Evaluation of oral telmisartan administration as a suppression test for diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism in cats.

BACKGROUND: Development of a telmisartan-based suppression test may facilitate the diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism (PHA) in cats, which remains difficult today. OBJECTIVES: To develop a telmisartan suppression test (TST) that is safe, and able to suppress aldosterone secretion in healthy cats but not in cats with PHA. ANIMALS: Ten healthy cats and 6 cats with PHA. METHODS: Prospective study using a placebo-controlled crossover design to investigate a TST in healthy cats, and evaluation of TST in cats with PHA. Plasma aldosterone concentration, potassium concentration, and systolic b…

Molecular detection of pathogens from ticks collected from dogs and cats at veterinary clinics in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Ticks carry microbes, some of which are pathogenic for humans and animals. To assess this One Health challenge, 342 ticks were collected from pet dogs and cats at 10 veterinary clinics in Finland as part of the European project "Protect Our Future Too". METHODS: The tick species were identified, and ticks were screened with quantitative PCR (qPCR) for tick-borne pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Borrelia miyamotoi, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma spp., Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and Babesia spp. For comparison, a subset…

A review of evidence-based management of infectious ocular surface disease in shelter-housed domestic cats.

Infectious ocular surface disease (IOSD) is a common problem in shelter-housed domestic cats and has a widespread negative impact on animal welfare. While the common etiological agents are well-described, addressing IOSD in large groups of animals presents a management challenge to the clinician and logistical challenges to shelter employees. Treatments, diagnostics, and prevention strategies that are effective in privately owned or experimental animals may be impractical or ineffective in the shelter environment. This review article focuses on the relative prevalence of etiological agents in …

Impact of genetic diversity and antibiotic-resistance of Salmonella isolated from feral cats: One Health approach.

Free-living cats usually live in colonies in urban areas, especially close to parks and neighbourhoods where people feed them without any sanitary control. This can pose a human, animal and environmental health concern due to the close contact between uncontrolled colonies, the population and other domestic and/or wild animals. Thus, this study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains isolated from feral cats in a previous epidemiological study in the Gran Canaria island (Spain). A total of nineteen Salmonella is…

Emerging Lagochilascaris minor infections in domestic cats from Costa Rica: A zoonotic threat for the region.

Two cases of lagochilascariasis minor in domestic cats from Costa Rica within a period of two months are recorded for the first time in Central America. Clinical findings included purulent discharge and a tumor in the left ear in one of the cats, whereas the other cat had an ulcerated cervical lesion. Both patients underwent surgical procedures during which nematode worms were collected and analyzed. The collected nematodes were identified using a combination of morphological and molecular assays, which revealed a 99.1% similarity in the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 with L. minor from Mexico. …

Diagnostic utility of LDH measurement for determining the etiology of modified transudate pleural effusion in cats.

Fluid analysis is an initial approach for determining the underlying causes of body cavity effusions. Modified transudate is commonly diagnosed in pleural effusion in cats, however, it provides limited diagnostic information. Aims of this study were to investigate common etiologies causing different pleural fluid types and to evaluate the usefulness of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) for differentiating the etiology in modified transudates in cats. Pleural effusion samples from 122 cats were analyzed and classified into three types: transudate, modified transudate, and exudate. Causes of pleural e…

Evaluation of a human urine barbiturate test to screen for pentobarbital euthanasia of dogs and cats.

Pentobarbital is used commonly to euthanize animals. Occasionally during a death investigation, it is necessary to determine whether a cat or dog was euthanized via pentobarbital overdose. Screening for the detection of barbiturates including pentobarbital can be performed using commercial immunochromatographic tests. We used a commercial immunochromatographic test for barbiturates in humans to screen for barbiturates in urine collected postmortem from 20 dogs and 20 cats to determine whether they had been euthanized with pentobarbital. Additionally, we analyzed the urine for pentobarbital usi…

Cytogenetic and molecular insight into the genetic background of disorders of sex development in seventeen cats.

The genetic background of feline disorders of sex development (DSDs) is poorly understood. We performed comprehensive cytogenetic, molecular, and histological studies of 17 cats with abnormal external genitalia, unusual behavior, or tricolor coats (atypical in males). The DSD phenotype of three cats was associated with sex chromosome abnormalities: X/Y translocation (38,XXSRY+), 37,X/38,XY mosaicism, and XX/XY leukocyte chimerism. The remaining 14 affected cats were classified as XY DSD (SRY-positive). In this group and 38 normal males, we analyzed a priori selected candidate genes (SRY, TAC3,…

A Common Missense Variant Causing Factor XI Deficiency and Increased Bleeding Tendency in Maine Coon Cats.

Hereditary factor XI (FXI) deficiency is characterized as an autosomal mild to moderate coagulopathy in humans and domestic animals. Coagulation testing revealed FXI deficiency in a core family of Maine Coon cats (MCCs) in the United States. Factor XI-deficient MCCs were homozygous for a guanine to adenine transition resulting in a methionine substitution for the highly conserved valine-516 in the FXI catalytic domain. Immunoblots detected FXI of normal size and quantity in plasmas of MCCs homozygous for V516M. Some FXI-deficient MCCs experienced excessive post-operative/traumatic bleeding. Sc…

Molecular Survey of Bartonella Species in Stray Cats and Dogs, Humans, and Questing Ticks from Portugal.

Bartonella spp. comprises emergent and re-emergent fastidious Gram-negative bacteria with worldwide distribution. Cats are the main reservoir hosts for Bartonella henselae and dogs represent opportunistic hosts for the bacteria. Even though ticks may also play a role in transmission, their competence as vectors for Bartonella spp. has not been totally understood. Considering only a few studies had a focus on screening Bartonella in animals, humans and ectoparasites in Portugal, this study aimed to address the molecular occurrence of Bartonella sp. in 123 stray cats, 25 stray dogs, 30 humans fr…

Evaluation of gastrointestinal transit times and pH in healthy cats using a continuous pH monitoring system.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize gastrointestinal (GI) transit times and pH in healthy cats. METHODS: GI transit times and pH were measured in six healthy, colony-housed, purpose-bred spayed female cats using a continuous, non-invasive pH monitoring system in a sequential order design. For the first period ('pre-feeding'), food was withheld for 20 h, followed by oral administration of a pH capsule. Five hours post-capsule administration, cats were meal-fed by offering them their daily allowance of food for 1 h. For the second period ('post-feeding'), food was withheld for…

Endometrial Disease in Six Cats with Clinical and Histopathological Features Resembling Atypical Endometrial Hyperplasia in Humans.

In humans, atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) is considered as a precancerous lesion of endometrial adenocarcinoma (EA), from which it must be distinguished. Precancerous lesions have not been reported in cats with EA. We now document the histopathological features of endometrial lesions in six cats, which histopathologically resembled human AEH and had a good prognosis following ovariohysterectomy. Grossly, one cat presented with papillomatous nodules and three cats had pyometra. Histopathologically, proliferation of endometrial epithelial cells without atypia was observed in all cases. I…
