Mouth breathing, dry air, and low water permeation promote inflammation, and activate neural pathways, by osmotic stresses acting on airway lining mucus.

Respiratory disease and breathing abnormalities worsen with dehydration of the upper airways. We find that humidification of inhaled air occurs by evaporation of water over mucus lining the upper airways in such a way as to deliver an osmotic force on mucus, displacing it towards the epithelium. This displacement thins the periciliary layer of water beneath mucus while thickening topical water that is partially condensed from humid air on exhalation. With the rapid mouth breathing of dry air, this condensation layer, not previously reported while common to transpiring hydrogels in nature, can …

Proteome alterations in erythrocytes with PIEZO1 gain-of-function mutations.

Gain-of-function mutations in PIEZO1 cause dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis (DHS) or hereditary xerocytosis, an autosomal dominant hemolytic anemia characterized by high reticulocyte count, a tendency to macrocytosis, and mild jaundice, as well as by other variably penetrant clinical features, such as perinatal edema, severe thromboembolic complications after splenectomy, and hepatic iron overload. PIEZO1 mutations in DHS lead to slowed inactivation kinetics of the ion channel and/or facilitation of channel opening in response to physiological stimuli. To characterize the alterations of re

Are serum delta neutrophil index and other inflammatory marker levels different in hyperemesis gravidarum?

AIM: Hyperemesis gravidarum (HEG) is a condition characterized by nausea and vomiting, fluid electrolyte and acid-base imbalance, dehydration, weight loss, and ketonuria in early pregnancy. The relationship of HEG with inflammation has been studied in many studies. This study aimed to investigate the role of serum delta neutrophil index (DNI), a new inflammatory marker, and other inflammatory markers in demonstrating the disease's presence and severity in HEG patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This retrospective study was conducted by accessing the electronic data of 79 pregnant women diagnosed w…

Toxic Streptococcal Infection in Children: Report on Two Cases with Uncharacteristic Course of Scarlet Fever.

INTRODUCTION: Scarlet fever is usually a mild childhood disease caused by type A streptococci. This disease is spread by droplets, mainly through direct contact with an infected person or the objects they have used. In pediatrics, these are significant risk factors for the transmission of infectious diseases. However, it is important to remember the possibility of serious complications in the course of scarlet fever. AIM: This paper provides a discussion of two pediatric cases in order to determine the possibilities of diagnosis, differentiation, and treatment of patients with severe, non-obv

A systematic review on the lipid composition of human hair.

Hair lipid composition varies by ethnic hair type and by hair layer. Lipids in the cuticle, cortex, and medulla of the hair shaft provide a protective barrier to environmental and chemical damage, prevent hair breakage and desorption, and affect the elastic and tensile properties of hair. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of the lipid composition and ethnic differences of human hair, effects of external damage on lipid content and properties, and changes in hair lipid composition associated with disease states. PubMed/MEDLINE was searched up to March 2021 according to

Diabetic Gastroenteropathy: Soothe the Symptoms or Unravel a Cure?

Autonomic neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus, and especially complications related to gastrointestinal neuropathy, are often overlooked in the clinic. Diabetic gastroenteropathy affects every segment of the gastrointestinal tract and generates symptoms that may include nausea, early satiety, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. Severe cases can be complicated by weight loss, dehydration, and electrolyte disturbances. The pathophysiology is complex, the diagnostics and treatment options are multidisciplinary, and there is generally a lack of evidence for the treatmen…

Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma with difficult antemortem diagnosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma (PMPM) is an extremely rare malignant tumor, and it is difficult to diagnose definitively before death. We present a case in which PMPM was diagnosed at autopsy. We consider this case to be highly suggestive and report it here. CASE SUMMARY: A 78-year-old male presented with transient loss of consciousness and falls. The transient loss of consciousness was considered to result from complications of diastolic dysfunction due to pericardial disease, fever with dehydration, and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Ultrasound cardiography (UCG) an…

Swallow Detection with Acoustics and Accelerometric-Based Wearable Technology: A Scoping Review.

Swallowing disorders, especially dysphagia, might lead to malnutrition and dehydration and could potentially lead to fatal aspiration. Benchmark swallowing assessments, such as videofluoroscopy or endoscopy, are expensive and invasive. Wearable technologies using acoustics and accelerometric sensors could offer opportunities for accessible and home-based long-term assessment. Identifying valid swallow events is the first step before enabling the technology for clinical applications. The objective of this review is to summarize the evidence of using acoustics-based and accelerometric-based wear…

Japanese grape (Hovenia dulcis) powder as an antioxidant agent in Bologna sausages.

BACKGROUND: The Japanese grape (Hovenia dulcis Thunberg) has potential as an antioxidant due to its high content of phenolic compounds in the early maturation stages. In this study, the antioxidant sodium erythorbate (CONTROL) was replaced by Japanese grape pseudofruits dehydrated by freeze-drying (FDP) and oven drying (OP), in Bologna sausages. The commercial natural antioxidant licresse (LS), based on licorice, has also been studied. RESULTS: No significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed for the proximate composition and the texture profile of the Bologna sausages. An increase in pH w

Anatomo-comparative study of formaldehyde, alcohol, and saturated salt solution as fixatives in Wistar rat brains.

Although formaldehyde is the most widely used and largely available fixative for preserving cadavers through decomposition prevention, it promotes darkening and weight gain, in addition to being considered carcinogenic. Ethyl alcohol has been proven a potential substitute to formaldehyde due to its effectiveness in tissue penetration, thus preventing proliferation of microorganisms; however, it can only be used alone for fixation of small parts. In view of such fixatives limitations, saturated salt solution has been widely employed based on its antimicrobial effect and ability to maintain tiss

Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in canaries (Serinus canaria Domestica): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae can cause high mortality in birds. In recent years, small farming of canaries has been developed in Iran and infectious diseases are the main obstacle in the progress of these occupations which increases the importance of identification of pathogenic bacterial agents. CASE DESCRIPTION: A flock with 250 one-year-old canaries presented a history of anorexia, lethargy, mild diarrhea, and approximately 30% mortality. Physical examination revealed that the birds were severely debilitated, cachectic, dehydrated with ruffled feathers, and wet discolored stool around

Case Report of an Elderly Woman Who Presented with Hypothermia and an Electrocardiographic Finding of a J Wave.

BACKGROUND This report is of a 92-year-old woman who presented with hypothermia and an electrocardiogram (ECG) finding of a J wave, or Osborn wave. On ECG, the J wave had an elevation of the J point at the junction of the QRS complex and ST segment, which usually appears at a body temperature below 32°C. CASE REPORT A 92-year-old woman presented to our hospital with an altered mental status. On evaluation, the vital signs were significant for low temperature (34.7°C), and she looked dehydrated. An ECG was performed as a part of the initial assessment and displayed normal sinus rhythm with an e

Role of basal sweating in maintaining skin hydration in the finger: A long-standing paradox in dry skin resolved.

A long-standing paradox in dermatology is why skin dehydration in the fingers can be triggered by repeated water exposure despite the action of water to hydrate skin tissue. Potential clues might be provided by identifying a mechanism through which water is held in the skin of the fingers. We speculated that this mechanism would be impaired after repeated water exposure. Here, we investigated whether there might be glabrous skin-specific water-holding machinery and whether this machinery might be impaired in dry skin/hand eczema. We examined this by using an impression-mould technique, allowin…

Physicochemical properties of brand and generic infusion fluid preparations (Part 3): Investigation of type 1 hypotonic infusion fluids.

In Japan, the increasing use of generic drugs has led to a reduction in drug prices, which affect the steady supply of drugs. A "basic drug" system was introduced to rescue these drugs by eliminating gaps in drug prices among preparations with the same constituents. "Type 1" hypotonic infusion fluids, which are potassium-free and commonly used to treat dehydration, meet the definition of a "basic drug" in Japan, and there are no drug price gaps. However, there is a lack of information on the physicochemical properties of "type 1" hypotonic infusion fluids, making it difficult to identify diffe…

Titan Cells and Yeast Forms of Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii Are Recognized by GXMR-CAR.

Cryptococcosis, a systemic mycosis that affects both the immunocompromised and immunocompetent, is caused by the inhalation of dehydrated yeasts or fungal spores of Cryptococcus gattii or Cryptococcus neoformans. The Cryptococcus spp. polysaccharide capsule is composed mainly of glucuronoxylomannan-GXM, its major virulence factor. The capsule thickness increases to more than 15 μm during titanization, favoring the pathogenesis of cryptococcosis. Previous studies demonstrated that cytotoxic T cells that had been bioengineered with GXM-targeting chimeric antigen receptor (GXMR-CAR) were able to

Media Matters, Examining Historical and Modern Streptococcus pneumoniae Growth Media and the Experiments They Affect.

While some bacteria can thrive for generations in minerals and salts, many require lavish nutrition and specific chemicals to survive to the point where they can be observed and researched. Although researchers once boiled and rendered animal flesh and bones to obtain a media that facilitated bacterial growth, we now have a plethora of formulations and manufacturers to provide dehydrated flavors of historical, modified, and modern media. The purpose of media has evolved from simple isolation to more measured study. However, in some instances, media formulated to aid the metabolic, nutritional,
