A number of recent studies have reported reduced growth velocity among breast-fed infants, as compared with standard growth curves. Six infants are reported who developed an inflammatory proctocolitis in the first month of life while being breast fed exclusively. All has been born at term and had normal perinatal courses. Two sisters had breast cancer at four years and 11 years after diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease. The affected breast tissues had received several hundred rads of scatter radiation during treatment of the lymphoma. Family history revealed breast cancer in a third sister and five other women in the paternal line. Cytogenetic and HLA studies showed no markers of susceptibility to neoplasia. Development of second primary neoplasms of the breast in the two sisters may have resulted from interactions between genetic factors and carcinogenic effects of radiation exposure.

Small amounts of milk of calcium settling to the bottom of multiple tiny benign breast cysts produce the mammographic picture of clustered linear and curvilinear calcifications when imaged in lateral projection with a horizontal x-ray beam. Elevated concentrations of peptide hormones have been described previously in human breast fluid. In the current study, the levels of cortisol, progesterone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androsterone, androsterone sulfate, dehydroisoandrosterone, dehydroisoandrosterone sulfate, estradiol, estrone, estradiol sulfate, and estrone sulfate were measured. The levels of the four 17-ketosteroids and the two estrogen sulfates were markedly elevated over the plasma level, while that of the other compounds was the same or only slightly higher than the plasma levels of the same compounds.

Considering the female breast to be a secondary sexual organ the sensibility of nipple and areola gains essentially in functional significance. This sensory function is impaired as well by reduction mammaplasty. Thus all different operation methods propagated in recent years have to be rated as to functional and esthetic results with regard to resection weight. The optimal operation method presupposes: 1. Satisfactory esthetic result, 2. optional reductional possibility up to subcutaneous mastectomy, 3. minor sensory impairment of nipple and areola.

The clinical records and radiographs of 37 patients with carcinoma of the breast (stages I and II) treated with primary radiation therapy without mastectomy were reviewed. Factors influencing survival were reviewed in 464 patients with recurrent breast cancer. Site of first recurrence and rate of tumor progression governed prognosis more than choice of initial therapy. From the SEER files of the NCI, 8,587 cases of breast cancer diagnosed in 1975 were analyzed. Of these cases, 5.3% were noninvasive. Of the invasive cancers under 0.5 cm in diameter, 17.2% had positive axillary lymph nodes. Where the physician recorded no palpable axillary lymph nodes, 34.5% were found to be positive.

Of 210 pathologically confirmed palpable breast masses examined by continuous ultrasound B-scanning using a 2.5- or 7-MHz transducer and mammography, fluid filled cysts more than 1 cm in diameter were diagnosed accurately in 75 cases.
