Infection and inflammation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The present study investigated the relationship between exposure to infectious agents and inflammation markers in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BP), and controls without a psychiatric disorder. We measured plasma levels of antibodies and innate immune markers and correlated them with clinical symptoms and cognitive function. In both SZ and BP, we found an increase in soluble CD14, and in BP an increase in C-reactive protein, IgM class antibodies against cytomegalovirus (CMV), and IgG class antibodies against herpes simplex virus 2. Furthermore in BP, we observed a nega

Lewy Body Dementia: The Under-Recognized but Common FOE.

After Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia (LBD) is the most prevalent progressive dementia of the many cognitive disorders wreaking unspeakable havoc on millions of lives. LBD is characterized by the presence of Lewy bodies, which are abnormal aggregates of a protein called alpha-synuclein, and are found in regions of the brain that regulate behavior, memory, movement, and personality. Many of the symptoms of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and LBD overlap, but LBD is more difficult to diagnose. Underdiagnosis is just part of the reason why LBD is unknown to the public and many health-care provi

Diathesis stress model for panic-related distress: a test in a Russian epidemiological sample.

To investigate a cognitive diathesis-stress model, the present study evaluated the main and interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity (AS) and exposure to aversive conditions (past month) in predicting theoretically relevant panic vulnerability variables in an epidemiologically defined sample from Russia (N = 390). Consistent with expectation, findings suggested that the combination of high levels of exposure to aversive conditions and high AS physical concerns predicted panic attacks (past week) and agoraphobic avoidance above and beyond the variance accounted for by negative affect. These f

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy of conversion aphonia].

Although a common disease, conversion disorder still calls attention in the clinical practice. A case of conversion disorder, diagnosed as a psychogenic aphonia that persisted for a week, was reported in this paper. A 21-year-old woman developed symptoms after breaking off a long-lasting relationship with her boy-friend. History revealed that she was introvert with high neuroticism and communication problems. Cognitive-behavioral therapy was used. After the positive reinforcement in the therapy of her aphonia, assertion training for the development of communication skills was performed. In the

Episodic memory deficits are associated with social cognitive impairments in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with cognitive impairments affecting attention, processing speed, executive functions, and episodic memory. Social cognition (SC), encompassing emotional processing and theory of mind (ToM), is also impaired in MS. However, its relationship with common cognitive functioning is not well defined. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between social and non-social cognitive impairments, focusing on episodic memory, executive functions, and information processing speed in people with MS. METHODS: We assessed 5

Functional Imaging in Improving Children's Mental Health Based on Behavior.

At present, children's psychological and behavioral health care is mainly based on the doctor's observation and diagnosis. On the whole, it is inefficient, and the effect of health care cannot meet the current needs of children's behavior. Therefore, this paper uses the method of functional imaging to study the key factors of children's behavioral health care. In this paper, the structure and function of children's brain are associated with children's psychological behavior. The brain structure of 64 children in our city is detected by functional image processing, and 64 children are divided i

Insomnia disorder.

Insomnia disorder (ID) causes both night-time and daytime symptoms. Night-time symptoms include subjective difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep and early morning awakenings, whereas fatigue, perceived impairments in cognitive functioning, and mood disturbances are common daytime symptoms. The prevalence of ID in adults is high (10-16%) and the condition represents a substantial burden for both patients and society. ID is also an independent risk factor for other mental disorders and physical diseases. Diagnosis relies on self-report, as a biomarker for the disorder has not yet been es

Sleep Biomarkers Help Predict the Development of Alzheimer Disease.

Middle-aged or older adults who self-report sleep-wake disorders are at an increased risk for incident dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer disease. Dementia in people with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease who complain of sleep-wake disorders progress faster than those without sleep-wake disorders. Removal of amyloid-beta and tau tangles occurs preferentially in non-rapid eye movement 3 sleep and fragmented or insufficient sleep may lead to accumulation of these neurotoxins even in preclinical stages. Selective atrophy in the medial temporal lobe on brain MRI has b

Impairment of visually guided associative learning in children with Tourette syndrome.

The major symptoms of Tourette syndrome are motor and vocal tics, but Tourette syndrome is occasionally associated with cognitive alterations as well. Although Tourette syndrome does not affect the majority of cognitive functions, some of them improve. There is scarce evidence on the impairment of learning functions in patients with Tourette syndrome. The core symptoms of Tourette syndrome are related to dysfunction of the basal ganglia and the frontostriatal loops. Acquired equivalence learning is a kind of associative learning that is related to the basal ganglia and the hippocampi. The modi

[Contribution of pubertal psychobiological processes to the formation and clinical manifestations of juvenile depressions].

Based on the study of 486 patients, aged from 16 to 25 years, key features of psychopathology of juvenile depressions were specified. They included bluntness and atypism of a depressive triad with insignificant expression and rudimentariness of the thymic component per se, a large proportion of cognitive disorders and psychopathy-like disturbances, a higher frequency of special overvalued syndromes of metaphysical and dysmorphophobic character. Types of juvenile depressions were singled out as follows: depressions with the clinical picture of juvenile asthenic failure, dysmorphophobic, metaphy

Depression and anxiety symptoms are related to pain and frailty but not cognition or delirium in older surgical patients.

OBJECTIVE: In community dwelling older adults, depression and anxiety symptoms can be associated with early cognitive decline. Symptoms of depression and anxiety are common in older adults prior to surgery. However, their significance is unknown. Our objective was to determine whether preoperative depression and anxiety symptoms are associated with postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) and in-hospital delirium, in older surgical patients. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in a cohort study of patients 65 and older undergoing elective nonca

Parents know best: Caregiver perspectives on eating disorder recovery.

OBJECTIVE: This study used mixed methods to evaluate caregiver perspectives on recovery from an eating disorder. METHOD: Caregivers (N = 387) completed an online survey about their child's weight history, treatment history, illness trajectory, and recovery. RESULTS: Children were predominantly females with adolescent onset anorexia nervosa and currently 18.4 years old on average. Qualitative analysis of caregivers' open-ended definitions of recovery revealed seven distinct recovery domains, including (a) weight (45%); (b) body image, eating disorder cognitions, and related emotions (54%); (c

Sleep problems in university students - an intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Up to 60% of all college students suffer from a poor sleep quality, and 7.7% meet all criteria of an insomnia disorder. Sleep problems have a great impact on the students' daily life, for example, the grade point average. Due to irregular daytime routines, chronotype changes, side jobs and exam periods, they need specialized treatments for improving sleep. "Studieren wie im Schlaf" (SWIS; (studying in your sleep)) is a multicomponent sleep training that combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and Hypnotherapy for Insomnia to improve students' sleep, insomnia symptoms a

What can we do to enhance cognitive care in Parkinson's disease?

For people living with Parkinson's disease (PD), cognitive impairment is a salient concern. The cumulative risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia increases as the disease progresses, which contributes to loss of functional independence and increased institutionalization at late stages of PD. Yet, due to scarcity of time and resources, cognition is often an overlooked topic in busy neurology clinics. There are few opportunities for cognitive evaluation during clinical consults, and where it does occur, assessment methods are varied and unstandardized. Diagnostic and post-diagnostic care
