OBJECTIVE: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have become the standard means to measure surgical outcomes. Insurers and policy makers are also increasingly utilizing PROs to assess the value of care and measure different aspects of a patient's condition. For cervical myelopathy, it is currently unclear which outcome measure best reflects patient satisfaction. In this investigation, the authors evaluated patients treated for cervical myelopathy to determine which outcome questionnaires best correlate with patient satisfaction.
METHODS: The Quality Outcomes Database (QOD), a prospectively collect

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis affects nearly 200 million individuals worldwide. Given this notable disease burden, there have been increased efforts to investigate complications in patients with osteoporosis undergoing cervical fusion (CF). However, there are limited data regarding long-term outcomes in osteoporotic patients in the setting of ≥4-level cervical fusion.
METHODS: The New York State Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System database was used to identify patients who underwent posterior or combined anterior-posterior ≥4-level CF for cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy from

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia is the most commonly reported complication of annterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery. However, the incidence of dysphagia post-ACDF varies widely-partly attributable to differing outcome measures used to capture dysphagia. Our objective was to conduct a scoping review of the literature to quantify which dysphagia outcome measures have been employed post-ACDF and examine trends by study design, year, and location.
METHODS: After removing duplicates, 2396 abstracts were screened for inclusion. A total of 480 studies were eligible for full-text review. After

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective comparative cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of elective non-obese anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) patients with those that underwent bariatric surgery (BS).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Morbid obesity (MO) has been associated with an increased risk of complications following procedures such as elective ACDF. While pre-emptive BS has been considered for those with MO (body mass index [BMI] ≥35 kg/m 2 ), the impact of this intervention on BMI and its resultant correlation with surgical outcomes remains limited.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lateral mass screw fixation is the standard for posterior subaxial cervical fixation. Several freehand surgical techniques for placing lateral mass screws have been described which rely on anatomical landmarks and surgeon mastery of the technique to safely place screws. The accuracy of these freehand techniques is inherently variable and can be influenced by a surgeon's level of clinical experience. A novel technique was developed that utilizes the plane of the facet joint to create lateral mass screw pilot holes parallel with the joint line to improve the safety and accura

BACKGROUND: Although published data support the utilization of circumferential fusion to treat select cervical spine pathologies, it is unclear whether the posterior-anterior-posterior (PAP) fusion has increased risks compared with the anterior-posterior fusion.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the differences in perioperative complications between the 2 circumferential cervical fusion approaches.
METHODS: One hundred fifty-three consecutive adult patients who underwent single-staged circumferential cervical fusion for degenerative pathologies from 2010 to 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients

OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether the insurance type reflects a patient's quality of care after an anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedure by comparing differences in the postoperative complications, readmission rates, reoperation rates, lengths of hospital stay, and cost of treatment between patients with Medicare versus private insurance.
METHODS: Propensity score matching was used to match patient cohorts insured by Medicare and private insurance in the MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Database (2007-2016). Age, sex, year of operation, geographic region, comorbidities, and

OBJECTIVE: Cervical sagittal alignment changes (CSACs) influence outcomes and health-related quality-of-life. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), laminectomy with fusion (LCF), and laminoplasty (LP) are common treatments for multisegmental cervical spondylotic myelopathy; however, these approaches need to be compared.
METHODS: Our study included 167 patients who underwent ACDF, LCF, or LP. Patients were divided into four groups according to C2-C7 Cobb angle (CL): kyphosis (CL < 0°), straight (0° ≤ CL < 10°), lordosis (10° ≤ CL < 20°), and extreme lordosis (20° ≤ CL) groups. CSACs

BACKGROUND: Short-term neck pain after posterior cervical foraminotomy (posterior surgery) compared with anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (anterior surgery) treating cervical radiculopathy has only been assessed once, retrospectively, to our knowledge. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the course of neck pain for 6 weeks after both treatments.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of the multicenter Foraminotomy ACDF Cost-Effectiveness Trial (FACET), conducted from January 2016 to May 2020. Of 389 patients who had single-level, 1-sided cervical radiculopathy and were

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Prior study has shown that 70% of cervical pseudarthrosis after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) detected at 1 year will go on to fusion by 2 year. Pseudarthrosis detected 2 years after ACDF may have different bone healing potential compared to nonunion detected 1 year after surgery. Therefore, it might have a different clinical significance.
PURPOSE: To examine the radiographic and clinical prognosis of pseudarthrosis detected 2 years after ACDF with a minimum follow-up of 5 years.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospective cohort study.
