Anaerobes in nosocomial and community acquired pleural infections.

Anaerobes are important causes of pleural space infections. The aim of the study is to evaluate the role of the anaerobic bacteria in pleural infections. The study involved 278 consecutive clinical samples sent to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of Tertiary Chest Hospital. Anaerobes were isolated in 39 community acquired and five nosocomial cases out of 278 anaerobic cultivations (15.8%). Total of 56 anaerobe strains were identified and 21 aerobes were accompanied to anaerobic isolates. Aerobe isolates were associated with anaerobic microorganisms in 19 cases (43.2%). Bacteroides species

Suprapubic compared with transurethral bladder catheterization for gynecologic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Suprapubic catheterization is commonly used for postoperative bladder drainage after gynecologic procedures. However, recent studies have suggested an increased rate of complications compared with urethral catheterization. We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing suprapubic catheterization and urethral catheterization in gynecologic populations. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and trial registries were searched from 1966 to March 2012 for eligible randomized controlled trials comparing postoperative suprapubi

A 12-year review of Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections in haemodialysis patients: more work to be done.

Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections (BSI) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in haemodialysis patients. This study describes a 12-year retrospective review of S. aureus BSI in a large haemodialysis centre in a tertiary referral hospital. The overall rate of S. aureus BSI was 17.9 per 100 patient-years (range 9.7-36.8). The rate of meticillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) BSI was 5.6 per 100 patient-years (range 0.9-13.8). Infective complications occurred in 11% of episodes, the most common being infective endocarditis (7.6%). Ten percent of patients died within 30 days of

Changing epidemiology of nosocomial bloodstream infections in 11 teaching hospitals in Taiwan between 1993 and 2006.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Healthcare-associated infections, formerly known as nosocomial infections, are one of the most important issues in current practice. Understanding trends in overall infection rates, as well as their incidence and proportion among different causative organisms, can help us to better define our infection control methods and therapy goals. To understand the changing epidemiology of nosocomial bloodstream infections (BSI) in Taiwan, we retrospectively collected nosocomial infection data from 11 hospitals and examined the trends and changing patterns of nosocomial BSI. METHODS:

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia: epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management strategies.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of bacteremia, and S. aureus bacteremia is associated with higher morbidity and mortality, compared with bacteremia caused by other pathogens. The burden of S. aureus bacteremia, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus bacteremia, in terms of cost and resource use is high. The risk of infective endocarditis and of seeding to other metastatic foci increases the risk of mortality and raises the stakes for early, appropriate treatment. The incidence of S. aureus bacteremia and its complications has increased sharply in recent years because of the increa

Types of urethral catheters for management of short-term voiding problems in hospitalised adults.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common hospital acquired infection. The major associated cause is indwelling urinary catheters. Currently there are many types of catheters available. A variety of specialised urethral catheters have been designed to reduce the risk of infection. These include antiseptic impregnated catheters and antibiotic impregnated catheters. Other issues that should be considered when choosing a catheter are ease of use, comfort and cost. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review was to determine the effect of type of indwelling urethral cathet

Point-of-care ultrasound: Infection control in the intensive care unit.

Ultrasound provides a diagnostic modality that allows a whole-body approach at the bedside of a critically ill patient in the search for infectious foci. Both common sites of infection, such as the lung and pleura, central veins, and maxillary sinuses, and also less common sites, such as gastrointestinal perforation, sepsis due to mesenteric ischemia, or even meningitis, provide characteristic ultrasound patterns. Optimal use of ultrasound also combines bedside diagnosis with subsequent interventional procedures that can decrease the need for transfer to other imaging and interventional suites

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: occurrence of a new spa type in two acute care hospitals in Austria.

Typing multiply-resistant bacteria using molecular techniques is high priority for national health authorities. Routine typing of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was initiated in Austria 2005 and was performed by sequence analysis of the variable X region of protein A gene (spa), characterisation of the mec gene (SCCmec) and testing for Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), enterotoxins, toxic shock syndrome toxin and the epidermolytic toxin genes. Ten different spa types, including newly identified t2023, were found among 66 clinical MRSA isolates originating from two neighbour

Nosocomial and community-acquired meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in hospitalized patients (Spain, 1993-2003).

A series of annual surveys on the prevalence of infections in hospitalized patients in Spain was undertaken from 1993 to 2003 to describe clinical and demographic characteristics, trends and geographical variations in the proportion of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A total of 8312 S. aureus infections in patients from 296 acute care hospitals pertaining to 17 regions in Spain were observed during the study period. Overall, 23.8% of these organisms were reported as meticillin resistant. The proportion of MRSA varied widely across regions and during the study period. Patient
