Rehabilitation for distal radial fractures in adults.

BACKGROUND: Fracture of the distal radius is a common clinical problem, particularly in older white women with osteoporosis. OBJECTIVES: To examine the evidence for effectiveness of rehabilitation intervention(s) for adults with conservatively or surgically treated distal radial fractures. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Musculoskeletal Injuries Group specialised register (January 2002), the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (The Cochrane Library, Issue 4, 2001), the Cochrane Rehabilitation and Related Therapies Field database, MEDLINE (1966 to January 2002), EMBASE (1988 to 2001

Length changes of the cat soleus muscle under frequency-modulated distributed stimulation of efferents in isotony.

The length changes of the cat soleus muscle have been examined in isotony within closed cycles of the stimulation rate change. Successive stimuli were applied in a cycle to five filaments of the preliminary dissected L7-S1 ventral roots (method of distributed stimulation), maximal rate did not exceed 80-90/s (16-18/s per single filament). At the beginning of a slow linear increase in the rate a muscle began shortening rather quickly, the rate changes without muscle reaction consisted of 5.91 +/- 0.28/s (mean +/- S.E.M.). A substantially linear movement was observed during increase of the input

External Validation and Optimization of the SPRING Model for Prediction of Survival After Surgical Treatment of Bone Metastases of the Extremities.

BACKGROUND: Survival predictions before surgery for metastatic bone disease in the extremities (based on statistical models and data of previous patients) are important for choosing an implant that will function for the remainder of the patient's life. The 2008-SPRING model, presented in 2016, enables the clinician to predict expected survival before surgery for metastatic bone disease in the extremities. However, to maximize the model's accuracy, it is necessary to maintain and update the patient database to refit the prediction models achieving more accurate calibration. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES:

Documented Fracture-Healing Outcomes After Operative and Nonoperative Management of Closed Mid-Diaphyseal Humerus Fractures in Active-Duty Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Closed diaphyseal humerus fracture treatment is nuanced with regard to the selection of surgical candidates. Fracture union is crucial, with historical data suggesting rivaling union rates between operative and nonoperative treatment; however, recent literature suggests increased union rates with operative treatment. Although nonoperative treatment of most fracture patterns is supported by the literature, there remains an argument for operative treatment for select patient populations, especially when considering union rates. Evidence regarding fracture-healing outcomes in young

The influence of the method of initial stabilization of traumatic femoral shaft fractures on postoperative morbidity and mortality - a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The last 20 years have been dedicated to extensive research regarding the pathophysiology of trauma and the consequences of interventions that follow. Several theories have been proposed in terms of what causative factors are associated with poor outcome in polytrauma patients. Once the "two event model" was accepted, it became clear that patients although initially resuscitated, but in a vulnerable condition, have a high risk that a secondary aggression (for example, surgical interventions) would precipitate a state of hyperinflammation and early multiple organ dysfunction syndrom

Operative strategy in postero-medial fracture-dislocation of the proximal tibia.

OBJECTIVE: In 1981, Moore introduced a new classification for dislocation-type fractures caused by high-energy mechanisms. The most common medial Moore-type fractures are entire condyle fractures with the avulsion of the median eminence (tibial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) insertion). They are usually associated with a posterolateral depression of the tibial plateau and an injury of the lateral menisco-tibial capsule. This uniform injury of the knee is increasingly observed in the recent years after skiing injuries due to the high-speed carving technique. This uprising technique uses short

Arthroscopic Supraspinatus Tendon Reconstruction Using Hybrid LARS-Fascia Lata Graft for Irreparable Posterosuperior Massive Rotator Cuff Tears.

BACKGROUND: Conventional techniques for repairing an irreparable posterosuperior massive rotator cuff tear (MRCT) typically fail1,2. The supraspinatus tendon reconstruction (STR) technique offers a systematic approach to achieve both anatomic restoration and functional recovery of the supraspinatus tendon1. The use of autografts for reconstruction is challenged by their limited availability, inadequate dimensions, and donor site morbidity. The Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System (LARS; MovMedix) is a synthetic ligament consisting of fibers made of polyethylene terephthalate that is

Radiographic Union Assessment in Surgically Treated Distal Femur Fractures: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Distal femur fractures are known to have challenging nonunion rates. Despite various available treatment methods aimed to improve union, optimal interventions are yet to be determined. Importantly, there remains no standard agreement on what defines radiographic union. Although various proposed criteria of defining radiographic union exist in the literature, there is no clear consensus on which criteria provide the most precise measurement. The use of inconsistent measures of fracture healing between studies can be problematic and limits their generalizability. Therefore, this syst

Impact of telescopic intramedullary rodding on the growth of tibia: Comparative experimental study in dogs.

INTRODUCTION: The most commonly accepted method of long bone deformity correction in children with osteogenesis imperfecta is surgical realignment with transphyseal telescopic intramedullary rodding. This approach ensures reinforcement of the bone throughout the growth period. Although longitudinal growth does occur with these implants there has been very little work carried out to calculate the effect of such factors as rod position or implant material on growth. We carried out a prospective comparative study on 12 puppies using titanium alloy telescopic tibial rods with and without hydroxyl-

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Pediatric Medial Epicondylar Humeral Fractures in the Prone Position.

BACKGROUND: Fracture of the medial epicondyle is a common pediatric injury, with an estimated annual incidence of 40 to 60 per 100,000 people per year1-3. Medial epicondylar fractures are associated with elbow dislocation in about 60% of cases, and ulnar nerve dysfunction is reported to occur nearly 10% of the time2,4. No standard of care for medial epicondylar fracture exists, as similar outcomes have been demonstrated in observational studies with both operative and nonoperative treatment5,6. Increasingly, however, these injuries are being treated with surgical intervention, which in most ca

[Treatment of Fractures of the Distal Third of Tibia Diaphysis by MIPO Technique].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY MIPO (Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis) technique is currently a commonly used method to treat fractures of the distal third of tibia diaphysis. At the same time, it is just like other methods accompanied by a relatively high complication rate. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of this technique at our department is effective and whether the complication rate does not differ considerably from values reported by literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS In the period 2014-2016, minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis was performed in a total of 42 pat
