Analysis of six heavy metals in Ortho mineral trioxide aggregate and ProRoot mineral trioxide aggregate by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry.

Ortho mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a mineral aggregate newly developed for perforation repair, root end filling and pulp capping. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) in Ortho MTA and ProRoot MTA. A total of 0.2 g of each MTA was digested using a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids and filtered. Six heavy metals in the resulting filtrates were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (n = 5). The results were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U-t

Monozygotic twins with idiopathic internal root resorption: A case report.

This study presents the first case of internal root resorption in monozygotic twins. Genetic factors have been implicated in the development of root resorption lesions. The link between interleukin (IL)-1 gene polymorphism and root resorption had been reported. However, these studies have involved external root resorption. Twin healthy 17 year old Caucasian sisters were diagnosed with internal root resorption in their upper left central incisor. Neither had a history of orofacial trauma and neither had received orthodontic treatment. The presence of IL-1beta+C3953 allele is the sign of predisp

Electronic working length determination in primary teeth by ProPex and Digital Signal Processing.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of electronic apex locators Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and ProPex, for root canal length determination in primary teeth. Fifteen primary molars (a total of 34 root canals) were divided into two groups: Group I - without physiological resorption (n = 16); and Group II - with physiological resorption (n = 18). The length of each canal was measured by introducing a file until its tip was visible and then it was retracted 1 mm. For electronic measurement, the devices were set to 1 mm short of the apical resorption. The data were analysed

SEM evaluation of the apical external root surface of teeth with chronic periapical lesion.

The aim is to verify, under scanning electron microscopy, the occurrence of apical root resorption in anterior and posterior teeth with chronic and radiographically visible periapical lesions. Thirty-two teeth were extracted, the apical thirds (n = 39) were removed, and prepared to analyse the external apical root surface. All specimens presented irregular areas of root resorption with different depths, located mainly around the apical foramen. Teeth with chronic periapical lesions present areas of external apical root resorption with irregular surface and different depths located mainly aroun

Detection of presence or absence of herpes simplex virus, Epstein Barr virus and human cytomegalovirus in infected pulp using a polymerase chain reaction.

The development of methods to amplify nucleic acids has provided a way of identifying and quantifying infectious pathogens in infected pulp and periapical region. Recent studies have detected human herpes virus in periapical pathosis and periodontitis. The aim of this study is to detect the presence or absence of herpes simplex virus, human cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr virus in an infected pulp. Ten pulp tissue samples from teeth with irreversible pulpitis and eight control samples were subjected to polymerase chain reaction(Perkin - Elmer Gene Amplification System) for detection of human

Histological evaluation of the effect of three medicaments; trichloracetic acid, formocresol and mineral trioxide aggregate on pulpotomised teeth of dogs.

The aim of this study was to use clinical, radiographic and histological examinations to compare the dental pulp response in 162 premolar roots of eight dogs when trichloracetic acid (TCA), formocresol, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and zinc oxide eugenol were used as pulpotomy agents. The teeth were divided into four groups. Following pulpotomy, the teeth were restored with amalgam. The animals were sacrificed at 48 h, 2, 4 and 8 weeks (two dogs at each interval). Histological evaluation indicated no cases with necrosis. After 8 weeks follow up, dentine bridge formation was evident in 20%,

Evaluation of the temperature of different refrigerant sprays used as a pulpal test.

The temperature of different refrigerant sprays (Endo-Ice, Endo-Frost, Coolermatic and Sprayon Contact and Tuner Cleaner) used as pulpal tests were evaluated in vitro. A thermocouple placed inside the pulp chamber of a maxillary central incisor was used to register the temperature changes when the refrigerant sprays were applied with a cotton swab, for 10 s. Results indicate that Endo-Ice and Endo-Frost presented the lowest temperatures among the refrigerant sprays tested. Temperatures measured inside the pulp chamber, however, were statistically similar in all groups.

Comparing the quality of anaesthesia in normal and inflamed teeth by pulp testing.

Failure to achieve complete anaesthesia of teeth with acutely inflamed pulps is a well-known clinical symptom. In this study, we compared the quality of anaesthesia in intact and inflamed mandibular teeth by using an electric pulp tester. Thirty patients with inflamed lower teeth, which had spontaneous or night pain, were selected; two healthy teeth in the same quadrant were used as control teeth. Electric pulp testing and thermal tests were made on each inflamed and control tooth. Teeth were then anaesthetised by inferior alveolar nerve block and electric pulp tests were repeated on inflamed

Proliferative activity in periapical lesions.

The identification of proliferative activity in periapical lesions may be useful in discovering the biological behaviour of different cell types. Proliferant cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), Ki67, CD3 and p53 have been used for the evaluation of the proliferative ability of many lesions. In this study, 16 periapical granulomas and 8 radicular cysts were analysed. A semi-quantitative method was used for evaluation of each lesion and antigen. According to the intensity of staining the following scores were assigned: 0 = no reactivity; 1 = reactivity above background; 2 = moderate reactivity; 3 = str

Central giant cell granuloma.

Central giant cell granuloma, a fibro-osseous lesion, is more commonly found in the mandible and mainly in children and young adults. The lesion, which has a greater incidence in females, may be uni or multilocular. On the basis of clinical, radiological and histologic features, central giant cell granulomas can be classified as "non-aggressive" or "aggressive". Management involves surgical removal and in most cases the dentition can be maintained. Three cases of central giant cell granuloma are reported and they illustrate clinical features of the lesion, how differential diagnosis can be ass

Vital pulp therapy in cariously exposed permanent teeth and its limitations.

Vital pulp therapy for cariously exposed permanent teeth remains one of the most controversial areas in dentistry. Because a vital, functioning pulp is capable of initiating several defence mechanisms to protect the body from bacterial invasion, it is beneficial to preserve the vitality and health of an exposed pulp rather than replace it with a root filling material following pulp exposure. There is no consensus on the survival rate of formerly cariously exposed pulps. Observation time, judgement criteria, pulpotomy/pulp capping technique and, most importantly, pulpal status at the time of tr

Distribution of the mylohyoid nerve: anatomical variability and clinical implications.

The mylohyoid nerve is a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve that provides motor supply to the mylohyoid and digastric muscles. Accessory innervation to the pulps of both anterior and posterior mandibular teeth by the sensory component of this nerve has been proposed to be one possible anatomical variation leading to failure of an inferior alveolar nerve block. The aim of this study was to trace the path of the mylohyoid nerve, from its origin in the infratemporal region to its terminal branches, in six human cadavers. Dissections of sagittally-sectioned heads were perfor

Neuropathic orofacial pain. Part 2-Diagnostic procedures, treatment guidelines and case reports.

Neuropathic orofacial pain can be difficult to diagnose because of the lack of clinical and radiographic abnormalities. Further difficulties arise if the patient exhibits significant distress and is a poor historian regarding previous diagnostic tests and treatments, such as somatosensory local anaesthetic blockade. Valuable information can be obtained by utilising the McGill Pain Questionnaire that allows the patient to choose words that describe the qualities of his/her pain in a number of important dimensions (sensory and effective). Basal pain intensity should be measured with the visual a

The problem of dentoalveolar ankylosis and subsequent replacement resorption in the growing patient.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is a serious complication following injuries of the periodontal membrane in severe dental trauma such as avulsion and intrusion. The condition is a fusion of the alveolar bone with the tooth. The consequences of this condition are progressive resorption of the root with replacement by bone (replacement resorption) and arrested growth of the alveolar process in the growing patient. This article will present an overview of dentoalveolar ankylosis and replacement resorption and its problems, treatment options and prognosis, especially focusing on the growing patient.
