Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), used respondent-driven sampling (RDS) in a study of HIV seroprevalence among drug users in New York City in 2004. We report here on operational issues with RDS including recruitment, coupon distribution, storefront operations, police and community relations, and the overall lessons we learned. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In functional dyspepsia (FD) decreased perception levels can be shown on gastric distension. Substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are involved in the sensitization of afferent neuronal pathways due to chronic inflammation. The role of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric mucosal inflammation in the pathogenesis of FD is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess whether FD patients have altered mucosal concentrations of CGRP and SP, and to investigate whether this is associated with visceral hypersensitivity or H. pylori infection.

From 1987 to 1989, an epidemic of congenital syphilis was observed in New York City. A case-control study was done to assess the association between various maternal risk factors and congenital syphilis. Independent of the effect of other factors, the odds of being exposed to cocaine were 3.9 times greater among cases than controls (95% confidence interval, 2.8-5.3). This study suggests that the epidemic of congenital syphilis may be related to the increase in cocaine/crack use among delivering mothers.

In our ongoing cohort study of homosexual men, the ratio of new Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) cases to new opportunistic infections (OI) during the periods 1982-1985, 1986-1987, and 1988-1989 fell from 0.75 (9 KS: 12 OI) to 0.57 (12 KS:21 OI) to 0.27 (4 KS:15 OI), respectively. An excessive focus on social reward and engaging in negative behaviors on social media may decrease certain executive functions.
