[The disinhibitory influence of the activating system when artificially excited from different points in the brain].

EEG activation can be produced by electrical stimulation of some cortical points with the same threshold current strength as by the midbrain RF and thalamic CM stimulation. Near-threshold stimulation of all these points acting simultaneously with inhibitory conditioned signals does not disturb the effector inhibition but displays an EEG difference between negative signals: the fine differentiation sound evokes considerable EEG desynchronization, while the rough one does not change the background rhythms. The same stimulation combined with a positive signal which has been made ineffective by su

Chronic alcohol-induced brain states limit propagation of direct cortical stimulation.

The impact of chronic alcohol consumption is evident in disruptions within prefrontal circuitries, resulting in cognitive deficits that underlie lost control over drinking. Given the limited efficacy of current pharmacotherapy, we employed multifunctional bioelectronics to investigate the potential of direct electrical brain stimulation to rectify neural impairments in alcohol-dependent rats. Cortical stimulation counteracted the observed deficiencies in event-related brain potentials and neural oscillations following chronic alcohol consumption, particularly by strengthening low-beta oscillat

Treatment of spastic dysphonia without nerve section.

Spastic dysphonia is a disorder characterized by strained, constricted phonation with excessively adducted vocal cords. Despite initial success with recurrent laryngeal nerve section, the search for other treatment continues. Our clinical study involved inserting a needle electrode percutaneously into the region of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in five patients with spastic dysphonia. Electrical stimulation resulted in dramatic improvement in three patients and minimal improvement in two. Our experimental study was designed to create an animal model for an implantable nerve stimulator to be us

Pain in renal disease.

Pain is the presenting symptom in 20 to 30% of patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and occurs in 50 to 60% of patients at some stage of the disease process, but its frequency increases with age and size of the cysts. Back pain is caused by kidney enlargement as well as rupture, hemorrhage, or infection of cysts. Other causes of pain include nephrolithiasis and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Analgesic options for patients with ADPKD include transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), spinal cord stimulation, low-dose opioids, and local anesthetics.

[Participation of metabolic systems of carotid chemoreceptors in their effector regulation].

Electrical stimulation of the rat sinus nerve altered fluorescence of restored pyridin nucleotides and oxidative flavoproteids in the carotid body cells due to enhancement of cellular respiration. This was followed by an increase of cGMP content in the carotid body. The greatest shifts of these parameters occurred in square-wave stimulation with 20/sec frequency. The effector influences on the carotid body metabolism are most effectively blocked with pentamine and seem to be of cholinergic nature, the transmitter effect of acetylcholine being modulated with enkephalins. The cGMP system may ser

Association between gastric electromechanical activity and satiation in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to validate the use of impedance for measurement of antral contractions and to determine the relationship between food-induced changes in gastric motility and satiation. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In Experiment 1, three dogs were implanted with an antral strain gauge and bipolar electrodes for measurement of local tissue impedance. Impedance and strain gauge recordings were obtained simultaneously during antral contractions to correlate impedance changes with contractile events. In Experiment 2, seven dogs were implanted with two pairs of gastr

[Fibrillation of the heart ventricles].

During ventricular fibrillation, extra feedback may form in the myocardial structure due to specific features of such fibrillation, specifically, because of highly asynchronous contractions of some parts of the myocardium; these newly forming feedback is conducive to a persistent development of such arrhythmia. The frequency of the waves of mechanical contractions in various segments of the myocardium varies depending on the increase of hypoxia. The waves do not correlate with each other as regards their shape, neither do they correlate with the electrical activity waves. This indicates the co

Potassium secretion by vestibular dark cell epithelium demonstrated by vibrating probe.

Detection of motion and position by the vestibular labyrinth depends on the accumulation of potassium within a central compartment of the inner ear as a source of energy to drive the transduction process. Much circumstantial evidence points to the vestibular dark cell (VDC) epithelium as being responsible for concentrating K+ within the lumen. We have used the vibrating probe technique to directly observe voltage and ion gradients produced by this tissue to put this assumption on a solid experimental footing. Relative current density (Isc,probe) over the apical membrane of VDC epithelium was m

Barbiturates and transmitter release at the frog neuromuscular junction.

The effects of the convulsant and anticonvulsant barbiturates, 5(2-cyclohexylidine ethyl)-5-ethyl barbituric acid (CHEB) an phenobarbital (PHB) were studied at the frog neuromuscular junction. Spontaneous transmitter liberation was augmented by both drugs irrespective of the external Ca2+ concentration, but CHEB was considerably more active than PHB. Miniature end plate potential amplitude was equally reduced by both drugs. The net effect of these agents on end plate potential (e.p.p.) amplitude varied depending on the external Ca2+ concentration. In Ca2+-deficient Ringer's solution both drugs

Targeted Vagus Nerve Stimulation does not Disrupt Cardiac Function in the Diabetic Rat.

In this study, we acutely identified a target branch of the vagus nerve known as the pancreatic branch of the vagus nerve, which exclusively innervates the pancreas by applying electrical stimulus to the known cervical vagus nerve and observing compound neural action potentials at the target nerve. In a set of chronically implanted rats, the target nerve was again cuffed using an electrode and also implanted with a continuous glucose monitor. A model of type 1 diabetes (T1D) was chemically induced and hyperglycemic state confirmed. After induction, stimulation was applied to the pancreatic bra

New horizons in neuromodulation.

Electrical stimulation of the nervous system is a method used for several centuries which just in the past decades received wide recognition as an effective and safe modality in the management of neuropathic pain and other maladies. Explosion of new technologies and discovery of new neuromodulation targets are two parallel and interconnected processes. Using a paraphrase from the famous novel of Samuel Sham, The House of God, one can say that there is no nervous tissue in the human body that cannot be reached with a stimulating lead directed by a good strong arm. Neuromodulation devices are be

Carotid body chemoreceptor reflexes and their interactions in the seal.

In the anesthetized spontaneously breathing harbor seal Phoca vitulina stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors by intracarotid injections of sodium cyanide or by hypoxic hypercapnic blood causes an increase in tidal volume, respiratory frequency, and respiratory minute volume. The heart rate invariably decreased. Experimental dives caused apnea and bradycardia. When the carotid bodies are stimulated within 10 s of the commencement of a dive, the chemoreceptor-respiratory response is abolished, but the chemoreceptor-cardioinhibitory response is considerably enhanced. Electrical stimulati

Similarities and differences in circuit responses to applied Gly1-SIFamide and peptidergic (Gly1-SIFamide) neuron stimulation.

Microcircuit modulation by peptides is well established, but the cellular/synaptic mechanisms whereby identified neurons with identified peptide transmitters modulate microcircuits remain unknown for most systems. Here, we describe the distribution of GYRKPPFNGSIFamide (Gly1-SIFamide) immunoreactivity (Gly1-SIFamide-IR) in the stomatogastric nervous system (STNS) of the crab Cancer borealis and the Gly1-SIFamide actions on the two feeding-related circuits in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG). Gly1-SIFamide-IR localized to somata in the paired commissural ganglia (CoGs), two axons in the nerves

Deep brain stimulation of the inferior colliculus in the rodent suppresses tinnitus.

In animal models of tinnitus pathological neuronal activity has been demonstrated. Deep brain stimulation disrupts pathological neuronal activity and might therefore be a potential treatment for patients who suffer severely from tinnitus. In this study, the effect of DBS in the inferior colliculi is investigated in an animal model of tinnitus. The external cortex of the inferior colliculus was targeted because of the key position of the inferior colliculus within the auditory network and the relation of the external cortex with the limbic system. In this study we show the effect of DBS in the

Time-course of posterior parietal and occipital cortex contribution to sound localization.

It has been suggested that both the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and the extrastriate occipital cortex (OC) participate in the spatial processing of sounds. However, the precise time-course of their contribution remains unknown, which is of particular interest, considering that it could give new insights into the mechanisms underlying auditory space perception. To address this issue, we have used event-related transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to induce virtual lesions of either the right PPC or right OC at different delays in subjects performing a sound lateralization task. Our resul

Stimulating social interest: The translational value of basic investigations into frontal cortex function.

Fan et al. use electrical stimulation during a novel social interaction paradigm to demonstrate a role for the orbitofrontal cortex in directing social attention. Their results shed new light on the basic functions of the orbitofrontal cortex and have translational value in understanding circuit modulation for psychiatric disorders.
