Molecular epizootiology of piroplasmids (Babesia spp., Theileria spp.) and Hepatozoon canis was studied in mammals from southern Europe (mainly from Spain, but also from Portugal and France). Partial amplification and sequencing of the 18s rRNA gene was used for molecular diagnosis. In some particular cases (B. ovis and B. bovis) the complete 18s rRNA gene was sequenced. Blood samples were taken from domestic animals showing clinical symptoms: 10 dogs, 10 horses, 10 cows, 9 sheep and 1 goat. In addition, DNA samples were isolated from blood of 12 healthy dogs and from spleen of 10 wild red fox

Previous studies (1982, 1987) have emphasized the superiority of sylvatic vector species over domestic species as xenodiagnostic agents in testing hosts with acute or chronic infections by T. cruzi "Y" stock. The present study, which is unique in that it contains data on both infectivity rates produced by the same stock in 11 different vector species and also the reaction of the same vector species to seven different parasite stocks, establishes the general validity of linking efficiency of xenodiagnosis to the biotope of its agent. In recent years, the increase in the number of cases of postural asphyxia has gradually attracted the attention and discussion of forensic scientists domestically and internationally, but a systematic, comprehensive and recognized expert consensus and identification standard has not been established at home and abroad. This paper reviews the case characteristics, occurrence, mechanism of death, and identification criteria of postural asphyxia, to provide reference for future research.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common domestic arbovirus in the United States. During 2018, WNV was transmitted through solid organ transplantation to 2 recipients who had neuroinvasive disease develop. Because of increased illness and death in transplant recipients, organ procurement organizations should consider screening during region-specific WNV transmission months.

Described a rare clinical observation of a patient aged 18 years with chronic left-sided otitis media against Proteus syndrome. By this age, the patient underwent a large number of operations regarding the removal of lymphangiomas, hemlimfangiomas, angiokeratitis of the body, as well as several sanitizing surgery on the left ear. A review of domestic and foreign literature showed that this case can be considered unique.

We investigated Toxoplasmosis gondii antibody seroprevalence in free-ranging caracals (Caracal caracal) in Cape Town, South Africa, from 2014 to 2017. Seropositivity was 83% (24/29), which is substantially higher than that detected in sympatric feral domestic cat (Felis catus) populations. The impact of this pathogen on local human and wildlife communities may be of concern.

While studying rickettsial infections in Peru, we detected Rickettsia asembonensis in fleas from domestic animals. We characterized 5 complete genomic regions (17kDa, gltA, ompA, ompB, and sca4) and conducted multilocus sequence typing and phylogenetic analyses. The molecular isolate from Peru is distinct from the original R. asembonensis strain from Kenya.

The laboratory certification and accreditation is the development trend of domestic and international laboratories. The National Institute for Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention passed through the site assessment in September 2012 successfully, 26 items in 8 fields declared were all adopted. This article summarizes some work experiences during carrying out the laboratory certification and accreditation.

We describe asymptomatic piroplasmosis caused by a Babesia microti-like parasite in wild raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) diagnosed by blood smear and DNA analysis. This is the first description of natural B. microti-like parasite infection in raccoon dogs and suggests that the wild raccoon dog can be a source for B. microti-like parasite infection of domestic dogs and humans.

A 3-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat was presented with weight loss, anorexia and icterus. Feline hepatic lipidosis and gallbladder mucocoele were diagnosed; this is the first report of gallbladder mucocoele in the cat. The case was managed successfully with cholecystojejunostomy, gastrostomy tube placement and tube feeding for 3 months. The cat has survived over the long term with minimal complications.

A 9-month-old, castrated male domestic shorthair cat with urinary incontinence was referred for surgical correction of an ectopic ureter. Excretory urography revealed hydronephrosis of the right kidney, right hydroureter, and ureterocele. A partial ureterocelectomy and neoureterocystostomy were performed. This report describes the surgical modification of the ureterocele and ectopic ureter to correct ipsilateral hydronephrosis, hydroureter, and urinary incontinence.

The Chinese medication Qizhi Weitong Powder has been proved very helpful in depressing gastric evacuation and small intestinal propel reducing gastric secretion, lowering acidity of gastric liquid and activity of pepsin as well as enhancing peristalsis of domestic rabbits. Other effects such as distinct protection to ligated ulcer of pylorus and painkilling have also been confirmed.

Oral vaccination of foxes associated with their control has been shown to be a rapid and safe method to extinguish enzootic foci of sylvatic rabies and to prevent the entry and spreading of this zoonosis in free zones of Italy. Domestic animals vaccination with live modified vaccines in zones with sylvatic rabies has proved to be highly effective in limiting the cases, recorded only in non-vaccinated animals.

We tested 243 domestic-animal serum samples and 316 human serum samples from the St. Cruz region on Santiago Island for antibodies against Coxiella burneti. 145 (59.6%) of the animal sera and 41.7% of the human sera tested positive. The samples were obtained after an epidemic among the human population with fever and symptoms typical of Q-fever.

Coenurosis, a parasitic affection rarely observed in man, is due to the presence in the tissues of larval forms of Taenias that live in certain domestic or wild carnivorous animals during their adult stage. The disease was confirmed in a young Senegalese patient after surgical excision of a cyst from the lateral side of the neck. Pathological and epidemiological data suggest that the affection is due to Taenia serialis serialis.

In a survey of 4287 necropsies on non-domesticated species of birds, cataracts were observed in 18 (0.4%). Sixteen different species belonging to 7 orders were affected. Most were old birds. The highest percentages occurred in Falconiformes (2.3) and Cuculiformes (2.25). In only two birds were cataracts thought to be congenital. Cataracts unassociated with senility were rare.

An 81-year-old male patient in Germany had prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Pasteurella dagmatis after a domestic cat bite. We surgically treated a paravalvular abscess and administered definitive antibiotic therapy consisting of penicillin G and levofloxacin. The patient was discharged from the intensive care unit in good condition 21 days after the surgery.

A 16-year-old domestic shorthaired cat with chronic kidney disease was presented with a subacute history of weakness and anorexia. Severe hypercalcaemia was identified and attributed to a cervical mass, diagnosed as a parathyroid carcinoma after surgery. Renal function, as evaluated by plasma creatinine, initially worsened during hypercalcaemia but fully returned to previously documented values two months post-operatively.

Non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea was diagnosed in an 11-year-old domestic shorthaired cat suffering from progressive cough and dyspnoea. The tumour was characterized by immunohistochemical expression of cytokeratins and focal expression of vimentin. The cat was exposed historically to high concentrations of environmental cigarette smoke and this may have been a contributory aetiological factor in the genesis of this tumour.
