical status, academic and therapy interventions, psychological, emotional and cognitive, physical, social, and family issues reported by parents and clients and outcome data from an adapted version of the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory…

Epidemiological studies have suggested a strong association of fetal and neonatal brain damage with fetal infections and free radical release. Intrauterine infection and hypoxia ischemia appear to share some characteristics, including high levels of cytokines and adhesion molecules. The relevance of the actions of cytokines to a variety of neurological disorders has opened a potentially fruitful area of research and therapeutic development.

INTRODUCTION: Autonomic dysfunction syndrome following traumatic brain injury is a situation involving adrenergic hyperactivity produced by the lack of control over the autonomous nervous system at a central level. The difficulties involved in its therapeutic management make it even more important.
CASE REPORTS: We report the cases of a boy and a girl aged 6 and 12 years, respectively, who had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury with important brain damage that included diencephalic and mesencephalic compromise and areas of diffuse axonal injury. From the acute phase onwards, they presen…

In a comprehensive set of experiments in this issue of Neuron, Kwon et al. demonstrate that conditional inactivation of Pten leads to behavioral abnormalities and neuropathological changes. Pten mutants displayed reduced social interaction and heightened responses to sensory stimuli. Additionally, neuronal hypertrophy, as well as macrocephaly was observed. Based on rare human mutations in PTEN and the PI3K pathway, the authors suggest they have produced a potential animal model of autism with macrocephaly.

TG-interacting factor (TGIF) is a homeodomain-containing protein and functions as a transcriptional repressor within the TGF-beta and retinoic acid signaling pathways. Heterozygous mutations of TGIF have been found in patients with holoprosencephaly (HPE), which is the most common congenital brain malformation in humans. However, targeted null deletions of the entire Tgif gene in mice surprisingly revealed no apparent brain defects. We report here that deletion of the third exon of Tgif gene resulted in a defined spectrum of brain developmental defects including exencephaly, microcephaly, HPE,…

The purpose of this study was to assess reading-related oculomotor rehabilitation in individuals with acquired brain injury. Adults with either stroke (n=5) or traumatic brain injury (n=9) participated. Training paradigms included single-line and multiple-line simulated reading, as well as basic versional tracking (fixation, saccade, and pursuit), twice per week over an 8 week period. Training modes included normal internal oculomotor visual feedback either in isolation (4 weeks) or concurrent with external oculomotor auditory feedback (4 weeks). Training effects were assessed objectively usin…

Malaria represents a continuing and major global health challenge and our understanding of how the Plasmodium parasite causes severe disease … ological studies, animal models and in vitro cell culture work, has focussed attention on the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This represents the key interface between the brain parenchyma and the parasite, which develops within an infected red cell but remains inside the vascular space. Studies of BBB function in cerebral malaria have provided some evidence …

Arterial hypertension is not only a major risk factor for cerebrovascular accidents, such as stroke and cerebral hemorrhage, but is also associated to milder forms of brain injury. One of the main causes of neurodegeneration is the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) that is also a common trait of hypertensive conditions, thus suggesting that such a mechanism could play a role even in the onset of hypertension-evoked brain injury. To investigate this issue, we have explored the effect of acute-induced hypertensive conditions on cerebral oxidative stress. To this aim, we have developed a …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to approximately 100 hospitalizations per 100,000/year. Whereas diabetes insipidus is a well-known complication of TBI, anterior hypopituitarism as a consequence of TBI has been regarded as rare. More recent studies, however, suggest a prevalence of at least 30% of anterior pituitary dysfunction after TBI. Clinical signs of anterior hypopituitarism are often subtle and may be masked by sequalae of TBI. Therefore, post-traumatic anterior pituitary dysfunction may remain undiagnosed and, possibly, aggravate symptoms of brain injury. Moreover it may, if undiagno…

While most cigarette smokers endorse a desire to quit smoking, only about 14% to 49% will achieve abstinence after 6 months or more of treatment. A greater understanding of the effects of smoking on brain function may (in conjunction with other lines of research) result in improved pharmacological (and behavioral) interventions. Many research groups have examined the effects of acute and chronic nicotine/cigarette exposure on brain activity using functional imaging; the purpose of this paper is to synthesize findings from such studies and present a coherent model of brain function in smokers. …

Human cysticercosis is caused by dissemination of embryos of Taenia solium from the intestine via the hepatoportal system to the tissues and organs of the body. We report, probably the first case, where orbital cysticercosis was associated with multiple Cysticercus cellulosae cysts in the brain and subcutaneous tissue. Thorough screening for all the sites of involvement by the cyst is extremely useful for knowing the extent of dissemination, infection control, and for epidemiological purposes.
